[It's not easy, to fully commit to a life in the present, but it's the kind of life he's choosing to live. It's what helped Ekko when he had nothing and was alone, picking up the wreckage of his life and trying to drag every other broken person he found along with him. The past will never not hurt, no matter how good some of the memories are, and the future is an unknowable mess waiting to ruin what he has in the now that he has to fight back constantly.
He can't forget everything, but he's going to keep choosing to live with what's in front of him. And he can see that things have changed. Maybe things can't be like they were--and would he want them to be? He doesn't think he's enough like that kid he once was to go back--but they can have a new normal. New ground for them.
