When Maul saw Sidious had Luz's staff, he knew this was going to be a hard bout. The one advantage was that Sidious had never learned much about magic beyond what Talzin had taught him the first time he came to Dathomir. As for Maul, he had learned far more about how magic worked during his time in Deerington and Trench. That might have been enough to give Maul the edge he would need.
