Interesting sigil. It's a representation of something you actually can observe, which is the shadow of one object falling on another object. When your planet is between the Sun and the moon, the shadow your planet casts on the moon is a lunar eclipse. When the moon comes between your planet and the Sun, the shadow it casts on your planet's surface is a solar eclipse.
Nothing casts a shadow that is not real, so... I'd say that witnessing the motion of the planet and its effects on nearby bodies is an excellent way of observing it while on it.
