Love and fear compel everything they do. It's not really much more complicated than rats running to food, or from a fire... humans will run towards or away away from things in the service of not feeling all kinds of physical and emotional pain.
What you find confusing is when people seem to choose pain, or reject comfort... but it's in service of the same principles. It means that somewhere there's less comfort and worse pain.
