"Yes. This is Caladan." Paul looks a little proud of that, even though it is arguably the least of all possible accomplishments to be born on a planet. Nearly everyone is, through no virtue or fault of their own.
But it's his planet, even if it isn't anymore. These islands and the seas between them are the foundation of him. He'll never go back, but it will never leave him, either.
"An oceanic world. Smaller islands up here, in the north, and larger ones to the south, but most of the planet is covered in water. You wouldn't believe the storms."
"I feel similarly about Lothal," he says, tone wistful. "I grew up at first in Capital City on the coast. And then when I was trying to hide from Imperials, I spent a lot of time in the grassland, more inland."
"Grasslands are one of the few things we don't have in Trench," Paul muses, ever ready to be drawn into ecologically minded thinking, "Not true ones. It's too bad that-"
The sound of heavy footfalls drag his attention back to the present. Paul straightens up and readjusts his coat, looking to the place his father will emerge from.
"It's 'my lord' or 'sir', when you speak to him," Paul says, quietly, "If you make a mistake, he won't be angry, but it's polite. There's nothing else you need to worry about. I'll look out for you."
Ezra nods. He'll stick with 'sir' because he'd rather call no one his lord - shades too close to how people addressed the Emperor - but he has no desire to be flat out rude.
"Stay seated or get up and bow?" he whispers back, rapid fire.
"Up to you," Paul says, under his breath, before his father appears blinking in the firelight. Duke Leto is nearly as tall as Paul is in the time Ezra knows him, taller than Paul is supposed to be now, and he carries himself with an easy, confident bearing even in the face of surprise.
"Hello," Leto says to Ezra, mildly, adjusting the strap of the satchel over his shoulder, "I wasn't expecting a guest."

He glances around at the forest, and sticks to something more like small talk. "Is this where you grew up?"
