Are we out of the woods yet?

MARCH 2022 EVENT
PLEASE READ CAREFULLY! All the following information pertains to how the entire event works.

- First two prompts feature forced relocations via Moss King's abilities.

- There will be "spill-over" from each prompt meaning certain elements from the prompts may be present in the ordinary Trench. The third prompt features how this is impacting the overall setting and could be a good option for those not interested in full relocation.

- Each level will be infinite in space and impossible to ever fully travel. It will however be very easy to run into other Sleepers since they will naturally be clustered in close areas. The Moss King wants Sleepers to be put together! More blood magic collected in one area = more magic for him to use!

- What does that mean? The longer you stay in one of the levels, the weaker your blood magic becomes and the more sapped of energy you become! You can customize this depending on your character's overall strength/power set.

- Characters with teleportation/reality-altering abilities will not be able to teleport in and out of these levels at will, but they can teleport around inside of these levels.

- All Omni/Omens can receive and send messages as per usual in the levels.

- If your Patron is the Moss King, you can either assume he will spare your character the trauma of the levels...Or send them more often than others.

- All levels and challenges can be experienced multiple times throughout March. All levels will be inaccessible on April 1st. Any characters who are not out of the level will automatically die.

- Characters can leave levels after completing at least three challenges. Some characters may be stuck in one location for the entire month. You do not have to necessarily play out all three challenges, but you should have a general idea of what your character did to get out.

- Only items on your character at the time of their forced teleportation will be brought with them into the levels. They will not be able to summon other items even if they have abilities to. If they have a bottomless bag, they will only be allowed what's inside the bag already.

- All challenges are really meant to be played with multiple characters.

- There is no way to research or get ready ahead of time for any of the prompts due to the Moss King regularly changing up rules and games every year. The only "records" of March caution Sleepers about the Moss King, comparing his chaotic nature to a "less violent version of Mariana" and with more chances of positive outcomes.

JUNGLE LEVEL
WHEN: March
WHERE: ????
CONTENT WARNINGS: Forced participation via mental coericon, jungle-themed dangers such as animals and natural risks, potential animal violence/themes of hunting, survival challenges, potential body horror/changes, draining blood via mosquitos,

You think you hear a drumming. It's brief and easy to dismiss at first...But then it steadily grows until you can feel it vibrating through your body. It increases your heart rate and instead of feeling anxious or put off...You feel an inexplicable excitement and drive to see what's making that curious noise. As you seek out the source, the drumming becomes louder and louder and louder...Until finally, you find it.

A board game called Jumanji. Those who might be familiar with the movie have all information about the movie completely blanked from their mind. This game is completely new to all, looking like a relic of Trench technology. It has somehow appeared in your home or in the shop you frequent/work at. It might even just appear in the middle of the forest or on The Farther Shores. And when you open up, even if you aren't usually one to play games, you have the undeniable urge to play it. What can it hurt? It's just a board game...

But of course, this is Trench. In order to play, you need to offer a drop of your blood. It happens the moment you pick up one of the player pieces. A little prick of the finger and the sacrifice is granted. Roll the dice and make your first move. The pieces automatically stick to the board and move according to the dice. The goal is simple: move the pieces to the center of the board. There are no other rules. The center of the board gives a smoky message every move you make, some sort of unique challenge.

The first challenge is simple though: Enter The Jungle Level. You don't have a moment to wonder what that even means because before you know it, you're being quite literally pulled into the game. You are sucked into the center of the game and transported to a dense, heavy jungle. You enter with the people you were playing with, or if you were playing solo, you're arriving with other players who found their own version of the game. So, you're in a jungle and you have this board game. What now?

Turns out you can't escape the Jungle whatsoever except by completing the game. All consequences of the game vanish upon completion. Losing the board means you have to get the board back. Don't worry, the pieces will stick to the board and you can make dice if you lose the dice. Ignoring the game isn't possible. You have an increasing urge to complete the game no matter the cost...And boy, is there a cost! Some of the challenges are simple and easy enough, but some are downright lethal. You just have to survive till the next roll which might mean getting to the board and getting in a roll. Sounds simple until you're drowning in quicksand and the board is sinking right next to you. At least the board will appear elsewhere if you lose it through a challenge...But do you really want to risk the time it might take for it to reappear?

The challenges vary completely and there is absolutely no way to determine any sort of trick. If you roll a five, your piece will move five spaces, and on the space it lands, the challenge will appear in the form of a riddle in the center of the game. Then the world around you will throw a very real challenge at you. Some people may experience the same challenge twice in a row while others might never see the same challenge twice. You can play with up to six players but you can play side by side with another group playing on their own board.

THE CHALLENGES

GIANT FROGS: These frogs are massive yet masters of blending into their surroundings. Unless you're highly skilled at detection, you won't even realize that these frogs are hunting you until it's too late. Suddenly their tongues lash out and it's so quick, you're in their mouth before you know what has happened. It's as disgusting as it sounds, but it isn't a particularly fast death. You're more likely to get drenched in their saliva and fight with a strong tongue. But the moment you are swallowed, the acid of their stomach will quickly kill you...and painfully. Thankfully, they are just ordinary flesh creatures. You might be able to cut your way out of them or get them to puke you up if you have something gross tasting on you. Someone could even get them to spit you out by kicking dust into their face.

QUICKSAND: No matter where you are standing when you roll this challenge, the ground beneath you turns soft and pliant. This is more like movie quicksand where the sink is almost instantaneous, sucking your feet down so tightly that you might break them if you try to wrench yourself out. Struggling will only make you sink faster and possibly crush bones in the process. Leaning forward or laying flat backward will help get you out, and if someone is nearby and able to toss you a rope, they could slowly drag you to safety. Losing the game in quicksand is a common occurrence and something to try and avoid. Worst case scenario? You drown in one of the worst ways possible.

RUSHING RIVERS: Much like the quicksand, it doesn't matter where you are. You hear and feel the rumbling of water and a tidal wave of water comes crashing through your immediate area. You're immediately swept away by the water, slammed through trees and against rocks. This flash flood can last up to an hour, but if you're quick, smart, and a strong enough person, you might be able to find safe haven on a large rock or tree. Maybe you get lucky enough to find something to float on in the process.

PERKING UP: This doesn't seem to do much of anything at first...The person who rolls this challenge will feel a little like sneezing. Their skin will tickle and they will have a very funny feeling in their gut. Slowly they will begin to develop animal features: ears, tails, fur on their hands, turning into a hybrid between a jungle animal and whatever they already are (a human, elf, etc). These features will give some helpful abilities, such as speed if you become part cheetah or possibly flight if you become part bird or flexibility if you become part monkey. Some transformations may be full. Transformations will only revert once the game has been beaten.

TROPHY HUNTER: Unfortunately for you, you have summoned a very smarmy asshole who is an exceptional hunter of exotic creatures. And that now includes Sleepers. The thrill of the kill exhilarates him and he seems to have weapons capable of killing any Sleeper regardless of their abilities. He might look like an ordinary person, but he seems to have been enchanted by the game and is an unkillable challenge. You can hide from him and trick him, and you can slow him down with injuries, but he will keep getting back up. He is human in the fact that he needs to sleep, rest, eat, and take his time tracking you down...So you better hope you're damn good at keeping yourself concealed. If he catches you, he won't hesitate to kill you.

MOSQUITO MANIA: In such a humid, dense jungle, it's no surprise the air is filled with bugs. However, after getting this challenge, you will notice an increase in mosquitos buzzing around. These mosquitos are drawn to Sleeper Blood and the more they drink...The bigger they get. It's hard to notice at first, easy to think you're killing small ones and bigger ones are coming back for more. Your blood pollution fills the air, and soon, mosquitos the size of baseballs are slamming into you. Maybe even bigger...And the bigger they are, the more deadly they become, the more blood they drain. It doesn't help that their bites leave itchy welts that grow in size to match the mosquitos. It's hard to fight off all the mosquitos and they seem to be drawn to all blood equally.

One way to get past them, however, is by covering yourself with mud. It seems to cut your smell off from the bugs and they will quickly lose interest. Thankfully there is plenty of mud in a jungle! You just have to think to use it...The mud will help soothe bites as well.
CATACOMBS LEVEL
WHEN: All of March
WHERE: Catacombs beneath Trench. People who escape will find themselves crawling out of a grave in the Sanguine Graveyard.
CONTENT WARNINGS: Catacombs, death, skeletons, optional corpse/undead styled monsters, burning people/animals themes (but not actual), extreme themes of claustraphobia, being buried alive/being trapped, forced panic/hysteria/confusion, time manipulation/displacement, feelings of starvation/thirst but not actual starvation/thirst, mold/mushrooms/fungi growing on skin, drowning, extreme disorientation, extreme feelings of inadequecy.

One might wonder where all the dead bodies of Trench go. Trenchies will typically say the Sanguine Graveyard or people are sent out to the ocean...But it wasn't always that way. If you dig a bit more on the subject, you may come across a reoccurring piece about Trench having extensive catacombs beneath the city. Yet no matter where you look or how deep you dig, those catacombs never really seem to appear. So what's the deal?

The deal is it takes the power of a Pthumerian to get you to the now deeply buried catacombs. These catacombs are a testament to this world's blood pollution and power. These do not seem to be just the catacombs of Trench...But the entire world. They are endless, complex, and dangerous. Unlike the Jungle Level, there is no board game to bring you to the Catacombs. It is the mere whim of the Moss King wondering if you might be capable of handling what lingers within. This is a matter of surviving the challenges, getting through them, and seeing the other side.

You have no say in the matter either way. One moment you're standing around, minding your own damn business, next moment you're being quite literally ripped into the earth through vines and rubble. You get a mouthful of soil as you're pulled through whatever bizarre blood magic vortex the Moss King has created, hearing screams all around you, feeling smoke fill your lungs, the scent of grass burning your nostrils. The entire world feels like it's caving in on top of you, and then you're plummeting through open air and hitting the ground.

Once you orient yourself, you will find yourself underground in an open stone shrine to the Moss King. A massive stone goat head is staring at you with two massive torches lit in place of its eyes. The ceiling above is covered with heavy vines and plant life, and there is no way to go back from where you just fell from. You are automatically joined by others and they might be people you were with or complete strangers. It could be just the two of you or a large group of people.

You come to the Catacombs with whatever is on your person, but fear not, the Moss King has thought ahead. Smooth stone cubbies line the walls, and in each cubby is a fully stocked backpack filled with things anyone would want for spelunking, cave-diving, and deep underground exploration. There are plenty of flashlights, head flashlights, ropes, harnesses, gloves, hiking shoes, some basic medical supplies, flasks of clean water, and a few mushrooms to fill up one's stomach. There are no maps, no compasses, but those things wouldn't do you much good anyway.

There is only one way to leave the stone room and that is through the giant goat's open mouth. It's a simple stone passage that leads to the Catacombs. You have no choice but to go through them. You cannot manipulate the space around you with abilities. There is a certain haze in the air that can dim abilities and make you rely more heavily on your intuition and intelligence. Thousands upon thousands of skulls and skeletons are compressed together. Some areas are well-lit with torches, but the deeper you go, the darker it becomes until you must rely on flashlights.

The Catacombs start off relatively normal, but in order to escape, you must delve in deep. The pathway changes for every party, and you may come across other characters completely lost in the Catacombs. Eventually, the skeletal remains become thoroughly buried beyond stone walls. There are tight, narrow passageways that are difficult to crawl through. Some places you need to actually crawl to get through, stone walls tight all around you. Other places you need to drop down into, relying on ropes and harnesses to get safely down. You may need to depend on rock climbing or crawling over bones or wading through cold, murky water.

But it isn't just the enclosed, dark spaces that are a challenge. There are vacant rooms with unique challenges and things lurking in the dark. You can hear unsettling sounds, such as the distant trill of a random phone that keeps on ringing, the sound of feet skittering away as you approach, the musky odor of fresh corpses, the uncomfortable feeling that you aren't alone no matter how quiet and still the air around you may seem. Can you survive the Catacombs? Will you see the world above once more?

Throughout the Catacomb one can find directions pointing you in a certain direction...Only these directions are quite unusual. It doesn't seem like one can rely on the usual Sleeper translation - you either have to know the languages or figure them out...But they aren't ordinary. You might find upside-down kanji directing you or come across braille engraved into the stone or backward French or Latin. Some Dothraki directions might point you in one direction while Na'vi points you in another. Riddles give you warning about possible challenges or solutions to the Catacombs throughout. Can you solve this giant, undead puzzle before you become part of it?

You may encounter a variety of the following challenges. Some only once, some multiple times. One can be trapped in the Catacombs for what feels like days/weeks, but once you get to the surface, it will have only been an hour or so in real-time. While it may feel like you are dying of thirst or starvation, it is not actually possible while in the Catacombs. The water in the packs will sustain you.

THE CHALLENGES

DARK WATER: There aren't too many sources of water in the Catacombs, but when you come across it, approach it with caution. There is a difference between regular water and the dark water of the Catacombs, and telling the difference isn't easy unless you're a darkblood and can detect the slight shimmer to dark water. Dark water will cause a severe disorientation of senses: it can deafen all sound, cause immediate vertigo, make you smell things that aren't there, make your mouth fill with an awful taste. Careful not to consume the dark water. If you wade through the water, the effects of it will last while you're in the water and about ten minutes after you have left it. Some have been known to accidentally drown in the dark water due to its disorientation even if dark water is rarely that deep.

CALLING FIRE: You hear the roar of fire and smell smoke long before you see it. You step into an open cavern and in the middle of it...is a burning house. An ordinary house. Up in flames. You see dark figures standing at all the windows, staring out at you with sightless gazes. They do not scream. They do not move. They merely watch you. Then the front door bursts open with the scream of a woman, and the screaming gets louder and louder. Those who feel the urge to help others will become overwhelmed by the desire to rush into the fire and "save" whatever lurks within, but those who are a bit more sensible about self-preservation will be able to resist this siren screech. They will likely realize there is nothing to be saved in this house.

Those who persist into the house will find, unsurprisingly, a burning house. Only this fire won't immediately kill you: instead, you'll go mad searching throughout the burning house looking for the source of the screams. You will smell the flesh burning, hear the cries of people or animals trapped, rushing from room to room trying to find them. It isn't the fire that kills you. It will be the smokey, strange figures watching you in every room. They slowly drain the life out of you, covering your skin in soot and destroying your lungs, your eyes, your nostrils, until nothing is left of you but an ashen heap. While this is a lethal trap, it is one that people can be saved from...Eventually.

UNTOUCHABLE TEMPTATIONS: You stumble into a room where there are heaps of treasures beyond rusted, cellar doors. All that glitters and more: gold, silver, rare gems, bloodstones, vials of rare potions and elixirs, stunning weapons, delicious smelling food, beautiful clothing, and possibly even relics from your own homeworld. Perhaps the rarest sword of your world is sitting right there. For many, this will be an obvious trap. One must simply bypass the temptations and enter through the next door and continue with your journey...But...Unfortunately, for many, this will prove a great feat. Paleblood glitters among the floor of this room and heavily sways people into being enormously tempted by the treasures, even if they normally might have better sense.

For those who yearn for treasures of any sort, they will find the pull nearly irresistible. Only someone who genuinely wants for materialistic will find it easy to pass by the area. They will likely be the ones to save others. Those who break open the cellar doors and attempt to get the goods, your touch will begin to turn all around you to gold...Including the spots on people you touch. This might permanently render someone's skin gold, and can quickly kill people. Eventually, the cursed person will turn into a golden statue of themselves. They will reincarnate as usual, but a golden statue of them will be forever left in the Catacombs, possibly discovered by other Sleepers passing through. This Midas touch can last well after you have left the Catacombs and you may need to get some extensive darkblood therapy worked on your body to reverse the curse.

CHRONOLOGY OF SEASONS: You enter a stone room with twelve sliding tiles painted to look like the various stages of the seasons in Trench. Season of Bone, Season of Tears, Seasons of Blood. They are mixed around the room and you need to put them in the right order. Each tile depicts the Patron Pthumerian associated with their specific month with their moon in the background. To those who have been diligently studying the Patron Pthumerians, this should be a relatively easy task even if figuring out how to move the tiles might be difficult. You can generally tell where the tiles should go seeing as the wall you entered is decorated with floral carvings, the wall to the right is decorated with leaves, then the wall ahead is decorated with snowflakes. The tiles form one large cohesive portrait that wraps around the room. The moment you enter the room, the wall closes permanently behind you. Each time you move a tile, human blood begins to trickle into the room, and if you mess up enough...Well. You get the picture. Or, in this case, you didn't get the picture. Oops.

TIL DEATH DO WE PART: Throughout your journeys in the Catacombs, you will keep seeing glimpses of familiar faces out of the corner of your eye. Parents, friends, loved ones, people you haven't seen in some time...But it's always someone you know isn't actually in Deer Country. Someone who you know to be dead or to be back home, in another world, another time. Eventually, these loved ones will start to walk after you, looking like undead versions of themselves, limping along, completely unresponsive to things you might scream or say to them. They just gaze at you with unseeing eyes. They don't seem to want to hurt you though, no matter how threatening or unnatural they may look. What they want is some closure: some parting words you never got to say, one last embrace, a final "I love you." Once you have, they will turn to ash and you will be filled with a temporary sense of peace.

THE EXIT: At last, you see the light at the end of the tunnel. Literally! You see a familiar street lamp or maybe even the surprising sight of your own backyard. It's right there! You can even smell the fresh air. Oh, thank goodness! You have no idea how you wound up finding the exit all of a sudden, but let's get the hell out of this place! You take one step through the exit and suddenly you're pitching forward, falling, tumbling down into a massive pit of...very squishy mushroom. The fungi are growing all over the ground and over the cave walls. They gave you a vivid hallucination to lure you in and damn if it didn't work! Time to crawl out...

Except gosh, you're really drowsy and dizzy...Are those skeletons you see? Are these mushrooms already growing on your skin? Yup! These mushrooms trap living organisms with hallucinations and quickly consume the body by spreading rapid-growth spores all over your body. If you're strong enough you might be able to crawl out in time, or if you were with someone smart enough not to rush through the exit, they might be able to throw you a rope. You can wash the spores off with mushrooms and if the mushrooms had already started to grow, you will just have to rip them off your skin - and yes, that's as unpleasant as it sounds. Otherwise, people can die quickly in this trap. It only takes a matter of minutes for the mushrooms to start growing.

AS ABOVE, SO BELOW: The worst of the Catacombs rests ahead. You are given the warning: THE KINDNESS OF THE WORLD IS BEHIND YOU: HELL IS AHEAD. AS ABOVE, SO IS BELOW. THAT WHICH HAS BEEN, WILL RETURN AGAIN. Before you is a horrifying black hole and you don't necessarily know why it is horrifying, but even the bravest soul will find themselves trembling in its presence. It feels like a creature watching you, waiting for you, patiently evaluating every weakness you have ever had. You will feel a crippling sense of doubt, of anxiety, and you will be crushed into a sense of incompetency until you are bursting at the seams. You will feel the urge to admit to your companion, to someone, what your faults are. If you are alone, you will be driven to contact someone with your Omen/Omni. Some may even feel the urge to confess to the entire network the things they feel most incompetent about, begging for forgiveness that they are not a better, stronger, smarter, faster version of themselves. Only when they have admitted to their faults will they be able to step forward into Hell...

And that is when they will feel as though the world has turned upside down. They will be walking down and then suddenly, they are coming out of a hole and going up into Trench. Out of a random grave in the Sanguine Graveyard, no evidence of the Catacombs around them. Congratulations - you made it out.
BLOOD DETOX
WHEN: March
WHERE: Throughout Trench
CONTENT WARNINGS: Blood, blood blisters bursting, blood pollution.

While everyone is going off the rails in other levels, things in Trench are flourishing. Plantlife is rampant everywhere and things seem to be bursting with life. This includes the apparent expolusion of blood pollution from the earth! Part of Moss King's process apparently includes a phenomena known as Blood Blisters. You can see these Blood Blisters throughout Trench. Some look like the size of soccer balls while others are the size of cars. They are red fleshy lumps growing out of trees or out of the ground. Some grow out of the sides of buildings or maybe, unfortunately, in your living room. They are hot to the touch and reek like blood.

That's because they are filled with blood. Blood from Sleepers, animals, humans, Pthumerians - everything. It's raw blood pollution the Moss King has extracted from the earth like a disgusting magic pimple. None of the blood inside is salvageable for magic and you do not want to be near these things when they pop. Rotten blood splatters the immediate area and it smells pungent. Worse yet? If you're caught in it, it's almost inevitable you rapidly turn into a beast. If you're lucky to only see it happens, don't count yourself lucky for long. The downside to this process is it calls in beasts from your immediate area within seconds.

Thankfully, that's what blood hounds are for. These solid black canines are stacked with a massive pair of antlers and bound around Trench to take care of the Blood Blisters. These dogs stand beside the Blisters and seem to have a magical ability that draws the pollution from the Blisters and gathers them in the center of their antlers. This blood seems to fuel the beasts and they might be one of the best examples of how some beasts in Trench maybe don't deserve to be killed. It's a far better alternative to the Blood Blisters bursting.

The bloodhounds can scent out Blood Blisters and seem willing to help Sleepers find them. Additionally, if someone is exceptionally gifted with animals or very patient, they may be able to adopt a blood hound and train it to summon the blood pollution from Sleepers on command. This process takes an enormous amount of energy and will take months to train a bloodhound. The bloodhound in the meantime does feed exclusively off of blood pollution, so be prepared to keep it fed or else it might just turn on you and eat your blood instead!

It isn't all bad in Trench though. For people who are regularly completing the challenges and levels in the other two prompts, you will find random prizes waiting for you back at your home! You can choose from the following list what kind of prizes your character might get from winning challenges. You can win multiple items. We ask our players to be reasonable and honest about what challenges and how many their characters could realistically win to obtain the following prizes. Some prizes may be more difficult to acquire than others.

THE PRIZES

MOON DROP: A highly valuable stone that can completely cure beasthood, blood pollution, injuries, and even bring one back from death. Gained only if at least three challenges are completed with the survival of two or more characters in a group and the escape from the Catacombs Completion considering "surviving" them. To those who have it used on them, they may experience hallucinations and a commune with Moon presence, feeling as though she is in your head.

A REALLY LAME T-SHIRT: A plain white t-shirt that perfectly fits your character with the bold print of: I'M BARELY SURVIVING TRENCH AND ALL I GOT WAS THIS T-SHIRT.

PTHUMERIAN BLOOD DROP: A blood drop allegedly gathered from a Pthumerian. The Pthumerian Blood Drop can cause instantaneous corruption and/or beasthood in those it touches. It can be used to greatly enhance weapons to cause insanity in those they strike. This blood drop is contained in a small vial and once it is used, it cannot be used again. Its enchanted effect on a weapon lasts as long as the weapon is intact. Once the weapon breaks, so does the effect.

A SPACE HAMSTER: This adorable Space Hamster! How adorable! It's a hamster that never needs to be fed! Maybe it contains the cosmos within its mighty, furry body...Or maybe it's just a suuuuuper cute hamster. Do you dare defy its sweet little gaze?

SUN CHALICE: A chalice you can place in the sunlight. This gathers sun magic. Once a liquid is poured into the chalice, a Sleeper can drink from it and alleviate monthly blood symptoms or blood type-specific abilities. It does not fully remove abilities or suffering, but consistently drinking from the chalice can drastically help. The chalice will need to be placed in direct sunlight for at least one hour to work. Its effects last a week before it needs to be placed back in the sunlight to charge once more.

A POKEMON: A non-legendary pokemon of your choosing complete with a pokeball. Can evolve as per usual in canon (which also means if it requires a Pokemon canon specific item to evolve such as a fire stone, it will still need that to evolve in Trench). Pokemon can maintain canonized moves as long as they do not break the game setting and are used reasonably.

CHAINS OF VASTA LI MAEVE: An apparent urban legend of Trench- a young woman who was once shackled in chains and left on the shore as a sacrifice to Mariana by her deranged mother. Vasta spent several days screaming to be freed. The legend says Mariana took pity on her by taking her life but allowing her shackles to remain as a curse in Trench. These chains have been granted to you, glowing a faint, ominous red. When you shackle a living creature with these chains, that being will not be able to move until you or another removes the chains from their bodies. While they are chained, the sounds of a screamed woman will terrorize the being trapped, and the scent of the ocean will fill their immediate surroundings.

WELL-DONE HAMMER: A massive hammer that is made out of...a...giant chicken leg that has been cooked to perfection! You can eat it and it will taste great, sure, but it is actually a very powerful hammer that can land a seriously damaging blow. The only downside is that it smells heavenly and you will probably summon a lot more beasts using it than not...But hey, you can get in some KO shots before it's eaten, I Guess.

A WEAPON FROM HOME: You can get a powered weapon from your character's canon world - whether it is one of their own weapons or another weapon from that canon. Weapons can come in with their regular powers as long as game-breaking abilities are nerfed/able to be stopped by Pthumerian intervention.

AN ITEM FROM HOME: A general item from home whether a trinket or some clothes or a picture. Something from your character's canonical world even if it wasn't from their storyline. For example, maybe Harry got his mother's necklace or Draco's necktie. You can have characters obtain headcanon-based items as well. Like weapons, any powered items just need to be nerfed to not break the setting.
CODING
anthropophagite: Mine (Ghoul - kakugan 40)

Ken Kaneki || Tokyo Ghoul || Warmblood

[personal profile] anthropophagite 2022-03-08 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
JUNGLE LEVEL : Giant frogs (cw; violence, possibility of body horror)
[ Just like many others, Kaneki followed the drumming sound and ended up playing the game. The blood offer is frowned upon by him - he is aware the blood is a big deal, and so is losing it, but when he touched the player pieces, his finger got pricked much to his surprise - nothing can cut through a ghoul's skin, right? Or it shouldn't.

He has no time to think further about the matter, or to leave, because he is pulled into the game and its jungle right away. It's extremely disorienting at first, but Kaneki eventually realizes he has no choice but to keep playing and to keep going until the very end. he wants to leave the jungle, after all!

So he plays... rolls his dice once again, and his piece moves three spaces. The riddle that comes next is confusing and Kaneki isn't even sure what it means, so for a while he just stares at the game wondering what to do next. Does he roll his dice once again? Does he go out to find whatever the riddle meant? ]

What... am I supposed to do now? [ there is no time to answer, though. A slimy and yet extremely fast tongue quickly tries to grab onto the person next to Kaneki. Only by pure luck he is able to spot it, pushing the person out of the way and instead he ends up being the one taken back to the frog's mouth by the tongue. The frog is strong and its jaws close quickly so Kaneki can't escape, but Kaneki's own instincts kick in - he is a ghoul, he is stronger than ten men. His skin is tougher than any weapon, and he is much better at fighting than he wishes to admit. Thus when he fights back, he will be as quick and as strong, if not more.

Using both his hands and a grunt, Kaneki pries open the frog's mouth. Saliva coats him, but that's fine, Ken is not worried about that right now. With a grunt, kaneki suddenly kicks the frog's tongue hard enough to cause the animal to fly a couple of meters and hit a tree nearby, while Kaneki jumps from its mouth before the impact. That's one frog down, but more will come and the amphibians quickly surround their targets. ]

Stay away! [ not that the frogs understand him, but no matter. He is a afraid and unsure of what is going on, and he fears that someone will get hurt or killed. So he stands up, staring at the animals, breathing heavily. It's alright, he can protect others, these are just frogs, right? ]

JUNGLE LEVEL : Perking up (no cw, but kitty ears :D )
[ The riddles and the challenges that accompany them are difficult, but so far Kaneki has been able to survive them. He considers it's probably because he is lucky enough, but perhaps he should also consider his own abilities. Except he is not kind to himself, therefor kaneki doesn't think he is all that capable, even when that might just be a lie he tells himself.

He rolls the dice again and his piece moves along the board game four steps; a new riddle forms and kaneki as usual tries to decipher it and ties to figure out what is to come next. Perhaps a giant dragon will come in and eat him? Or there is a sudden volcano and lava ready to kill him? After playing Jumanji for a while, he does not expect kind outcomes.

But nothing like that comes. Something itches behind his ear, thus he reaches it to scratch - but the ear also moves. In fact, it feels strange... it feels... fuzzy? ]
Eh? What's this? [ a mirror? Water, perhaps!

A small river runs nearby and Kaneki rushes to see his own reflection in it... and suddenly he finds a lot more than just weird ears: whiskers and a strange now wet-like nose. Spots start to appear on his skin, and teeth turn into fangs, while his fingernails reshape themselves into claws. With a gasp, Kaneki falls backwards only to sit on top of his... what?

he quickly tries to look behind himself, and surprise! He now has a spotted tail too! Apparently he is now half-jaguar.]
What is going on?!

CATACOMBS LEVEL : Hunger (cw; cannibalism)
[ The next level. Creepy at best, a nightmare at worst. And for Kaneki, naturally it will be the latter. Passing through that strange passage and eventually ending in the catacombs was terrifying, but not just because it was creepy, but because Kaneki could feel something scratching at the back of his mind; he hadn't felt it ever since he arrived, hoping it would not be something he had to deal with so soon.

Hunger.

Kaneki is hungry.

And that is about to became a huge problem, specially as the smell of death hits him. With just a whiff, kaneki suddenly feels that sharp painful feeling squeeze his body, and feels that discomfort that ghoul hunger brings. Nothing is more painful than ghoul hunger; if one believes in Hell, this feeling could be described as Hell burning inside one's body. It's incredibly hard to control and incredibly hard to ignore, and Kaneki's body screams out for nourishment that the boy does not wish to give it.

He drinks water and hopes it works, even though it doesn't. The eyepatch that covers his eye gladly hides Kaneki's ghoul nature for now: that eye has turned black and small red veins start to spread across the cheek, but thankfully with the lack of light inside the catacombs it will be difficult to see. And Kaneki's lower back itches while he feels himself salivating from time to time, although he quickly tries to wipe away the saliva threatening to fall from the corner of his mouth. Naturally this means Kaneki will try his best to avoid everyone else but the smell of humans makes him dizzy, hungry, and it's so sweet, so tender, so tasty, and he ends up finding himself walking right towards other Sleepers he might find.

But as Kaneki delves deeper into the catacombs, the smell of fresh bodies becomes intense enough for him to follow - and suddenly Kaneki is running after it, starving to have a bite, starving to taste whatever is giving off that sweet delicious smell. He doesn't even care about other humans at this point, because fresh corpses? That's heaven to him and that's all he wants!

he doesn't exactly find corpses with still flesh on them, and instead Kaneki eventually finds skeletons. ]

CATACOMBS LEVEL : Calling fire (cw; burns, injuries due to fire, lack of self-preservation)
[ No one goes into a burning house blindly. even with the dark figures watching, Kaneki still didn’t think to go inside although he is worried but unsettled that they do not seem to care that they are about to be engulfed by the fire.

It’s the woman’s screaming that does the trick. It echoes through his whole body, like a punch to his gut, and tugs at Kaneki. At first, he only gives one single step forward and stills, but she keeps screaming louder and louder and the thought that he may still be able to save her crosses kaneki’s mind…

So he runs towards the house, forgetting about his own safety. It’s fine, he is a ghoul; ghouls are so much more resilient than humans, after all. Their skin is strong enough to withstand most weapons (including bullets!) and while Kaneki is aware they can still burn, he is certain he can do this: he can be quick enough and save the woman inside. Plus, ghouls also heal much faster!

He can do this, he can save her. It's fine.

But there is nothing to save, indeed. In the end, he is a fool, like the others who ventured into the house like he did. And yet, the woman’s voice is still there, so he feels like can’t give up. With high temperatures, kaneki’s skin begins to burn; surely his body tries to quickly heal the wounds, but he is weakened this month due to his blood type and he soon realizes he might be in way over his head. ]

Is anyone here?! I’m here to help! [ he calls out for the woman, hoping she will call back. The next room, perhaps? Perhaps that’s where he will find the woman screaming. Or perhaps that’s where someone will find Kaneki and pull him out of the house before he kills himself ]

CATACOMBS LEVEL : As above, so below / Corruption (cw; mentions of cannibalism, possible body horror, mania, other corruption symptoms)
[ Nothing really prepared Kaneki for whatever is happening here. He feels like he has been in a maze, the catacombs endless and without an exit. The fear he has been going through what feels like years now tires him physically and mentally, specially after this month that has already been so rough. He is so weak, but also terrified, but also so lost. While Kaneki is surprisingly resilient and can adapt to a lot, the past few months (that he remembers) of his life were a roller-coaster of pain and suffering, and now he is met with more of it. Never ending. Without a rest.

He is so incredibly tired.

And slowly he loses sight of what is happening. Oh, so slowly. Drop by drop, another and another, and at some stage it all has to tip over and overflow, doesn't it?

by the time that happens, Kaneki finds himself in front of the hole. he doesn't understand the feeling, he doesn't understand how darkness like that can just twist his guts and squeeze and make it feel like his heart will jump out of his chest. But the compulsion to talk is also there, telling him to spill his sins... all of it mixed with madness.

Kaneki's uncovered eye is glossy and the eyepatch covering the left one is soon stained by blood that drips from that eye. He was always pale, but now his skin looks yellow and dry almost like jaundice taking over his body. And surely right from the start he felt weakened, but now he can barely move with how tired he is physically. The symptoms of corruption are there, and Kaneki would never recognize them for he doesn't know what they entail. He never experienced corruption before.

Emotionally, his brain is all jumbled up, and he cannot focus on one single thought. The black hole that glares back at him demands a confession and apologies, but Kaneki has so much running through his mind that when he opens his mouth to mutter an apology, quickly that thought escapes him and he moves on to something else. The pain and confusion grow and grow, and eventually Kaneki falls to his knees, gasping. ]

Mother... mother...! [ where is she? Why hasn't she also arrived to this world?! Why is he the only one who did?! ] I can't be kind-- I have to eat...! [ and eating means consuming others. Kaneki is a cannibal and has been surviving by feasting upon humans, by feasting upon the dead. ] Ugly, I'm so ugly! [ horrendous and monstrous. He cannot be kind, even though that is what he promised his mother he would be.

Gripping onto his head, Kaneki coughs out an apology, begging for his mother to forgive him for being a monster, although his mother is not there and the black hole in front of him does not answer back. ]

TRENCH : Near the ocean
[ when he was finally free from the challenges, Kaneki returned to the empty house that was now his "home"; empty, broken, with little inside because he had no time to fix it up and patch what was rotting since he had arrived just few days ago. And yet, he already went through so much that it feels like an eternity since he crawled out of the ocean as a small helpless red squid. After opening to the door to his house, kaneki finds two of the prizes; naturally he was wary of them at first, but upon further research and sort of poking them here and there, he came to the conclusion they weren't tricks and would not suddenly blow up in his face when he least expected.

But eventually he takes them and just wanders back to the beach where he first showed up, to stare at the ocean that he feels that it haunts him. It's not familiar, yet it is; he came from it as a small tiny squid and he remembers that. In the end, kaneki isn't sure if coming out of there was the right choice, if regaining his senses was something he should have done. He is still so lonely and still so desperate, and still so unsure that his existence is worth it.

Kaneki sits down, watching the angry waves, before he drops the Sun Chalice and the (really lame) T-shirt next to him. As tacky as it was, the shirt spoke the truth: kaneki is barely surviving, and he doesn't even know if he should be there. Everything feels so wrong but he has no idea how to fix it, either.

With a sigh, Kaneki calls for his Omen and smokes pours from his shoulder to form a Chinese Red-head Centipede that quickly wraps around Kaneki's fingers. He looks at it for a second, before smiling a little ]
What am I doing? [ the Omen won't answer.

But perhaps someone passing by might hear Kaneki ]

Jumanji

[Fern likes board games. Who doesn't? They aren't quite as exciting as actually going out and having an adventure, but they've got their own quaint charm and it's always nice to just hang out with friends and family.

He should really be more suspicious of board games in Trench, but he isn't and that's probably suddenly stuck in a thick, dark jungle with whoever it was he was playing with. He isn't too worried about that, a jungle doesn't mean a whole lot, and weirdly enough, this time this environment shift isn't one that he finds too bad. In fact, after a while he starts to find it fun.

Maybe one of them has had a bad roll, and now there's a giant, sticky tongue whipping out from the cover of the surrounding foliage. Fern will yelp to get down, but who knows if he's fast enough.

Maybe there's another roll that's accompanied by an ominous rumbling, and a split second later water is crashing through the trees.

Maybe the next roll isn't nearly as immediately dangerous. A die gets rolled, and there's a soft buzzing noise that increases. Fern starts, then smacks his own arm, killing a tiny mosquito before frowning in confusion.]

Weird. I guess mosquitoes can eat plants, too?

Catacombs

[The catacombs are a much less pleasant adventure for Fern. Once he's gotten his feet back under him he notices the huge stone head of the Moss King, and gives it a deep scowl. Oh, for the love of - this jerk.]

Seriously, dude? Geez. [His experiences with the Moss King back in Deerington hadn't been great, and he's still salty about all that time the Pthumerian spent following his boyfriend around. He's grumbling as he goes and pokes at the equipment, taking a flashlight, some clean water, and medical supplies. Thanks to his plant abilities he doesn't really need anything else. Lucky him! He'll wait for any companions to grab their stuff, before heading through the statue.

Maybe they come upon a pool of dark water, which seems perfectly normal! Right up until Fern gets a better look at it and, thanks to being a darkblood, seeing an unusual shimmer to it.]

Uh, I don't know if that's safe to drink....

[Later on, a rumbling and smell of smoke fills the air, and they stumble upon a burning house. Fern being Fern starts to make a beeline for it, to help whoever is inside, but a second later is remembering the whole flammable grass thing and stopping awkwardly, torn.]

We gotta help whoever's in there!

[And then they encounter the worst thing of all: painted, mixed up tiles. Fern has been through his share of puzzle rooms in dungeons before, and he's never been all that good at them. Heck, Finn was never good at them, either, so he's double-doomed here. He throws up his hands in exasperation, making a frustrated noise.]

Seriously?? I can't stab tiles!

"Don't worry, I'm not THAT thirsty."

Granted, she sort of was, but she was pretty sure she wasn't about to risk some crazy Trench thing happen to her, and the easiest way for that to happen was to be dumb enough to consume something in a strange place. The bad thing was, they might need to actually walk through the muck to get to the next area.

"Think we can go into it though? It's not going to actually be able to dissolve us the moment our skin comes into contact?"

That sounded messed up enough to be a thing, right?

quicksand:
[Kokichi's only barely started this, and he already feels the edges of a panic attack threatening to get the better of him. He swallows - swallows his emotions, swallows his pride, everything he's all too used to doing - and he's moving forward through this jungle...this dense, obnoxious jungle. This jungle that looks like something Gonta would know the way out of, would be perfectly confident in--

And he said the G-name. Cool. Coolcoolcool. That's gonna dwell on his mind for a bit. Or so he thinks when he realizes that the ground beneath him is shifting. It's getting softer. His eyes widen. That's quicksand.]

Shiiiiiiiiiiiit.

[Well, that's already dangerous, but he's luckily worldly enough to know what to do when you get into quicksand (though he hardly thought he'd ever NEED to know). Of course, this kind is making him sink faster than expected, and of course it is, it's a game. This isn't real quicksand. It's game quicksand. But it feels real.

He clenches his teeth and leans forward.]

H-HEY! IS ANYONE OUT THERE?! I NEED SOME HELP!

[Just don't panic. That's the last thing he needs to do. Panic and risk breaking something.]

trophy hunter:

[So this was an unfortunate discovery. Some smarmy jackass who wants to hunt The Most Dangerous Game within the literal most dangerous game. Kokichi's already gone on the run. Directly talking to this guy is a lost cause considering his first instinct was to raise his rifle in his face and thus he barely got away with his life. It's eerily familiar having someone with a long-range weapon running after him, and he can only be glad this one doesn't have poison.

He swears under his breath before he hears a shot barely whizz past him.]

GET BETTER AT AIMING, YOU COLONEL MUSTARD LOOKING FUCK!

[He hears the sound of a reload, and speeds off.]

Crapcrapcrapcrapcrap--

[He's found a rock to hide behind. Now he's just gotta try to find...gotta find a way to throw this guy off entirely.]

calling fire:

[This situation has Kokichi looking less than amused. His eyes have glazed over, staring at the embers of the burning building. Some part of him wants to run in. Some part of him says if you save these people, maybe it'll make up for what you did before, but he knows that isn't true. It's not like anyone he knows is in there. It's not like anyone real is in there.

The door flies open, and the woman screams. Kokichi doesn't even flinch. He just stares the scene down, his common sense and self-preservation luckily getting priority over anything else.]

It's a trap. [He says, simply, feeling another pair of eyes on him.] Don't be stupid about it. [His voice is cold. Uncaring. He should care. In truth, he does, deep down. But he's used to this - used to letting himself be seen as the dissenter. The one willing to challenge the good nature of others. Kaito wasn't here to go barreling in to prove his point (provided he didn't tackle him first, which he very well might have). But he isn't going to risk his life. Not here. Not now.]

chronology of seasons:

[This is probably the place where Kokichi's felt most at ease thus far. It's a puzzle, and he's good at puzzles. He's smart and resourceful, and that's what is required right now. He'd luckily been studying the history of Trench since he arrived, and he's already trying to put the puzzle together in his head. Of course...he's also liable to play around a little bit. They've got time.]

Ummmmmmmm. So. You got any idea how to do this~? Those are some real ominous pictures they got goin' on here. Real edgy stuff. [His expression is bright, smiling at his companion, before he glances to his nails.] I mean, I don't look into edgy bullcrap, so this may just be on you. [A lie. But he wants to see how capable his companion is.]

till death do we part: (cw: possible detailed undead, possible mentions of psychological horror)

[This is the most chilling thing in Kokichi's perspective. Whereas others might've seen one or two people, three or four - he's been dealing with the never-ending crawl of 15. And And he can feel them beside him constantly. They're judging him, he feels. It's harrowing, because he doesn't know what's going on. Some of them are dead - Rantaro, Kaede, Gonta, and from how their plan was panning out and how he looked at the end of things, Kaito was another. Some of them were supposed to be alive. Maki, who he always hated but never really tried to understand. Himiko, who was always caught up in her mage act to do anything but seemed like she was growing. Kiibo, who he never valued as another human being, or so he said, he was a liar after all...

And Shuichi.

This is the most troubling thing about it all, Kokichi with 15 regrets trailing behind him, 15 people he doesn't want to see, doesn't want to let go of, doesn't want to do anything with, even look them in the eyes. They shamble behind him, and he stares at the ground. They were all dead. Except him. The one who probably deserved to survive the least. He can't say anything to them, because he's scared. He digs his fingernails into his arms as he hugs himself, continuing to move with this mob of zombies behind him.

Finally, he's stopped by someone else.]

Get out of my way.

[Said tonelessly. He's willing to look them in the eyes. Just not his own regrets.]

as above, so below: (cw: panic attack symptoms, potential unreality)

[He's frozen in a moment in time. This is when it all begins to crash down on him, this is when his composure shatters. It was bad before, but now it's really ebbing away at him. He needs to confess - needs to tell someone something, but what does he tell them?! How does he explain what he did?! He participated in a game of murder, he enabled the game to go on, he made more people die because his plans screwed up - he sacrificed probably the one person who was willing to be his genuine friend by showing him true despair and letting him become his weapon to save his own skin.

He's having a panic attack. His eyes are filling up with tears, he doesn't have anyone and that's because Shuichi was right, he was alone, he'd always be alone. That was for the best, wasn't it? Wasn't it?

He's not sure. He's just staring at his hands - he can almost imagine them dripping with blood. That's everything on his hands. Someone comes up behind him, and he jumps.]

1. Catacombs (ah shit here we go again)

Jason felt the vines wrap around him and drag him under. He struggled against them but their grip on him was too strong. Soon his vision was nothing but earth. Panic immediately seized him as the experience brought back memories of falling into the Sumerian temple. He braced himself for the impact and immediately took up a defensive stance the moment he could orient himself again.

“Shit.” That about covered his feelings about being pulled into more catacombs. The fact that this one looked to be a shrine or something only made him more on the alert. He first checked to see if he was the only one who fell down here. If indeed he had a companion with him, he went over to them at once.

“You good? Anything broken or sprained?” The last thing anyone wanted at a time like this was an injury.

2. Catacomb Challenge: Calling Fire

[He should be suspicious of a random house down here; the logic part of his brain knows this. But the part of him that is a soldier only sees the burning building, only hears the cry of someone trapped inside. And his instinct is to charge in and help whomever may be trapped in there.

Jason wraps his bandanna around his face to block out some of the smoke before charging in]

Hello? If you can hear me, yell so I can find you!

[And he does hear the scream, luring him deeper inside]

3. Catacomb Challenge: Chronology of Seasons

What the fuck?

[No, really, what is with this room? He can see that there are twelve tiles and even recognizes two of them: one that's his own Patron and the Moss King. The rest are a mystery to him. He turns hopefully to whoever might have stumbled into this room with him]

You got any idea what this shit's all about?

4. Catacomb Challenge: Til Death Do We Part

Jason was trying to press on through the catacombs. But as he traveled he couldn't help noticing faces out of the corner of his eye. He dismissed them at first-- he'd been seeing weird shit ever since this month started. Mostly having to do with mushrooms growing everywhere. After a while, though, the faces became more clear to him. They became recognizable.

“Merwin,” he breathed out. The corporal stared mutely back at him. “Fuck,” Jason hissed. “Fuck this place.” Anger and sorrow welled up in him as he recalled those last moments. Merwin wasn't alone; Joey was there too, and Clarice.

They weren't attacking him, but he figured it was only a matter of time. Lucky he fell down with his backpack, where he had the tent peg stowed away.

Luz Noceda | Pale Blood |OTA

[personal profile] imaglyphwitch 2022-03-09 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
Jumanji

In another life (not Trench) Luz probably enjoyed this book very much, and the movie was a cool way to come out with a sprawling plot engaging enough you could forget about how horrible some of the CGI truly is. Now, actually experiencing the Jungle, a place that a humble girl from Connecticut was not used to, was different altogether.

And even then, that was not JUMANJI jungle.

FROGS, WHY

Luz loved all kinds of animals: amphibians, reptiles, mammals. What she did NOT love was one of those creatures being huge, and now intensely concentrated on trying to eat her up. Worst still, she'd come close to being eaten at one point that now she was missing a shoe, having seen it go down the frog's gullet and slowly get dissolved.

"HOLY CRAP!" Luz yelled, scrambling the tenth tongue lashing attempting to finally snatch it's prize up.

Water Troubles

And she thought the frogs were bad. Rolling the die and trying to not drown from the onslaught of water was something completely different. If you come upon her, you'll see an entirely drenched girl hanging onto some foliage, the water threatening to know her into the water.

"Lil' help!" Luz stammered through shivering teeth. "You can't turn into a boat, can you?"

Catacombs

In the belly

Luz was tired. She was missing a shoe, her clothes were absolutely sticking to her skin right now, and her hair looked as if it had been put through the ringer. Despite all of this, the moment Luz hears the scream from the woman, the teen is taking a breath and ready to run full throttle into the fire and save whoever was in there.

"Come on! Don't you hear her? We've gotta act quickly!"

No Exit

"NO NO NO NO!"

Luz is already wiping the mushrooms off of her, and is definitely NOT having a good time with it. One of Luz's friends in Deerington had been Ellie, and she had given her an earful of those messed up mushroom infected people. Coupled with Lance's past memories in the corpse filled nightmare had made Luz jump immediately to the worst conclusion.

"It is off? Can you see it? Darn it, I thought we were done! Don't you see the exit?"

As Above, So Below

Luz took one breath, then another. She was pretty sure this was coming, and irritatingly, she was starting to feel herself crack. Staring into the hole, she saw someone she didn't expect to see after all this time, and it broke her heart.

"Mija. Was it really so bad, being with me?"

She could hear the sorrow in her mother's voice, the hurt there that she had been so convinced that she'd never have to hear, because there was a her back there, right?

But the doubt of that was starting to dig itself into Luz, and though part of her knew this was a trap, the guilt didn't allow that logic to factor in.

"No Mami, it wasn't! I think about you everyday, I..."

Her voice trailed off and she was doubled over on the floor, wanting this to end. She could take just about anything, and had weathered just about all of it, but hearing her mother's sad voice, wondering if her daughter had hated their home?

That was enough to break her.

[ Well, well. Here's Tanya with a single hanger-on while this young man has an entire crowd with him. While she might normally oblige and get out his way, she's starting to get impatient with the current situation -- that is, aimlessly wandering around like some sort of brainless zombie herself, her only company her trusty former adjutant.

It's not as though she feels absolutely nothing about Visha following her around in apparent death. Having known how capable Visha was, Tanya can state with confidence that her loss is -- and has been -- a terrible blow in terms of human resources. At the same time, people die all the time in war. It would have been convenient to have Visha accompany her to Trench, but if the First Lieutenant happened to lose her life in the course of battle after Tanya left their world, she can't be terribly surprised about that. It this is all just a farce, then all the better. Either way, even she has to feel a little emotion at seeing the bright eyes of her capable adjutant dulled so thoroughly.

Ever faithful, Visha shuffles to a stop just behind and to the side of Tanya, and together they regard the young man and his gang of corpses. There has to be a trick to leaving this area, but Tanya with her one follower has a lot more to lose by experimenting than this person with his fifteen. If he's feeling listless, then all the better; maybe he'll be more amenable to losing a few of them if it comes to that. ]

[Normally, Kokichi is a big fan of games. He's good at them, and he takes great pleasure in winning - and even has a bit of admiration for those who are able to beat him. After all, he's an expert. This, however, is no normal game. Not to mention that the jungle theme makes him on-edge to begin with...

Before he knows it, he's face to face with a giant frog.]

Piss.

[That's all he says before he's shoved aside by another boy who gets swallowed up by the frog in his place. His brows arch. Holy shit--and then the boy comes right back out and he kicks the frog back.

Alright. Kokichi's impressed. He's about to comment when more frogs begin to surround them. Shit.]

Sorry to say this, but I don't think they understand you!

[Alright. His tactician brain is running through possible strategies.]

Can you clear a path? You seem waaaay stronger than me.

[His first strategy is to run, of course. But they can't run unless they have an actual way out...]

Everybody was Kung-Frog Fighting.

[Johnny Lawrence wasn't the most well travelled person in the world but the jungle felt more like home than Trench did for the most part. Besides a snake was at home in the wild.

Except Johnny wasn't actually a snake and the wildlife apparently wasn't as afraid of him. Out from the brush a long tongue lashes out and wraps around his arm. He turns to face it in surprise.]

What the hell!?

[He catches sight of the frog just as it tries to pull him in, He plants his feet and whips his arm back to pull the frog off balance instead of getting pulled in by it. The ensuing chaos continues with Johnny and the frog on the ground. Johnny's arm is half in it's mouth and he's wailing on it's face with his free hand.]

Get off me you slimy son of a bitch!?

[Please help him.]

As Above, So Below.

[Johnny has made it this far into the catacombs without dying. That's honestly a pretty good record for him here. But there's something about the warning and the void he's run into that's rubbed him the wrong way. He stares right back into the hole and tries to find whatever's lurking in there.]

Give me a fucking break.

Why don't you come out of your fucking hole and face me like a man!?

You think you're going to scare me by saying that life sucks- I know that!

[There's a pause and he picks up a rock and throws it into the hole in frustration before looking back to whoever's with him.]

This thing doesn't know the first thing about hell. Probably has never had to deal with a son who can't stand the sight of him.

I don't... [He hates admitting it.] I don't know. But there's got to be some way out of here. It's just probably some kind of puzzle. So presumably, I'm going to find it.

[The mass of 15 corpses behind him stand still. It's like he's ignoring they're even there, so much as they have their gaze trained on him.]

Smart guess says it has to do with the magical corpse friends mulling about, but fuck know what.

[She has far less, too. Just one girl with long brown hair in some kind of militaristic uniform. He's also assuming this presumed sassy lost child isn't a child at all by her tonality - just incredibly short. And in a military uniform as well, at that.

She's probably used to grim sights, so he's not going to mince his words.]

Calling Fire.

[A burning building in a cave should have been enough to clue Ruby in on the fact that something was wrong here. But she caught sight of the figures in the window and her instincts kicked in, she had to help the people in there. She grabbed a hold of her massive scythe and quickly dashed toward the door to break it down.

She rushes in and can't tell just how hot it is or isn't because of her cold blood. But she smells the smoke and hears the screams and that's enough for her. She pushes in despite the flames to try and get to one of the people in trouble.

Unfortunately her good nature gets the better of her and she runs right toward one of the shadowy figures and feels the energy being drained from her. She keeps pushing on through the house regardless until she collapses in one of the hallways.

She could use a hand.]

Trophy Hunter.

[The sound of gunfire of can be heard throughout the jungle. Ruby's found herself the target of the Trophy Hunter but she isn't about to go down without a fight. She manages to evade the shot and quickly dives under a nearby log for protection. She raises her head up and peers through the scope of her sniper rifle to try and track the man down and line up a shot.]

That guys is crazy good-

Did you see where he went?

Quicksand

[Ruby's looking over the game board as if it's a map. She turns it upside down and to the side while looking back and forth at their surroundings.]

Okay... Give me a second. I think I've found out exactly where we are. I got- I got this-

[She takes a step forward and suddenly feels a faint squish. She tries to lift her foot but it doesn't rise up out of the sand. She looks down in sudden horror and throws the game board into air.]

I take it back! We're lost! We're lost and I'm stuck and this sucks!

Jumanji

[ The demon walks through the forest as par his daily routine. Suddenly, his ears pick up on a distant rumble. Thunder? He looks to the sky and finds no sign of a storm approaching. Curiosity strikes and he resolves to investigate. He reaches a section of the forest close to a stream. There in the grass is a peculiar object. A board? He crouches next to the wooden box. Magically, it opens. He sees a variety of animal pieces. ]

Jumanji?

[ He reads out loud. The demon picks up a crocodile piece. The demon feels a slight pinch and notices his blood dripping from the thumb. He drops the crocodile onto the board in order to observe the wound. Before he can think any further, the demon feels a tingling sensation. His body twists and contort as he is brought into the board game. ]

So what piece did you take?

[ The demon finds himself in a dense jungle. Albeit, he's not alone. While standing next to another player, his curiosity is piqued. ]

Catacombs: Beware of the Water

[ The demon finds himself in a dank labyrinth. The catacombs do not frighten him as he is able to see decently well despite the dark corridors. He trails down one hall and then another. In the distance, his eyes see a figure. Distracted, the demon walks into a puddle. As he moves forward, the demon notices that his body begins to feel pins and needles. His submerged legs wobble through the water. ]

Excuse me! What brings you here?

[ The demon approaches the figure. Even in the dim light, one can see that he struggles to walk straight. His knees buckle, and the demon falls against the stone wall. ]

I'll be happy to help you on one count: there doesn't seem to be a physical exit. I've already explored this room from top to bottom and all around. As you say, the solution must lie with our esteemed guests.

[ The advantage of this young man having so many followers isn't just in their fodder potential; they're also potentially meatier in the clue department. Yes, she's lucky he showed up so conveniently. ]

Let's see if there are any patterns common to both your friends and mine.

[ She raises a hand toward Visha, who predictably continues to stand there and say nothing. ]

This is Lieutenant Serebryakov, who served as my adjutant in the military. I would say we had a good relationship. This should go without saying, but as far as I know, I didn't have any hand in her death.

[personal profile] stoicsilhouette 2022-03-09 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
[ At this point, exhaustion was really setting in both physically and mentally. At a distance the fiery house appeared to be exactly that. Another tiring puzzle with absolutely no satisfaction other then "yay you didn't die!"

Upon closer inspection... A flaming death trap.

The wind was thick with an ashy sooty fragrance. Looking up Megumi thinks he sees a silhouette slip through the front door. It could be a trick, let's face it, it probably is a trick but for the first time in awhile, Megumi's logic seems to go up in smokes.

The whaling sound from within is very reminiscent of the ghostly figures in the smoke of the unsnakely. Megumi's eyes trace the house. He is as still as a statue and completely silent, and it is in that moment his mind has been made up.

That's it. The time for action is now or else there won't be a later.

As he runs up to the entrance, a shadow wolf appears to be whining and tugging aggressively on his cloak. Whipping around he crouches down and begins stroking her head soothingly. He softens his gaze and looks directly into her golden eyes. Without words she understands that this is his choice.

He gets down on his knees (as a precaution to the smoke) as soon as he enters the home. He is not that out of touch with his reasoning just yet. Upon hitting the foyer, a sweltering heat brushes up against his face. Sweat begins to pour off of him. He looks down at his hands, which are covered in a dark gritty grime, but to his surprise his blood seems to be keeping the burning sensation at bay for now. Scuttling around he hears the shrieks of a screaming woman and follows the yells. Looking up, he sees the same figure from before calling into a room.]

!! Get down- [ He reaches out and tugs at the young man's ankle. ] And stop shouting you're wasting your breath.

[ His voice is low and a bit hoarse. ]

[Johnny's fresh off reviving after the battle with the Leviathan. He's... Not doing the greatest at the moment. Every time he closes his eyes he sees a flash of Paul getting chewed apart by the monster. Of his students or the few people he could stand here getting hurt. He can't shake off the feelings that he was horribly out of his depth here, that he couldn't actually do anything to prepare his students or friends for the dangers that lay in wait here.

He copes in the best way that he can. By drinking himself into a stupor. If anyone comes by the abandoned warehouse Johnny's converting to a dojo it'll be a bigger mess than usual. While he's actually picked up some training dummies, boards and matts for training they've been thrown and knocked over. There's a strong sent of alcohol and maybe a little urine throughout the dojo and it's easy to understand why. There are countless beer and alcohol bottles strewn or smashed about.

Johnny can be found laying in the middle of the warehouse half hugging and half strangling a punching bag. His omni is on the ground and he's singing along with the song playing. ]

[So there's no physical way out. It is a puzzle, and it's based on their...companions. The girl remarks they may be patterns, and he nods, listening as she introduces her one shambling friend. Lieutenant Serebyakov. So his hunch about them being in the military was dead-on.]

Okay...

[He glances back, then...sighs.]

These are, um...my classmates. We all had pretty terrible relationships. I...only contributed to three of their deaths.

[His admittance to that is reluctant as he motions to the dead-eyed three. One was a taller boy with pointy hair, a goatee, and a space-patterned coat hanging off of one shoulder. One was a particularly giant boy who had long flowing hair, was incredibly muscular, but wore a suit. And the last was a girl in a pink outfit with goggles on top of her head. Might as well contribute Kaito as well, since they went down together with his plan. Kaito, Gonta, and Miu.]

As far as comparisons go, they're people who we worked beside. We were also in dangerous situations.

[Since he'd consider a killing game almost on par with a small battlefield - both led to senseless casualties at the very least.]

The only thing that pings my interest is the dangerous situations part. But if this were a test of our might, you'd think they would've attacked by now, yeah?

[While Kanon didn't feel any desire to attend to any of Sayo's social obligations... some part of him knew he should check up on Johnny. Putting aside her bizarre choice in mentor figures, his presence in her life meant leagues to Sayo, and was one of the things that kept her from descending into a full self-destructive spiral that if nothing else would make everyone's lives worse.

Speaking of full self-destructive spirals that would make everyone's lives worse, Kanon walks into the dojo and instinctively winces.]

i. jumanji | perking up cw: transformation into an animal, all other prompts possible in the thread.

[Natsume has never been good at games. He didn't learn how to play tag until he was ten or eleven, and that was only because he transferred to a school that was small enough that the children were desperate for playmates, desperate enough to include the creepy kid. That had lasted until he caught a glimpse of something shadowy and full of teeth in the corner of the playground and bolted as fast as he could the opposite direction, pale and shivering and terrified.

The other children hadn't asked him to play after that.

Board games are straightforward, though. Roll the dice, move the pieces. True, the jungle setting is a little...weird, but Natsume is adjusting to the strangeness of Trench. Compared to the alternatives, this is actually quite nice.

He tilts his head, reading the outcome -- PERKING UP, then shrugs and glances over at the other person he's playing with.
]

Your turn, I think. [He pauses, rubbing at his nose. Strange, he wasn't feeling about to sneeze before...]

ii. catacombs | til death do we part cw: undead people, panic attacks, mentions of child neglect/abandonment likely in the thread.

[You know, nope, nuh-uh, Natsume's changed his mind -- he prefers the jungle. He vastly prefers the jungle. He'll take the mosquitos and the hunters and the frogs over the crushing, enveloping blackness of the underground labyrinth. It's not that he's claustrophobic -- small spaces are actually sort of comforting for him -- but the blackness goes on forever, in all directions, with no rhyme or reason.

And, after a few steps, he notices that there's someone following him. Usually it looks like a young girl, similar enough to Natsume that she could be his twin. The uniform is different, and her face is blank, expressionless, but the hair, the eyes, the features are his identically. Occasionally a silent couple takes the girls place, also with familiar features. They follow along, silent and watching and decaying.

But perhaps strangest of all is the fact that Natsume just...ignores them. He stares straight ahead, shoulders scrunched up and tense, taking one purposeful step after another. He seems intent on pretending the figures aren't there, and will do a fairly successful job of it -- until and unless someone else points them out.
]

iii. blood detox cw: mentions of gross blood.

[Once Natsume is "home" again, he is sorely tempted to just collapse into bed and stay there indefinitely. He doesn't think anyone would blame him -- not after...everything.

But within a few hours he's out again, finding a patch of sun to sit in and review the various notes he's taken on Trench -- and the Jungle and the Catacombs, of course. Natsume alternates between re-reading these notes and working on patching the various holes he's torn in his uniform. He's not the best at sewing, but he makes do.

Making it harder, though, is his newly-appeared Omen. She frolics around in a very un-solemn way, batting at the thread and pouncing on the papers. Natsume patiently untangles her at least six times, frowning and gently chiding her each time.

After an hour or so of this, though, the Omen suddenly stiffens, staring across the field towards the dark shapes of several bloodhounds, who are stalking towards one of the blood blisters. Natsume is great at minding his business, but apparently his Omen isn't, because she abruptly launches herself forward, hissing and spitting.

And of course Natsume has no choice but to follow, scattering papers and sewing supplies everywhere and tripping over his feet as he calls out:
] No, no, no, no, wait!

[He could...use some help.]

[personal profile] floatsaway 2022-03-09 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
I. JUMANJI

I-A: In the Jungle You Must Wait

[In all honesty, Ochako should have expected something like this to happen in a new, strange world. Nippon was just the same, with oddities happening left and right nearly every month, but they never really seemed to invade houses like this...or at least not to her and Bakugou, when they shared an apartment in Nihonboshi.

Speaking of, finding a place to stay in this world was...harder. Much harder. For the time being, they just chose the nearest roof to shelter themselves and would deal with actually settling another time. It was a roof and a bed, that was enough for one night or two. Though, of course, old rooms were always filled with old surprises. Ochako was making the bed when she heard it - the drumming. Louder and louder it called to her, until she found herself face to face with the infamous board game. Curious, and spurred by an exhilaration that only seemed to deepen the louder and faster the drumming became, she opened up the board and read the brief rules, picking up one of the carved wooden pieces - that of a bear - and the lovely, ivory dice. She's turning them in her fingers, wondering if they're real, but the next second Ochako is gasping at a sudden prick to her finger. What in the world?

The figure falls from her hand and lands upon the board, righting itself almost immediately. But that's not all...the dice also fall in her shock, and hit the game board...and the pieces slices along the board. One, two, three--.]

Five, huh? But I didn't mean to--...eh? [The mist swirls in the middle of the board, and words appear within, like a crystal ball revealing its secrets.] In the jungle you must wait, until the dice read five or eight. What does that even me--AAAAHHH?!

[In the jungle, it seems, because Ochako slams hard onto moist, dense moss and jungle soil. Massive trees, vines, and plants surround her and she gawps in horror a second before smacking her face.]

Not even a week and already this place is pulling this sort of thing?!

[Feel free to hear that exasperated sighing from the brush a little ways away, Ochako is gathering the game board into her backpack which, thank fucking god, got sucked in with her.]

I-B: Giant Frogs

[Well, it's not like Ochako's guard wasn't up the moment she entered the jungle proper. She didn't have time to full change into her Hero costume, either, so all she's sporting right now are pieces of it - the head piece, her wrist guards, and boots. It looks kind of hysterical with her shcool uniform, but hell..it was the only clean thing she had for today (which would certainly not be clean for long).

Marching through the forest, Ochako thought first to maybe get a bird's eye view of the jungle proper - try to spot a river, or a body of water. Moving too much in this humid jungle would be sure to dehydrate her, and she needs to find the essentials first and foremost. It's actually during her moving up toward a large tree that she feels in, the sensation of being watched, and her brows furrow. Welp, if there was a predator around, she could probablt just float herself to the treetops of higher and avoid--]

Haaah?!

[It's not the massive tongue shooting out from no where that startles Ochako, really. No, she has a best friend back home that can do that, too. Tsuyu's froggy quirk is something she got used to, and being flung around or jerked about with the young teen's long, flexible tongue has become the norm. But this wasn't Ochako's best friend. Oh no, it was a very large, very hungry frog, and it was bearing down on Ochako like the behemoth it was.

It already had an arm wrapped up in that sticky tongue, and was pulling the girl forward as she tugged back with a grunt, grinding her teeth together as she digs in her heels.]

Whose...r-really got who, huh?!

[She grabs the sticky appendage with her other hand, and the pads on her fingertips glow pink as the frog begins to lift up slowly in the air like a balloon, flailing and kicking wildly as its gravity is removed by Ochako's quirk. However, she's a bit preoccupied with the one to notice the movement of others, still camouflaged, closing in on her.]

I-C: Quicksand

[Want to know the best thing about having a superpower that nullifies your gravitational pull? This. This right here. Ochako nearly got shlorped into the ground with her boot sank into the goopy muck, but she was quick to shoot out of of the wired grappling hooks from her wrist guard and pull herself free with the recoil. From then on, it was floating a good foot or two off the ground with her quirk activated on herself, using the thrust from her boots' little boosters to propel her forward.

She's less bothered with trying to get out by now, finding that all attempts to float her way up to the treetops were met with resistance. Dense foliage, birds cawing and pecking at her when she gets too close to their nesting grounds, or clouds of insects that swarm and buzz and try to sting and bite at her arms and face for the saw reason - getting too close to their nests or hives.]

This place stinks!

[Not usually a complainer but...honestly!! Ochako is used to this horsecrap happening from when she was still in Nippon, but it was never to this extent!! And there was usually some warning! Hell, at she was at least given the downtime to settle into Nihonboshi before it all went to shit. This was literally sounding the alarm and hoping she hit the ground running. Not exactly the greatest introduction...when Ochako still barely knew shit about this world proper.

Whatever...best thing to do at this point is make sure she stays safe and can find a place to resume playing the game. It said rolling a five or eight would free her? Or something?? Hopefully no one else got caught in this garbage...]

I-D: Trophy Hunter

[Deeper into the jungle Ochako goes, the less confident she is about finding a safe place to sit down and try to finish this stupid, fucking game. Each attempt was met with more inane bullshit trying to kill her in some way, and the only other time she did get to roll, she barely had enough time to read the message before a bullet whizzed by her cheek as she was immediately needing to move and move FAST.

Truly, thank fucking god for her Hero training at UA preparing her for survival and battle scenarios like this. Plus, Ochako has a teacher who's literally a gunman and armed sniper. While she's not exactly Deku, she does at least know to keep herself still and hidden, and to never move in a straight line. In fact, it's partially a boon having the jungle here be so dense and thick. It provides decent cover and shelter from the jerkoff trying to shoot at her.

...Actually, why the hell is he trying to shoot at her anyway?! She'd love to ask, with a kick to his teeth, but right now she's a bit preoccupied. Thankfully though, as she races over a fallen log, Ochako gives it a quick tap and the object lifts into the air the moment Van Pelt steps up onto it, and he's scrambling to keep his balance and from falling. It's a rather comical sight, seeing the cheeky Brit flailing and essentially rolling this massive log in mid air while screeching profanities after a tiny brunette who throws him the bird over her shoulder with a grin.

It won't fend him off forever though, just a mild distraction until he decides to chance jumping down. But, at the least, it'll give Ochako a head start...and whoever else may be in this mess, too.]

[ Frogs! Frogs! Frogs! ]

[ At this point, Alice has gone through a series of mixed feelings about her new weird legs. Currently, she is leaning towards positive. This is because she is neatly outhopping a frog. ]

Ha ha! Loser! You can't ambush me, I'm twice the predator you are! What if I turn it around and eat you?

[ The new reflexes also played a very major part in this but Alice is always one to take personal credit for things. Also, the frog has eaten her game board so she's stuck with it for now. What Alice has not noticed, as of yet, is that there is more than one frog in the area, and that she is heading right for it. ]

[ Sand! ]

[ A fine froggy chase later in some other gameboard, Alice sits smugly upon a frog corpse and sets the board down between the big goggling eyes. ]

Finally! I've had enough of these fellows, what's up next?! [ the roll. the riddle. the furrow of a brow. ]

Something that looks slow but isn't? Is it talking about me?

[ Her perch seems lower to the ground than she thought it was. Huh. She'd better not be shrinking. She'll punch the Moss King square in the nose if she is. ]

[Lost! ]

[ The catacombs are full of twisty bits and riddles and instructions pointing this way and that, and Alice has a notable flaw in dealing with all of this - namely, that she is an idiot. ]

Why can't this place have a die and board? That was easy, all you had to do was give it a roll! I'm hungry, and I want to leave! This sucks!

[ "Sucks" is a Sleeper turn of phrase which she is quite enjoying, if she is enjoying little else about this horseshit. ]

[ Mushrooms! ] cw: body horror, coming soon in the comments

[ It's very natural for Alice to bolt for the exit straightaway - bah, she should have known this'd be Abyssal style trickery. She coughs, irritated by all this obnoxious mushroom dust, wipes her face, gets her feet under her to hop out. Her magic's weaker in this stupid cave and she doesn't like it, but she's naturally quite good at jumping and she doesn't need any help from darkblood floating or dumb rabbit legs anyway!!

...Yeah, there are skeletons, but... they probably were just not as good at jumping as she is. She yawns. Might be time to take a nap, to be honest, she has been down here for what, days? Weeks? And it's so nice and soft here... ]

Seriously, why?! Why the violence?!

[Luz was slowly getting resigned to the fact that she was going to have to survive and continue playing until the game was finished, but the moment she rolls the die and hears the gunshot, she freezes a little like a deer in headlight. In a minute, Luz is doing the thing she knows how to do best: running as fast as her gangly legs can carry her!

It's just as well too because this guy is serious: she'd been trying to lose him for ten minutes, even lobbing plant glyphs his way to make it harder, though just when she thought she lost him there was a gunshot in another direction.

Oh no. She was not his ONLY target!

Luz wished she had her staff, because without it she had to do a lot of creeping around and, sure enough, it seems like he ran into the wrong sleeper because she somehow manages to float him up and slip on a log he was standing on. As the sleeper attempted to run, Luz was right behind, motioning the girl to follow her. She'd already thrown down some more plant glyphs, and once they were activated there was lush, tall foliage now between them and the hunter].

Hey, that was really cool, how you did that! Do you have powers?!
