Hayato was looking over the brackets when Oscar comes running up to him. He blinks in surprise, not recognizing him as any of the competitors, but still offers him a friendly smile. Maybe he had questions about the match, or had a friend who was competing.

"Sure, what can I do for you?"

Was he holding fruit???

He was totally holding fruit.

Oscar just grinned.

"These guys are a handful, huh?" He asked, as if he wasn't associated with any of them at all. He was completely innocent, not living under the same roof as one of them! "I just wanted to see how everyone was holding up and thank them for their hard work.

"And... I totally cut up too much fruit. You want some?"

A pause.

He raises an eyebrow, but after a moment he will reach out and take a piece of offered fruit. He puts his other hand on his hip and gives him something of a suspicious look.

"I'll accept this fruit, but just so you know, you won't get far trying to bribe the ref."

He is half joking, but also, he knows how fucking rambunctious all of you are.

"Please. I'm not trying to bribe anyone. I'll just be glad when that blonde guy isn't stomping around my house making declarations of war at my mentor anymore!"

There was.... no lies here! Oscar Pine, normally far more polite, cracked under the ref's pointed commentary and rightful suspicion. No tricks were at play-- that was dishonorable, and he would never use food as a vehicle to cause harm.

He's just trying to make sure the Ref has the stamina to not throttle anyone.

Hayato barks out a very amused laugh.

"Look, we're all hoping this tournament tires Johnny out for a little while," He says with a grin. Look, they might be drinking-buddies-slash-karate-enjoyers but Hayato knows exactly what kind of person Johnny Lawrence is.

Ah, but, he must be one of Ozpin's then. Johnny had a rivalry with the others, but for whatever reason, it was especially potent towards Ozpin.

"But good, I'm glad to hear that. I wouldn't want you to waste a quality commodity." Honestly, he was kind of surprised he had fruit, when produce could be so iffy here sometimes. It looks pretty legit, too? Which is why he's not giving it back. He might not need it but man. An orange sounded great, actually.

He was Ozpin's, but not in the combat student sense. Although the kid was clearly observant and ready on his feet, it was clear that physical fighting just wasn't good thing-- and growing berries and melons from seeds he had stockpiled were.

The citrus was another matter. That had taken a little bribery, but it was worth the effort.

"It's okay. I've been composting since last fall and setting up a green house for potted plants. It's not much, but a little love and patience can go a long way "

Oscar was just glad that the Ref got it.

"I was a farm hand before I left home. Vines and small shrubs are pretty easy get growing no matter what."

Yeah, see, he's already tearing into the orange. He shoves a carpel into his mouth with zero hesitation.

"We're very lucky this place managed to ensnare a few folks that actually know what to do with the terrible dirt around here," He says, impressed. The kids in this place could be so surprising! It never ceases to amaze him.

"Have you been enjoying the tournament? You must have some friends competing, yeah?"

"I've got people I know on at least two of the teams here," Oscar admitted with an awkward grin, quietly embarrassed yet pleased by the praise.

"And, it's not like I actually fixed anything, Sir. I just made my own dirt from kitchen scraps and a little patience."

"That's still something to be proud of. Even though I come from a small fishing village out in the middle of nowhere, I wouldn't know the first thing about how to cultivate dirt, let alone make it grow something. It's just as well I never went into farming."

He was too much of a busybody anyway, and there's only so much pestering you could do in a small town. He left pretty early on to pursue his actual interests.

"You're a friend of Penny's, too, right?"

The question about his friend got him instantly grinning.

"Yeah! We're both from the same world, and we all did some training kinda alongside each other with the same people."

Although his memories from Atlas had many negative overtones, there were plenty of good ones too-- such as seeing his first movie in a big theater, fancy parties, and Penny's overall exuberance.

"She's great, isn't she?"

Opinion of this kid instantly improved. Not that it was bad to begin with, but he's glad Penny has such nice friends.

"She is! She's a very remarkable young lady."

He is truthfully very fond of Penny.

"Be sure to stick around until the later half of the tournament. You'll be in for a fun treat, I think."

Hayato earned a curious look from the boy-- torn between honest interest and amusement.

"Between Penny and Ruby, I'll be here all day. You're not planning to fight her, are you?"

He peered up at Hayato, as if trying to size the stranger up.

"She's a very unique fighter, even by Remnant standards. Some might even say she's one of a kind."

"Hey, hey, I can't spoil all the fun. You'll have to wait and see!"

The answer is yes, actually, as everyone will later find out. There's a lot here that's extremely amusing to him, and he's debating how much he should say. When their match gets announced, it'll be a riot.

"But I'm aware of how special she is. We're house-mates!"

And also like, part-time city patrol buddies, among other things.

If there was any way to get the boy's face to light up, it was this.

"Oh, so you're the one she's staying with!" He beamed. "I was hoping that she found someone good to be with when she didn't want to stay in the same house as the rest of us. I mean-- it's a squeeze right now, but she liked being able to do her patrols on her own back in Atlas."

He was now very eager for the surprise match. Anyone whom Penny approved of was bound to be a good person.
