I guess. (Maybe it was just a matter of Kyle and Karkat being good for each other and that's all there was to it. Dirk stands there, stretching his hands and curling them into fists. He always wondered if he was someone who would be considered good for someone like that.
Bright purple and white energy begins to crackle around his hands. It's like a glow, snapping noises filling the air. How desperate would he seem if he pulled even half the shit Kyle did for Karkat? He holds his hands up towards Kyle.
There are two problems. The first was that Dirk was genuinely expecting to only extract part of Kyle's soul. He didn't think there would be anything more than that.
The second problem is that he was slipping into a state of dissociation. It wasn't purely because of their conversation but combined with his edging corruption and normal feelings of self-hatred...It's not a great combination. He wasn't in the right headspace to truly focus. Instead, his jealousy was sinking into his powers without him even realizing it. He does notice that the white cracks of energy become orange, but considering he has only ripped out one soul, he isn't sure if the color difference means anything.
Later, he would realize how fucking stupid that was given how important colors were from his world. Every color had a reason. Nothing was coincidental.
He leans forward and whips his arms out. The energy is a bit like lightning in appearance, but the noise was a bit more like that of a cracking whip. It snaps through the air and he can feel the moment he gets the hooks of the energy into Kyle's soul.
Except it's not his soul he winds up grabbing. It's part of Kyle's emotions, the special part of them that loved Karkat so much. His own jealousy literally weaponized. He can feel it through the connection of his power, and it makes his own jealousy so much worse He yanks, ripping it out of Kyle. It's only a matter of a minute, but no doubt was an agonizing minute.)
