closed to Megumi;
[ It's an offhand ask, more idle than a real question as Allen sorts through a pack overly full of what's mostly dried foods (meat). Several days worth without having to stretch too much (for a normal person). He frowns lightly, tugging at one of the straps in a sullen manner and not shouldering it quite yet. Even with being on the road more often than not, it's not something he's used to having to accommodate for. Surely that could be annoying if they have to fight...
Still, he glances over to his compatriot with a thoughtful look just as there's a deep rumbling from next to them. A wall of hazy white scales shifts next to them, Grey Ghost twisting his long neck around to watch them with a silent, intelligent look as he rests. Allen's attention shifts, reaching out to pat the heated flank of the dragon in an almost comically tiny sort of patpat where his hand is dwarfed by the size of the creature. ]
I've told him he doesn't have to wait for us since we might be in there some time, but I'm not sure if he'll listen. [ Dragons are very free-willed, or so Allen believes and how he understands his bond with Ghost. It's just the sense that he prefers to be independent and aloof, and why he rarely ever bothers him and prefers just to visit with and feed him fish. It's something they'll have to find out later and he'll just have to hope that, regardless, Ghost will continue to be able to fend for himself while they're gone.
After all, the Temple to Riteor is behind them with Allen's left eye already glowing a dull red from proximity to its corruptive aura, and the portal to the Other World awaits inside. ]

That seems reasonable- you two share a bond. I don't know much about dragon behavior but many animals become protective and attached to those they can trust. Preserve the pack if you will. And considering how smart he is and how dangerous this place is he's just looking out for you. [What a good boy.]

He's a lot like Tim in that sense. ♥ [ Part of the reason for the extra affection maybe, since he also had to leave Timcanpy behind in Trench. It's the furthest and longest he's ever voluntarily been apart from his Omen. Grey Ghost just snorts, near-blistering hot breath whipping his coat and hair, and nudges the slender form faintly in a way that briefly picks him up off his feet like he weighs absolutely nothing.
Allen pulls back and picks up the pack though, glancing back at Megumi like one refreshed. ]
Ready?
1/2 this deleted and I had to do a rewrite rip
It's amazing how interconnected nature can be, even in a place like this.
2/2
Clasping his hands together into a familiar hand sign. An icy wind tunnels around him carrying a dark black essence. Looking closely it's almost as if the energy has a magnet pulse that's being sucked straight out of the air. Clinging to Megumi's torso being siphoned down towards his hands. Inky heaps of the aura splash into a puddle of umbra.
A ripple dances along the surface- rising up from this pool- a large bipedal figure emerges. Its features are blurred and static with the only recognizable quality being a long canine muzzle and its sheer stature.
At about eight feet tall, it could easily be mistaken for a werewolf standing guard. The entity takes its position directly behind the young man, creating an illusion of sorts- distorting the distinction between the shadow belonging to the young man, and the creature in its entirety.]
Ready as I'll ever be.
oh my god that's the worst
He blinks, lightly taken aback as he looks up at the shadowy wolf-man looming above them. ]
What does that one do? [ With that imposing physique.. ] Is he like a sentry?

Divine Dog Totality is usually reserved for intense combat;however [eyebrows raise as he gestures at the bleak scenery] given the climate of high corruption in the surrounding area, I'm anticipating a greater number of possible trails for tracking. His nose is much more keen then say Pepper or Kage. And he has an inate tendency to go for the heavier energies because he needs to feed more. Ultimately giving him the edge over the other two and making him the best choice for this mission.
Oh, [ stated much like an after thought ] And as a bonus, his physique is a natural deterrent. Most low level creatures tend to stay away.

Megumi has always been more well thought-out and strategic than Allen, it's a very large part of why Megumi and only Megumi is the person he wanted to go on this kind of mission with. Primarily because he's the only other person Allen's met with the same kind of combat exorcism experience as himself that's actually applicable to much of the nature of this world, but also because of his cautious and prepared nature. But even knowing that, the depth of his reasoning kind of blows him away. He blinks.
...But then he smiles. Slow and warm, eyes bright but gentle. Intelligent in his own, separate kind of way. ]
It's funny... [ Giving Grey Ghost a final parting pat, he turns and smiles to the other exorcist with a pack gripped not so tightly. ]
Even with how dark this place feels, all I can think about when you explain it like that is how I feel so relieved that you're the one I'm here with.
[ You're a good comrade, Megumi.
Allen makes an offhand motion with a gloved hand, waving them forward. Let's go, let's go. Into the temple, and then through the portal into the maw of the other world. ]

I agree...trust can be very hard to come by.
[The answer doesn't come intuitively and takes him a moment to muse over. Managing to say as much as he did is honestly a lot, and he takes Allen's gesture as an excuse to venture forth.
Heading towards the temple, the outside walls are lined with sheets of moss. It's evident that the building has not been taken care of in a while. A thin layer of paint has all but peeled away exposing the base structure to the elements. A few windows are smashed in and it's difficult to discern if the shatter was caused by something internally or externally. For the ones that manage to stay in one piece, a thick condensation has built up almost as if someone's been breathing on the glass panes making it near impossible to see through.
Time certainly had a way of making places return to a much more natural state. As the two approach, a wet grassy humid stench wafts from just inside the door.]

He becomes quieter when they enter though, paying attention to their surroundings and the warning pulse of his left eye. Ever since he first stepped foot in the city weeks ago, when it instantly activated with an almost painful degree of seeking thirst for the corruption in even the temple itself, every gut instinct he had screamed to be careful for what had to be an incredibly powerful corrupted soul. Beyond that of any beast's that he's encountered, and the reason for their quieter mission today. If the nature of Riteor isn't that so much of a vengeful and spiteful pthumerian but one who has become intensely corrupted or a Beast... that changes things, doesn't it? To Allen it does, at least. In a good way, a hopeful way.
Corruption and beasthood can be cleansed, after all. A dark personality cannot.
But it's also going to give him an absolutely horrendous migraine, with his eye in overdrive and him unable to control it or shut it off. It's fine, he's resigned himself to that, but it does make him consider for the first time if maybe there's something that he could wear that would calm it at least when he needs it. But it's a passing thought, one he doesn't actually entertain, and the red glow of his iris pulses lightly against the black sclera in time with the red light that's emanating from in front of them.
The door's ajar, almost like someone was expecting them and left it open. Allen gives Megumi a brief look that's as disgruntled as it is unsettled, before he takes handle and opens it further to the ruined nursery. Funny how there was never any explanation they could find for why it's a nursery at the back of the church, something that niggles at the back of Allen's mind still as something that has to be important but he doesn't know why. The portal in the wall greets them, bathing the broken crib and rotted toys in the dull red light.
For a chilling moment it sounds like there's the wail of an infant, but it's just the creak of the door as Allen opens it. It still makes him cast an itchy look at Megumi though, before he studies the portal again. No difference from when they had been here before, it just sits there like some glassy gargoyle waiting for the spell that will free it. The headache is getting worse.
He huffs lightly and looks back at the room behind them, annoyed with the situation and how it feels like there are unseen eyes watching them, before indicating the portal with a small tilt of his chin. ]
After you two.
