Heart trees are the weirwoods with faces, carved by the Children of the Forest in the Dawn Age, before the First Men came to Westeros. They're sacred to the old gods. Many castles in the Seven Kingdoms built their godswoods around them. They're very nice, but I don't know that anyone has found a use for the sap or leaves.
