They had learned the lesson that violence was the ruling law of the world, but they had once died for a higher calling. She doesn't know what internal convolutions bring about that violence in people, save for her own case.

It's not like what brings them to that point changes the result, does it? No more than she knows what drives the Pthumerians in their bizarre actions. She can sympathize with people's motives, but sometimes it really doesn't make much difference.

For some people, it's a legacy of pain. And it isn't her place to delve into that without knowing.
