There's a couple times when they have to briefly hide from the creatures that lurk in the tunnels, but it's not long before they reach the opening. And it's the bottom of the sinkhole in front of the hospital, there's a whole mountain of corpses piled high in the tall space and looking up, there is a pinprick of light indicating the way out.
