It was hard for Maul to admit even now but he did really see Obi-Wan as being the ideal Jedi. It would take someone who loved selflessly but could still let go of that love to manage to put up with Maul and not hate him with the burning of a thousand suns, even after he'd killed two of the people in Obi-Wan's life he'd cared about the most.
