Luz had wondered if it was something like that. There had been a lot going on in Darth Maul's life, and if there was one thing she saw, it was that his Master had made sure to keep him in pain and misery, long enough so that he could transfer all the pain and rage he felt at someone else. Sadly, Darth Maul had done just that, and at least here he had a chance to be more than just some monster defeated in another hero's story.

"I mean, your Master definitely orchestrated the choices you made, and when he did, you made them all aimed with the purpose of hurting Obi Wan. In a way, the choices you made were all in service with what he wanted to happen to you."

In other words, Luz acknowledged that Darth Maul's decisions were his own undoing, but they had long ago been skewed to be self-destructive in the first place.

"So if you know that stuff, why DO you choose to still lean on being a scary former assassin as your persona? Wouldn't you want people to see you differently?"
