It would have been just as simple as the 'sit around and wait' attitude Obi-Wan had apparently adopted.
"You must be some sort of prodigy to be as good as you are. But I'm not surprised." Maul had long suspected Luke was the Chosen One of legend and knew Obi-Wan thought so as well, at least at the point in time where Maul had died in his arms on Tatooine. It made a lot more sense in his eyes than the idea that it was Anakin, given Luke's propensity for being able to do things like turn Dark Siders back towards the Light.
