I don't care. I'm a cat. (Book Club)

This month, the book club meets Tuesdays September 13th and 27th. It is reading The Trials of Morrigan Crowe by Jessica Townsend, available via written or audio formats.

Murderbot mostly facilitates the conversation—asking questions about the idea of a person being cursed. Can a child truly be responsible for all the terrible instances in an area? What is it like living with a death sentence? How does Morrigan being plucked away from death and taken to a wholly different land strike everyone when they too have been plucked away from their homes, death sentence or no?

Given the memory shares, other books come up as well. Discussions without a common base not only derail the book club but raises some tempers. Eventually Murderbot stands up to someone exclaiming 'Eden!' and another 'Rin?' "How about you two go read those books and meet back afterward?" it asks deadpan.

All this pressure give me anxiety (Silent Disco)

This month, the silent disco happens Fridays September 2nd, 16th, and 30th. Headphones and music are available. Play your own music or listen to DJ's mix. (open)

Though Murderbot wears headphones much like anything else, the music is so soft as to be nearly silent. It listens more in its personal feed, where the sound quality isn't lose being routed to an external device and reprocessed with environmental sounds. It doesn't dance but walks around the disco and sometimes across the floor. When anyone appears in distress, it glowers at the 'guilty' party and offers what help someone might need.

Small drones, wispy smoky things, float amid the dim lighting, listening and watching everything and everyone. Recognition software (again for distress) helps Murderbot more inputs than it can otherwise handle. It bobs its head slightly to demonstrate it's chill, and rounds once more close to the DJ's set up.

We improvise, all right? (Fast & Furious viewings)

This month, two Fast & Furious films air Thursdays September 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd, and 29th. Come and go as you please. See one, see both, see them all. Watch missed movies at any time during the week in smaller viewing settings.

Sitting in the back, Murderbot watches the large viewing screen as cars are stolen, raced, and complete utterly unrealistic stunts. It's unlike any life it has lived, even when it stole modes of transportation, flew quickly, and were dramatically destroyed. It smiles at a quip, and when it's done, Murderbot lets everyone else file out first.

The question isn’t ‘what are we going to do’, the question is ‘what aren’t we going to do?' (Memshare books)

Murderbot is collecting as many of the memshare books as it can. Feel free to read and go into any memshare here, find your own book, etc.

On a special bookcase close to the entrance, special magical books sit. Engrossing reads. These are books Murderbot has found or been given. Within them lie any number of memories. Some of them Murderbot has gone to. Others it hasn't. They may be people's lives, but books are books. Historical themes are popular over and over again. Why wouldn't these?

"It is a harsh place full of warriors and witches. There are many clans of Nightkin, each one headed by a matriarch. You must be strong, tough, and smart to survive there to adulthood. The Dark Side permeates to such an extent that outsiders cannot live there for a long time without going mad, though natives to the planet are immune to such an effect." Still, Maul speaks of his home planet with no small amount of fondness in his voice. It was the only place he'd ever experienced true happiness in his childhood when he'd been young.

"Not so dissimilar from the Sith Academy, then. When you train to become Sith, you succeed or you die." Though he has heard of some Sith who simply packed up and went home after their overseer decided they didn't even deserve death by trial. Both of his parents were failed Sith acolytes. "Only Sith and prospective Sith are allowed on Korriban, though Jedi seem able to traverse the planet with little ill effect." Jedi aren't legally allowed there anymore, but they did occupy the planet for some time.

"I've never heard of these Nightkin, however."

“That is one thing that has assuredly not changed,” Maul says with a derisive snort. If he’d failed at any of the many trials and tribulations Darth Sidious had put him through as a child, he most certainly would have been killed and replaced with a much stronger apprentice that his master could mold.

“It is possible they do not exist in your time. They are an off-shoot of the Zabrak race, a sub-species that came out from the intermingling of male Zabrak settlers and female human witches that lived on the planet. That was long ago in my time but perhaps has yet to even happen in yours.”

"That too sounds smiliar with Korriban's history. Modern Sith purebloods like myself are actually the result of the Sith race intermingling with humans. There was a time when the Sith race was much less human-looking." Talwyn's seen artwork of them within Korriban ruins and in the data archives. 'Pureblood' is simply a shorthand term to specify when someone is referring to the Sith race and not simply a Force-user who follows the Sith teachings.

"I'm guessing that you're from Dathomir, then, and are of these Nightkin."

"So there is a Sith race as well as the title used for Dark Side wielders? I had no idea." Now that truly is a fascinating bit of history that has been lost to the sands of time in the galaxy. "Which one came first?" He's assuming the people rather than the culture but one never knows.

"Yes. I was born a Nightbrother. These--" He gestures to his black tattoos. "--Are not natural markings. Nightsisters mark their kits with them over a period of time after they are born. It tells of information like which clan you belong to, when you were born, and basic personality traits. Therefore no two Nightbrothers are marked in quite the same way."

There's a certain amount of pride as Maul talks about his culture. Sidious had tried to erase his past, make him solely his faithful weapon, but he could never erase the simple truth that was already etched into Maul's skin. He clung to that part of his past, knowing that there was a point in his life where he hadn't belonged to his master.

"The Sith race came first. They are the original inhabitants of Korriban, and the Sith culture we know today began when Dark Jedi exiles settled on the planet and mixed with the native population." After enslaving them, he means. It wasn't until much later that the Sith race were declared equals to humans within the Sith Empire. "I fear they're no longer around in your time. Those from our galaxy, from your time, haven't recognized my species." In his era, you'd have to be living under a rock to not recognize a Sith pureblood.

"I wondered about the markings, for none of the Zabrak that I've met had them." Which means that Savage must be a Nightbrother too. He can hear that note of pride, and it's something that he too understands. He might not be as dark-sided as his fellow Sith, but he takes pride in being of the Sith, in both biology and culture.

"Yes, I didn't either when you arrived, but I thought perhaps you were from a race I had simply never heard of before." It was a big galaxy and it wasn't like Maul had all twenty million species memorized. Some of them were exceedingly rare and only found on a single planet or moon, never leaving to mingle with the other species of the galaxy. "But extinction seems like it might be a possibility as well." Especially if they kept intermingling with humans and other species in the galaxy.

"Yes, Iridonian Zabraks only tattoo on the face and usually are not nearly so detailed with their markings. Mine run over my entire body." Maul rolls up one of his sleeves, revealing the long and intricate black markings that extended all the way from fingertips to shoulder.

A wave of melancholy passes through him at the thought. Many Sith Lords feared that this would happen, should they keep having children with other species. Not to mention the whole Rule of Two thing, seeing as few purebloods chose to forgo becoming Sith Lords. Either way, it doesn't sit right with Talwyn to know that his people won't be around in the future.

Yellow eyes travel over the tattoos. "Most impressive. I've never seen a Zabrak that wasn't covered in armor or robes, but I did get the impression that their markings ended above the neck."

Maul looks happy at the compliment given to his tattoos. "My master tried very hard to erase my past. All he wanted was a weapon without thoughts, emotions, or any desires. Remembering a time before that was undesirable, for it meant I might want to return to that life someday instead of serving his will. But it was impossible for him to do so entirely when my culture is etched into my very skin."

Sidious had still done very well in molding Maul into what he wanted him to be, but after he'd finally broken free of that brainwashed state all those years later, he immediately turned his back on his master's teachings. Sidious hadn't cared about what happened to Maul. Only his family did.

"Your master sounds like a real piece of work." He could give some of the Sith Lords of Talwyn's era a run for their money in terms of vileness. "If I ever run into him, I'd show him what a Darth of the old Sith Empire can do."

That gets a small, amused laugh out of Maul. "You'll have to get in line. I think every single person I've described him to has hated him on basic principle. A number of my friends have said they will kill him if he ever shows up here." Still, Maul felt there would be something immensely satisfying about watching the old man go up against a Sith from long ago without knowing anything about how different the Sith of old were, someone who has access to powers Sidious would have given every tooth in his head to possess.
