Big deal. You lose people all the time. Everybody does. The wound bleeds, then you die. But something in the tone of Anna's voice stirs something deeper than the layers of cold cynicism. She sees the defeated way her shoulders slump. Forlorn, needing something that will never return to her. And... memories. Something forgotten. "Shit sucks."

KainĂ© pauses, chewing her lip as she gives another sidelong glance to Anna. "When I was a kid, I never thought anybody could accept me. Think of me as a person instead of—" She breaks off, pulling back from revealing too much. "Some unnatural thing." But the rawness of her voice says more than words could. "Eventually I found people who did. People who cared about me. But I lost every one of them."
