There's a mess there that he doesn't know how to untangle, but still: he wants to offer something, anything that Robby knows he'll like.
And even with all that (or because of a part of it), he can't hold the gaze as he hears the words 'your dad'; trying to hold on, to keep it there, but it and the rest of what's remarked makes Robby look away, squeezing the hand held unintentionally, an embarrassed twitch from an embarrassed reaction.
It's going to keep being A Lot for a while. His own muddled feelings, and then that part of him that worries that things might change, that he's some kind of comfortable replacement for a missing family; but then the way he likes the sound of it, of being fussed over.
