Of course! [ She chirps brightly. She’d expected Falco to want something more typically boyish or perhaps some grouping of fairytales (look he’s a baby in her eyes) but this was better somehow. Sweeter.
It fits him, she realizes. ] You aren’t embarrassed, are you? I think it’s sweet. I’ve always heard girls talk about how romantic it is.
[ Yeah, Sharon has never read a Jane Austen book in her whole life. ]

That’s my, um— favorite genre.
[ romance. he is thirteen and already knows he wants to marry someone. it makes his heart unfurl and his belly bubble with flutters and good-feeling. it’s the opposite of the world he grew up in, ravished by war. it was his motivation and dream. ]
I went to school for a little bit, in California, 1961— the kids would always make fun of it. And adults would say I’m too young to be reading them. I’m thirteen . . .
[ the tone implies: i’m old enough 😤. ]

Those kids sound like assholes and you shouldn’t let them make you question what you like. And a lot of adults don’t know what they’re talking about.
You’re old enough for romance books. At least the Jane Austen brand. I’d avoid the books with buff men on the cover, though, they’re… [ She makes a flustered, mildly grossed out face. ] Just avoid them.

[ he’s definitely not looking at her now. ]
Someone told me that, once . . .[ miss carmilla from his time in california. he was in the library picking out anything that looked good when— he was pointed out as a little perv. he feels the need to say now: ] I-I didn’t know they were bad, I just saw the couples on the covers and thought . . .
[ they were romance. ]
She showed me Austen, and Brontè instead. Miss Carmilla.

If they looked like smut, all the housewives would be too embarrassed to read them in public. Appearances and all.
I’m glad that Miss Carmilla was looking out for you. [ though he’s a young teenage boy, they tend to be curious about that kind of stuff. ] You know there’s a film, right? That’s the only reason I knew about the book, honestly. Girls in my high school were obsessed with it. Always swooning over what’s his face.

There’s a film? With moving picture, and, [ talking, moving characters in front of cameras—?! ] I— I need to see it, Miss Sharon—!
[ not want, sharon. need. ]

Need, huh? [ she’s beyond amused. she’s grateful she could give him something to look forward to even stuck as he were. ] Well, I guess I better find a way for us to watch it then, huh?
think we might be at a good place to begin wrapping!
It could be on the Omni—!
agreed!
Mm, I’ll work on getting it for us. [ she may not care much at all for the genre but she would endure it for this baby bird (she’d endure a lot for his kid, truthfully). ]
But until then, I’ll make sure you got the book. And a bunch of snacks. In fact, I’ll go grab that shit now. You don’t mind if I drag Confetti along, do you?
[ maybe she can teach it how to trade while they’re out. ]
:)!
I think he'd learn a lot from you, Miss Sharon . . . Thank you.
[ he offers her a talon, the curve of it in front of her to be met halfway. ]

one day she’s gonna get him to just call her Sharon. ]
