Quite well.

[The surprise to that surprises him in turn as he shakes his head with a chuckle, as well as choosing his words carefully. Does he admit he can be similar, or does he wait and get more of a read on the man?]

Not too often, but there's some players who can manipulate their way on the court. Some play fair, others charm referees to get their way, which is annoying but satisfying to beat in a game.

I've run into more people like that outside of games, though. They're a bit more dangerous.

[He quirks an eyebrow. Sometimes, Shoyo's naivety is charming; other times it's a reminder of just how seriously he took his sport and how he forewent many other typical experiences to spend all of his time on the court.]

You've seen more of that side of people than Shoyo, I take it.

You would be correct in that. Shōyō, as fun as he is, isn't too bright at times. He's oblivious to certain things, or at least was in high school.

[Tooru says this with the kind of teasing tone one does with close friends, and without any malice behind them. Even if some of those words are less than kind.

And speaking of maliciousness, a particularly nasty scene full of anger and bitterness after a crushing loss creeps up into the back of his mind.

In some ways, he's extremely bright...

[One of his secret shames is the fact that his raw intelligence and knowledge far outstrip his boyfriend's. Whether it makes the relationship unequal is a question he's still untangling and piecing together.

He nods, in limbo between acceptance and conflict, as he briefly meets Oikawa's eyes, and it's enough. He blinks, remembering as though he was there, at that time.]

...I suppose we're even. I've seen something that I'm sure I wasn't meant to, now, as well.

[He doesn't reveal, immediately, what it was, because he wants to see if there are things Oikawa is especially determined to keep secret. He can usually tell.]
