Who: viktor and others, open to all with some closed prompts in comments
What: june catch-all, some tdm prompts
When: june
Where: various
content warning; terminal illness, arcane season 1 spoilers
misc lab stuff and various fruits.
[viktor's lab in the willful machine is usually left unlocked when he's working inside. friends or acquaintances have likely been told they're welcome to stop by if they like, either to say hello or to get help with whatever a vaguely sketchy lab could handle. of course someone he doesn't know can just walk in too or knock. maybe there's a sudden downpour and that ajar door is tempting? go for it.
the lab has been slowly filling with all sorts of nonsense on the various tables- lasers! tasers! some weird machine hooked up to a blood gem? it is not unlikely to be walking by and hear some minor booming noise and either a curse in czech or a satisfied 'a-ha!' feel free to investigate.
this month there's something else too, a bowl full of fruit. all the fruits mentioned in the tdm in fact, there to be tested on though it looks more like they're just for guests if people are unaware there's some weird shit going on.]
Just a moment, make yourself at home. [he might say to guest. that would include eating some fruit, right? enjoy. probably not the raw lemon though, that's weird.]
[ooc; if you want to memshare i am game, my only hard limit on memories is no suicide stuff please. self sacrifice is fine! feel free to ask to make sure one is okay. if you'd like a viktor memory let me know any hard limits and what sort of memory you might prefer!]
gaze and time loops.
[having lungs mostly working for the moment is pretty great, in viktor's humble opinion. it means walking around the trench doesn't come with the risk of coughing up blood and attracting beasts and generally having a bad time, along with added perks like not getting so easily winded and going for longer. it also means he finds himself out longer than he usually would, which maybe isn't the best, as it turns out.
for example, making his way home through gaze and hearing the chilling cry of a beast, sighing and trying to make his way around what turns out to be the wrong corner. maybe that's where he sees your character before the snarling of a too close beast starts in earnest.
and then snap! they're both back about an hour, where they passed on the street. the look viktor gives is somewhere between resigned and 'fuck this, actually.'] There is a term for this. 'One of those days,' I think.

[it's refreshing to have someone as intent on this as he is- and really, megumi's theories are what started him down this path. so it is easy to wait and sip at his tea, mulling over what he has already read and picked apart on his own. a lot of interesting information, more than he was expecting down there.]
I think this tells us their limitations to a degree- however miraculous their powers they lack some inherent spark of creativity that fuels said powers. There is a way humans, or mortals like humans, think that is the key to unlocking the extent of their capabilities. It is... alarming and fascinating.
[maybe more alarming than anything. he's heard the sad story of julia sodder, this puts it in even further perspective.] It makes me think that each month we are being subjected to trials from the patron, though now it is unclear to me if they mean to put us through it as a pointed use of their power or it is... a stray thought, an influence.
[and a pause. he puts his empty cup down.] And whatever the case it seems to point that we are... fascinations to them, even if they do not ultimately need us. [so worse case they are subjects, insects in glass cages. hm]
no subject
The text said something about imagination, maybe that's part of the spark. [ Jotting that down in his notes. Humanoids tend to be real creative.] I think of imagination more in the sense of breaking what was previously established by going past the boundaries of what you think is possible. Someone once told me to envision a version of myself that exceeds my previous limitations. He said that's the way you can max out your true power and potential. I wonder if that could be applied to pthumerian as well. [ Quiet letting a moment pass finishing off the second muffin.]
I think the trials could be on a more individual basis with some choosing to use their abilities, and others having little control over the effects. The moss king and the tower definitely felt intentional and precise. Ha [ dry and sarcastic smile] It's amazing they don't fight each other over power each month.
[ Eyes wander back to Sodder's name.] If corruption comes from living in a world of fear and bloodshed, then Sodder essentially brought that upon this world before it was the trench, when she drained its energy. [ A pause.] Unless it was born into existence when the pthumerian were created as a result of their own actions and emotions. [Again he's speaking out loud as his mind tries to categorize the new information.
Finishing off the last of his tea. His expression and tone take a more somber turn.]
Do you think there's any way to reverse or pause Sodder’s dream?
no subject
Pthumerians do seem to be wedded to certain concepts. It's presented like a realm they rule over, hope or justice or the like, but I wonder if perhaps they lack the imagination to move beyond familiar grounds. [he muses, considering that bit about boundaries carefully. it's good advice, he thinks, even in merely the philosophical.] A wise man. Are humanoids not at their most impressive when they push boundaries of possibility?
That does make me wonder if this monthly schedule is a matter of universal agreement or they are truly tied to each month. For that matter what of patrons? Is there anything to these blessed days and those we are attached to?
[the question about julia has him leaning back to consider, a long few moments before,] From what I understand her power, or the power of the dream, was so vast she could not control it and little could be done to even put a dent. I fear there's little else I could offer, though it does make me want to ask some of the older here for more.
From what I gather Julia Sodder is a touchy subject though.
no subject
Why do you think that is?
[Megumi's never looked into anything relating to Sodder. His primary focus has been the pthumerian as a whole. But he can't help but to wonder if she's linked to corruption given this new information.
It's somewhat ironic, his fascination with these lesser gods is leading him to conclude they are just as interested in sleepers as he is with them. The idea of a magnifying glass looking down at Earth as a telescope looks up to the cosmos. Both trying to understand each other's universe and differences, while completely overlooking the blaring similarities. Never once seeing the eye behind the scope just missing that vital spark. Communication. ]
[He ponders for a moment, unconsciously rubbing the back of his neck, before circling back to Viktor's previous statement concerning patrons. ]
I've often wondered why we are tied to certain patrons as well. I have Dorothea. She gave me a very cursed "lucky" rabbit's foot about a week before my birthday. I wasn't sure if it was a coincidence or not. [ Shrugging his shoulders with a sort of pursed lip sour expression, thinking back on the "gift."A quick pause.]
Do you know who your patron is?
no subject
probably a good idea to ask some of the people he's met from the dream to get a better idea, but otherwise he shakes his head.] It freed them, but I would not be surprised if it had an effect on the world as well. More corruption, perhaps. It is a matter I will try to look into, and share what I learn when I do.
[it seems to connect to the pthumerians, and honestly? aside from paul megumi is the only person who he's found willing to dive more into all this information, what it means, what it means for them. refreshing, in truth.
he can't help a snort as he says,] Mine is Dorothea as well, as it turns out. Admittedly I have not learned much about her, or what she 'represents.'
I am curious about this gift- what did it do exactly?
1/2
Her gift was a lucky rabbit's foot. Any time I held on to it, I had great fortune while others around me suffered ungodly bad luck. It's why I hardly carry it around, with the exception of the full moon. Under that narrow circumstance it seems anyone who holds the foot receives good favor without any penalties.
[ A pause. Lips flat line and his tone shifts to deadpan.]
She's extremely clever and mischievous from the rare few times I've bumped into her. She frequents the forest area and loves to play games. Think of her as a smart child with incredible power. There is a plethora of lore on her. But no one source can seem to recall her origins.
[ As much as he complains about her, he'd be lying if he said he didn't admire her high regard for animal life. He also empathizes with her survival instincts and tactics. Living off the land is no joke, and she seems to make the best of it.
His eyes rest and lips go back to a more serious expression. The word child triggers his previous thought. ]
2/2
That would be great. You're very practical and I trust what you find will be thorough. [ Eyes unwavering as this is not a statement made frivolously. Putting faith in someone else is something new to Megumi, particularly here in the Trench.]
no subject
A double edged sword. [he snaps his fingers, momentarily pleased at remembering. but anyway.] Do you think there is anything to these patrons and being under them? For example the pair of us, why would we be hers, in a sense, and not another?
[a curious topic, but there is the more depressing one to finish. even though he offers a quirk of the lip at that trust. it is appreciated, largely because he does not think megumi seems the type to offer such trust or statements easily.]
I just hope it can offer some light on what the book says. Tell me, Fushiguro, do you believe that the corruption can be banished from this land entirely? Or do you believe it a natural force that would cause imbalance to lose?
no subject
Some pthumerian, will favor an individual even if they are not their patron. This makes me think that the qualities a sleeper possesses in their original world attracts a specific patron initially, but if the sleeper changes... [ there is a long pause- something between realization and quick repression occurs. ] ... their new energy could appeal to the attention of a different pthumerian.
[ Eyebrow raises. Taking a moment to consider Viktor's question on corruption.] I see it more like an invasive species. It wasn't part of this world originally, but it's here and we have to manage it the best we can. And as far as it being natural, I lean on the side that it is. [ Shifts his gaze to the side before looking forward again.] Back at home, cursed energy was brought into the world through a combination of nature and negative human emotions. It would be illogical to think we could eradicate it completely because the source of where it all stems from will always exist.
no subject
[conjecture though, like so much of this ultimately is. he wonders what trait he and megumi share that appealed to dorothea. surviving, self reliance are probably the answers, though he can't guess them.
and he's more interested in that answer, a nod as he digests it piece by piece.] Cursed energy, is that anything like what I saw you using? [he has been curious about that.] I think I agree. Corruption is too inherent now to sentient beings here. It seems... unfitting to see it as some great beast that can be slain in the same violence that likely made it.
no subject
Here, the creature I showed you when we first met, the unsnakely, was born out of the curruption of the very earth. In my world, the grief and destruction of natural disasters was enough to create specific curses dedicated to those catastrophes. [This is why he reasons that corruption can't be eliminated from the Trench. It's embedded and reactive to the current and past inhabitants. ]
But all their appearences greatly vary, with some looking human and others like distorted monsters. [A pause. An inhale followed by a quick exhale.]
When I was a kid, I could see them and interact with them directly. [ A flash appears behind his eyes, yet his gaze holds steady as his eyes flicker to Viktor before returning to the table.]
Most people can't see them though, unless they're in a life threatening situation, or have large amounts of cursed energy.
no subject
[and as megumi continues viktor tries not to frown- yes, he doesn't love the idea of children having to confront what he saw that day regularly. it does not sound like an easy life, which hardly surprises him but also hardly pleases him.]
Like when I saw it in the loop. It was... startling, to put it lightly. [he considers that for a moment before shaking the thought.] Fushiguro, you should know I am a blunt and curious person, I often ask questions others find prying or irritating, one way or another. I respect you a great deal, which is why I am warning that and telling you there is certainly no ill will if you tell me to drop my line of questioning at any moment.
I do want to ask if working with cursed energy like this raises your own corruption levels in turn. I know Allen can purge himself, thank gods for that.
no subject
[ A beat as he composes his thoughts on how to address Viktor's very realistic concerns. ]
[ Swallowing before saying a word. ] Cursed energy is something that's been congenitally engraved into my body. This makes me a conduit, and therefore able to utilize the energy to fuel what we call a "cursed technique." Corruption interacts with my body in a similar manner, passing through my body- not able to reside or build for an extended period of time. I've had my moments, but nothing I couldn't direct outwardly before having to deal with permanent or serious side effects.[ Eyes light up- an oh yeah moment! ] Oh, I also have Pepper, [ a quick smile ] he's still a puppy but he's a bloodhound who feeds on blood pollution- and anything else he can get a hold of. [ He's still in training, but he definitely wants Viktor to meet him sometime! ]
Curse energy is intrinsically tied to me and the world I came from. I can write something up on it and pass it on to you through text. [ Twisting his shoulders and back in a quick stretch. ] I'd rather be in a focused mindset when I put it together.
[ Oh boy, Viktor will be getting another text later on describing cursed energy in full detail. Mirrors is the perfect word to describe how Megumi sees the two energies work. Having never formally made a compilation on cursed energy, it's about time, as his interest has been highly piqued. ]
no subject
[but he listens, nods, another moment of relief to know it's something his body can naturally handle.] That is very good to hear, even middling corruption can cause such issues... but ah, clever way to handle the excess. [another quirk of his lips at that, mostly imagining what a blood hound puppy looks like. he's only seen the adults, please let him see pepper.] If she's ever bored have her over, Rio could use someone to play with.
[he wants to ask about 'congenitally' but decides to wait for the text instead, far easier to keep all the information in one chain there.] I look forward to it then. Honestly it sounds like you may have a very unique view of corruption, it could end up helping us understand how to manage it better.
I've only had a minor spike myself. I often wonder what the average level of corruption between all sleepers is, let alone Trench natives.
no subject
Nodding in agreement.] It's much easier- [in theory except when you want to keep something to yourself. Maybe being a tad more open is something worth considering. But that's still very uncomfortable. Baby steps.
Still engaging with Viktor, he is inwardly excited by the thought of Rio and Pepper playing.
He is full of energy and Kage could use a break. [Playtime with Rio is a definite go.] Next time I come over, I'll make sure to bring him too.
[ Hmmm now that last question is a good one- furrowing his brows in thought-] People presenting with higher levels have a dark presence that surrounds them. It's something I use to track beasts. [ Head tilts to the side.] But at any given time your guess would be as good as mine. [ A pause] I'd say it depends on the moon and which pthumerian is active. Some cause larger scale spikes then others. I remember running around like crazy every time a blood blister popped or a butterfly was killed. The concentration of pollution was so intense the effects were instant and dire for anyone in the wrong place at the wrong time. And if someone manages to escape all that, the next month they may still carry some pollution from the previous. A small negative interaction may prove deadly just because of the compounding stresses.
[ Lips flatline. Imagining friends dealing with corruption minor or not is concerning. Being on the other side of the question- how were you able to get your spike under control?
no subject
Ah, the blisters. They were the first thing I saw here. [gross. he nods though.] I hadn't realized how much the moon was involved in things. It makes sense, it does seem to be involved in everything in the Trench one way or another.
Palamedes noticed it first, mostly mild changes in behavior that made the spike more obvious, since we have no way of seeing the corruption ourselves. That seems one of the more troubling aspects of higher corruption, I've seen cases where the person's personality changes almost guarantee they will get worse and avoid help when it comes.
But as for myself it was not so grave. I spent time with Palamedes, spoke through some matters, and that helped. The baked goods helped too once we realized. [he shakes his head at just how much god damned baking happened.] Palamedes is a blood minister so minor corruption is something we deal with often, unfortunately. Largely we handle that the same way, making sure he takes time off, keeping an eye on his behavior, etc.
Time skip!
Sleeping in much later than he intended to, Megumi's mind runs at a neurotically fast pace compared to his sluggish moving body. He's already about an hour late, and has completely and uncharacteristically forgotten to let Viktor know ahead of time. Plagued by countless sleepless nights, the toll really starting to wreak havoc on his physical body. Strange dark purplish-blue bruises line his pale wrists and mouth area- almost as if something had gripped that part of his body too tight.
One foot in front of the other moving as though something heavy is tied and chained to both feet. While, his upper body moves more freely swaying in a manner reminiscent of someone who has been drinking way too much. But that is not the case. Moving through the world feels like walking through water, every step met with a greater resistance than the last. Luckily, everyone seems to get out of his way without him having to make much effort. It's strange but he's not going to question that.
Looking up, he is met by the familiar sight of the warehouse where Viktor's lab is located. Before going in, he leans up against the wall. Back sliding down till he’s on the ground with knees to chest. Unfortunately, the need to sit is too great, but it’ll just be for a moment. Just enough time to catch his breath.
A pulsating ringing sound echoes in his ears, the volume increasing second by second. It’s deafening. Breaking out in a damp cool sweat, he reaches into his shadow, pulling out his tea canister- his blood pressure dips drastically causing an icy sensation to his creep down his spine-no longer able to hold himself up- as the light around him dims to a sepia color before tunneling and ultimately fading to black.
Kage rushes into the lab, her agility and finesse on full display as she quickly navigates through the space without hitting into a single test tube. A blur of black shadow, dashing about determined to find Viktor. ]
no subject
he's coming to understand how different that is when the people knew you, cared. a slow lesson but one nonetheless.
when kage comes in it takes viktor a moment, pulling himself up from where he sent megumi a concerned message about his delay.] Kage? Where is he?
[he worry goes to grim determination, the formless shape of the concern now sharpened to a direct purpose and point. he'll happily follow kage to where he needs to go, and further still rush to kneel at megumi's side, bad leg be damned.]
CW Lots of eyes
Outside a thick black sludge clings to Megumi's back. The consistency is tar-like compared to the boy's deep watery shadow that glistens just to the left of his body. Getting closer the mass begins to collect itself taking the shape of a small child. It's skin onyx black with an obsidian glassy sheen.
Hundreds of eyes open in unison covering the entirety of its body. All various shapes and sizes staring wildly in every direction. A single commonality between them being the color.
Each set is like a gatekeeper holding different emotions hostage. Pupils whirl, darting all over the place. Until simultaneously all the wiley gold eyes stop and snap, landing ditectly on Viktor. Daring him to make a move. It's an intense territorial gaze- ready to pounce, if given the opportunity.
Long wet claws hover just over Megumi's mouth as the other hand presses up against his throat.
Its own maw almost unhinges, stretching a few inches past any normal human's jaw capacity revealing two rows of jagged white teeth.
Defensive. The creature looks back and forth before letting out a high pitched wail.
Thousands of overlapping voices whisper in unheard converstaions. But as a community one mournful voice comes together to warn]
STAY BACK! STAYYY BACKKK!!! IT'S ALL HIS FAUULLTTT!
[Instinctively Kage rushes in between Viktor and the demon.]
[OOC: This is just an introduction to the demon before they actually do the ritual! ]
no subject
he does know now enough to recognize this is that dream business, that all he needs it to take megumi's hand to delve in and try to help. (and that clearly his exhaustion before? his last visit? must have been related. he can feel whatever touch of guilt he needs over that later, for now focusing on the situation.]
If I can grasp his hand I can help him. [that is said to kage, the hope that maybe between them they can get close enough for that. his attention goes to megumi.] Fushiguro?
[he'll take the risk to jump in and grab megumi's hand if he needs to, that he knows.]
[ooc; just stopping to say cool demon design god, love me Many Eyes mosnter]
CW Neck violence
Black hair shoots and bristles up. Lips recede back revealing large stark white canines that reach just under 3 inches long. A guttural snarling growl reverberates outward from deep inside her chest. Primal. Ready to strike.
Curious golden eyes shift focus from the approaching man to the aggressive predatory wolf. Threatened. A single sharp claw begins to pierce and dig into the soft flesh of the boy's neck. A fine line of blood trickles down his throat. Freezing on contact to his skin. A small cough escapes his lips from the increase in pressure.
Springing forward, the large shadow wolf darts for the demon--]
AN EXTENSION!!!
[ A thunderous roar booms from the creature. Pulling the plunged claw from his neck pointing it directly at Kage as chunks of blue ice fall. ]
YOU'RE GUILTYY!! [Eyes snap to Viktor]-
SAVE YOURSELF!! HE'S NOTHING BUT A CURSE!!! [- before returning to Kage who takes the opportunity to bum rush the demon. ]
[OOC: Thank you wild critters are fun to come up with! I apologize for the delayed response, I was away for the past 5 days, but I'm back. I hope your summer is going well too! ]
no subject
but the ritual was clear- grasped hands, eyes closed at the same time. his eyes go to kage just in time to see the wolf act.
rio decides to make an appearance as well, a hissing pink distraction that serves viktor well as he lets his cane drop and hurls himself forward to grab megumi's hand when the demon is too tangled up in its attention of kage. rio offers what support she can there, and when viktor grasps megumi's hand he has only a moment of looking at the frozen coldblood at his neck before closing his eyes.]
Cw: Hospitals - Coma/ Illness
To the side of her, Megumi sits in a chair, his back turned as he faces the girl. Heavy black energy reverberates outward and swirls around him. Embracing his entire being. In a room devoid of shadows his stark bold silhouette stains the sterile environment. Head bows forward, with his black fringe acting as a curtain over eyes.
A small mirror hangs on the opposite wall. A quick glance and maybe something appears to have rush by, but with another look- it's too late-already gone.
An astute eye may also notice the antique vase on a tiny dresser housing a banquet of white lilies.]
You’re too kind for this. [ His tone suppressing a greater emotion as the words come out just barely audible. Compartmentalizing. Thinking. Grieving.] ]
terminal illness cw
the girl is young enough his chest aches as he moves closer, eying over the machines hooked to her, resting finally on megumi. the shadowy energy is somewhat familiar now, enough that he approaches without any unease. he's certainly seen the good such dire energy can do.]
In truth I was thinking I was a fool for not checking in with you after our last meeting. [he answers, a brief moment to take in the rest of the room, half expecting that demon lurking.] You're being hunted, in a way. In your dreams and mind.
no subject
Straightening out his back before getting on to his feet, two stormy green eyes meeting Viktor's golden hue. In doing so, he completely avoids making any eye contact with the woman lying in front of him. It's too much. ]
Here take my chair, there's another one out here [ his hand gestures to the bright hallway. As he moves and passes the mirror, his reflection reveals a small black frame latched on to his backside. The creature's many eyes seem concealed at the moment. Taking no notice of anything unusual he continues walking towards the doorway. ]
