Maul's never had an honorable cause to fight for, something that he believed in so strongly he'd be willing to die for it. Sure, he would have been willing to die as a Sith Lord, but there was little honor or anything noble about dying just for those principles.

To die to protect someone or something else that they believed in so strongly....yes, Maul would have liked to have something like that in his life.
