It's difficult to dismiss the feeling that they're being observed by unseen entities, even if he'd like to think that's just his paranoia working overtime. Of course, that healthy (and justified) sense of paranoia had played a critical role in keeping him and those he cared for alive in Deerington, so he isn't going to ignore it now. Taking the first turn available to them is a sound idea, and he does exactly that once they reach one. So far the coast is clear.

And if their current predicament is any indication, there's obviously still a need for them, but he hasn't accumulated the supplies necessary for maintaining one just yet.
