speaking of brawls
His attention is turned to the water. The tendril is buffeted limply by the waves. Could be dead, or... Midoriya activates One For All, and with a small running jump, Floats silently towards the vanguard. Midoriya has been assigned here as an all-around melee fighter with close and mid-range attacks. He signals with his arm that he's going in close to check it out.
A prescient stabbing sensation in his head--
"2 O'CLOCK!!"
About half the Hunters take his warning seriously and move into optimal positions. The other half are forced to dodge wildly as they trust only their own senses. The swell is huge enough that the water obscures most of the form of their adversary in the first few moments. Only the tentacles, lashing out in the wake of what (in retrospect) was bait, can be clearly seen as the water cascades down.
Midoriya shoots out tendrils of Blackwhip to yank a few over to set the other Hunters up for covering fire.
the brawl of brawls, a super smash
Heroes taught him well.
Dabi watches Midoriya move forward, in their group of twelve, five gathered around the burn-scarred man. Like him, they also determined the quickest way to end this threat was to kill it. There's no time to talk to it, to calm it, to capture it. There's no time to save it. End it instead. Dabi had told them the other six members of the group weren't of the same mindset... They'd have to kill it quickly before the other Hunters, particularly the young green one, could interfere.
2 o-?
The shout is enough that half of the entire group, Midoriya's and Dabi's group, split into formation, the others far less coordinated in a team effort. Waves arch upward, a larger presence moving within the incoming swell and surf. Tendrils sweep forward, the original bait lashing out to try and nab one of the Hunters by her leg, though she's able to avoid it with a slice of the crescent-shaped broadsword. Others are pulled away by inky tendrils and the long-range Hunters go down on knees or stand in ready position, aiming bows, arrows, crossbows, and throwing blades. Personal preference.
Waves crash down on the beach and break over a figure among the water (pick either red or purple or white) as the surf runs in. Feminine, larger than any of them, salty liquid cascading down the shoulders and arms which seem to melt into the dwindling waves all around it. Among the crash of the surf, soft moaning sounds drift crying in with the sea, single or chorus is hard to describe, and a feeling of sorrowful loss and longing pervade the dreary beach of black sands and eerie dark waters. The beast lifts its head towards the group, gore of a previous meal still lingering upon its face in the shape of a young arm, perhaps a little girl, dangling from the corner of its mouth like a forgotten broken toothpick. Tendrils flicker and whip against the waters, as if testing them before making any motion towards them. Sensing through sound in the air, vibration in the water, or sight is hard to tell.
"Disgusting." Dabi lifts his hand and a raging blast of blue flames rip across the beach, almost instantly melting the sand to glass beneath it as the flamethrower roars straight into the creature's body. Hope everyone got out of the way; that callous would trigger Danger Sense easily.
S'fine. He'll take first blood and end this quickly.
sorry for the wait--work and travel ate me and i was delicious apparently
They don't. That's just a fact, a stark shade of gray in a world made of them. This spurs Midoriya to stubbornly extend his hand, even to the Beasts who can't answer back--and potentially to the villain behind him whose gout of fire he neatly dodges. (Midoriya and Bakugou have pulled off similar moves.)
Midoriya kicks out, flying through the air and dragging tentacles with him. The ranged Hunters fire at will at the giant sickly-white torso of the choral Beast, which makes for a better target than the dark tentacles. When it's burned, its cries rise to a fevered pitch high enough to leave the eardrums nearest to them ringing. The little arm falls from between its teeth into the sea. There is no child with a missing arm to be seen in the waves. The Beast already claimed a victim before the Hunters even had the chance to fight.
It lurches into the shallow water, rolls once to shake off blade and Blackwhip, then rises again, screeching. Its shoulder and half its face are pink and crusted black. The smell of charred seaflesh fills the air. It charges forward up the beach, scuttling on all tentacles, quick to exact revenge on the insignificant land-minnows that dare hurt them.
Midoriya attaches himself to its head with Blackwhip again and yanks his arm back to hurl himself towards them, armored shoe aimed to kick.
that's life. always taking out chunks for the feed~
No surprise that the green kid dodges the flames. He's fast enough when he's not down with four busted limbs. Roaring past, fire splashes over the creature, momentarily inverting the colors of black water and blue flames from the expected black sky and blue water. Their party scatters to escape the blazing torrent, which leaves a glistening stream of glass across the beach.
Oh look, it's making noise. Seems like it's vocal enough to express pain and anger. Dabi scowls and claps a hand against his ear, shoving the other one into his shoulder as best he can to block out the noise. Fuck, so much for getting close to it! Of course there's no child in the water; it's most likely already down its gullet and swimming in the acids of its stomach. One more person the heroes couldn't save. Oh well. They can exact their revenge on it for the atrocities.
Dabi's eyes widen as the creature charges up the beach, pulling his other arm down and preparing to take off while still pouring the flames onto it from the front. He aims to kill it as fast as possible, so even while Midoriya is opting to rein it in and launch himself towards the creature. Iron and flesh meet at once, the kick strong enough to take the creature clean off its tentacled limbs and sail across the beach. It lands on the black sands with a crush, skidding through the grains in a trench-leaving path. Stunned for a moment, it has to gather itself before rising again.

The screeches would have no doubt been muffled properly underwater. Above it, they cut the air. The chill of the sea and its tide cool the brief orange glow of the beach. Boots stomp the imperfect obsidian there as Hunters scatter before the creature's path like minuscule plankton in recently disturbed waters.
Midoriya catches a breath in the rebound from his attack, pulled along by Blackwhip as planned. He yanks and tugs himself into another kick--yes, he will kick an enemy while they're down but intending to fight--and he knows that with Danger Sense. With an instinctive drive, it thwaps at the needling green insect with two tentacles and sends Midoriya flying, a small spurt of blood escaping his nose. His anchoring Blackwhip disappears. Like Dabi, Midoriya aims to end this quickly, but--he got too hasty. He is still a young Hero, after all.
The Beast rises again and plunges forward, as uncaring about the change from sea to land as an amphibian. The Hunters' broken formations are still regrouping amidst shouted instructions, and the one in green who took point is struggling out of the shallows into which he fell.
"HERE!!" he screams at it, voice feral and filled with the taste of blood-soaked sand, trying to draw its ire away from the other Hunters so they can concentrate less on dodging and more on dealing damage.

Dabi lowers his arm and leans to the side slightly as the creature flies past him and crashes into the sands, dragging itself along in a trench trail as it skids to a stop. The flames and heat have left parts of said trial glass, crunching beneath the boots of Hunters rushing around the area. Hmph... the brat's got some power in his legs. Big surprise.
But that decision shift to close combat gets the expected results. Dabi might give him some points for wanting to close the gap and crash into the creature once more, but with all those tentacles flailing around, did Deku really expect to make much headway without getting blocked or grabbed? Especially when the creature doesn't look stunned and stilled yet. Ignoring the hero smacked to the side, Dabi lifts both arms out to his sides, hands splayed and flames collecting within them.
Here! echoes across the beach and cliffs around them right before the villain slams both arms forward. Flames roar out in a torrent of fire, melting the sand once more as the human flamethrower spews another wave of fire. Crescent-like arcs rush alongside the stream, fanning out in a wide capture the Hunters have to dodge from (one yelling "What the fuck's your problem?!" at Dabi while the ones who've worked with him before are no surprised).
The creature's attention jerks to the side, staring at Izuku through its eye-less face. Right before the fire crashes into it once more, washing over water-familiar flesh and sending it up in a blazing torment. Screams pour through the air as tendrils flail and the feminine figure arches and writhes within the blaze like a witch roasting at the stake.
"Die, and become ash. No one needs you."

Midoriya's reluctance to kill has been called naive. He's been accused of being scared to as well. He's not scared. The terrible thing is that he's prepared to do it if he finds it necessary. When it becomes necessary is a harder question to answer. He's always chosen the more difficult route of life instead of death, living for someone or preserving life for someone. The things he wants are never easy.
"Hey! We're not trying to kill!!" Well, he's technically only speaking for himself and around half the Hunters. "Try aiming from higher up!"
The air almost peels his skin with its heat. Like the other dodging Hunter, Midoriya doesn't want to deal with friendly fire either. Unable to get close to the flames, he switches to another tactic. He leaps out of the shallows and up the cliffs in a zigzag. Digging his feet in, he latches Blackwhip around the Beast's head and attempts to pull to the side to keep it grounded and confused. If it continues on this trajectory towards inhabited areas of the city...

Naivety. Fear. Stubbornness. Pride. Idiocy. It's a factor of any of those and Dabi's seen it in many heroes over his life. There is no concrete "when" to decide that necessity of death; it's determined by each person and the current circumstances. Villains simply have a far easier time of making that determination. It's amazing what you can do when you stop caring so much. Too bad heroes don't care what they leave behind or sacrifice in their aim to make those idealistic fallacies reality.
"'We'?" Dabi glances over his shoulder, eyes narrowed and cold as ice despite the flames roaring across his features. A single-word answer that summarizes every response he needs to make towards Midoirya. He wants higher? That's easily done. The plume of fire abruptly floods with more power, bulging at the base like a flower before erupting upward with an even thicker width and hotter temperatures, rushing towards the beast's head in order to swallow it completely. Sand immediately flash melts into molten glass around its base and hunters nearby are forced to retreat as the heat starts to fry at their skin and clothes.
"DABI!! ARE YOU MAD?!" One of the hunters behind him rages at the back of his head in stunned frustration.
Two things happen at once. A snake of smoke seeps from the seam of Dabi's scarred wrist and he immediately cuts the flames in annoyance, putting a hand over his wrist. Doesn't hurt, of course, but he's not about to wreck himself for this shit. The elation of proving a point overrode his limitation focus for a moment. That's fine. The creature's lower half should be little more than ash by now, nothing left to save even if it could drag its upper half away from the flames.
But when Izuku pulls at its head, the creature---the entire beast---hauls out of the blue bonfire, much to Dabi's annoyance. It hits the ground at the base of the cliff, chittering and bubbling in pain and anger even as what look like petals of carapace begin to unfold from its burned lower half. Clasping like scales around its scorched, smoking flesh, the new emissions begin to fold around it as tentacles curl inward and the creature lowers its head. Tucking into itself, one petal after another wraps and folds, layering the beast inside like a collapsing and building chrysanthemum bloom in reverse. Until finally the entire thing becomes a flower-bud like structure anchored to the side of the cliff face below Midoriya's position.

A grizzled Hunter barks at Dabi, "Get your 'friendly' fire in check or get out!!"
Midoriya bounds down towards the Beast curling into nascence, hanging on the cliff via Blackwhip to get a closer look at its hard shell. There isn't much he can discern through the opaque covering other than what Danger Sense tells him.
"It's still alive!" Needless to say, so he doesn't say it, it's still pissed.
"Well, what are you waiting for?" the Hunter growls. "Someone else to 'Smash' it? Let's kill it then!" At the Hunter's declaration, several others immediately erupt into a chorus of dissent.

One of the other hunters pats the angry one on the shoulder, giving him a sympathetic ear for the growling while Dabi doesn't pay attention. The hunters who've worked with Dabi before know of his tendencies and skills; they knew to clear out when he started up.
What the hell's that kid doing? Hanging up there on the cliff, looking at the carapace-like cocoon wrapped around the creature. "Tsk-" Still alive, Midoriya says. Dabi's lips twitch in a slight curl of annoyance. Of course it's not going to die that easily.
Whether it's in there for protection to wait out the threat or if it's charging up for another offense is the biggest question.
And then the 'fun' moment happens, with one Hunter rallying the cry to kill it and the other section of Hunters denouncing the decision. "They're able to help these beings at the Sanctuary," one of them chimes in. "Unless ya gonna teleport its slimy keister over there, we'd have to escort it the whole way!" another one counters. "But it's someone who can be saved!" a third retorts, echoing Midoriya's sentiment. "It's a creature that's murdered people already!" a fourth snarls.
Idiots. He's not going to stand around arguing. Dabi steps off to the side and heads towards the cocoon.
*ca-chick*
Only to pause when a crossbow-type weapon aims at the back of his head.
*~shing~*
Which begets a sword held to the crossbow owner's throat.
Domino effect through the rest of them. Hmph, so that's how it's going to be. Some stalemate... Flames flicker around the tips of his fingers. Guess he could incinerate them all...

There's no room for infighting. Midoriya learned that more than a year ago during a final exam and witnessed how it can go wrong while testing for his Provisional Hero License. This and the raised weapons make him a touch irritated, as does the ping from Danger Sense.
Midoriya swings down and marches towards the main group now divided in two. He knows Shouto can overheat unless he cools down with his ice, so the smoke off Dabi is concerning. Dabi looks well on his way to getting reprimanded later, but he's not the only one.
"I think we can get a field team over here to de-Beast. I can--"
"There's too little chance of that working, that thing's too huge," a Hunter with a spiked shield interrupts, dismissive of both Deku's age and inexperience. "I don't even know why you want to save it. Hunters have been killing Beasts just fine."
"Maybe if we turned more Beasts back to what they were," grumbles another, "we wouldn't have to fight so many in the first place."
All argument falls silent when the shell shudders against the cliff hard enough to rend a jagged CRACK! in its face.
"Watch out!" comes another preemptive warning from the Hero as his head turns in alarm, indicating the Beast is not just escaping.

Dabi rolls his eyes as he tilts his head up and leers towards Midoriya. What a naive idiot, thinking everyone he sees is going to magically get along thanks to some power of group effort. They're here to hunt the beast and deal with it; the difference isn't from the first part, but the last one. You may not want to accept it, but there's always room for infighting, idiot.
The villain stands his ground where he is, one) because the bolt aimed at the back of his head is still a threat, and two) those who worked with him before know he's capable of unleashing an inferno and likely have no desire to get caught up in it. Relax, kid. The smoke drifting off him isn't from his own flesh just yet. It's burning some of the mess from that creature.
He turns in place as Midoriya approaches, looking at the crossbow in front of his face. Sweeping his gaze and body in a lazy pan across the infighting crowd. Listening to their words and angry counter arguments thrown at each other.
"You can't just walk in here and tell us to change the way we've been doing things for years! We know far more about these creatures and how to deal with them than any of you idiotic Sleepers!" another Hunter rounds, though the anger doesn't seem as shared with the others. Sounds more like a personal issue with that one.
"If we turn them back, they'll just get corrupted again and we'll have to fight them another time," worries a fellow member.
Dabi glances over his shoulder at the "crack!" noise. That's all he needs and he immediately snaps his hand up, knocking the crossbow off to the side and flaring up his fire without warning. Blue flames roar to life, incinerating the crossbow and torching the Hunter's hand in the process.
"Dabi!"
"Urusei. He's lucky I didn't burn the rest of him." Dabi glares at one of his own allies and they fall silent. Before the villain launches himself up into the air with a stream of flames. Not letting anyone else have a chance, he hauls both hands over his head, leaving the rest of them to shield themselves from the raging heat below, and charges up two massive balls of flames. Focusing on the creature's cracking chrysalis, Dabi slams both hands forward. "Jet Burn!"
Burn to ash and go to Hell!
sneakin in one during hiatus | cw: blood and gore
"Why are you burning us?!" he yells with fury, and he doesn't know if the thrumming of One For All in his limbs is going to be directed at the Beast or Dabi. When Dabi gets in the air, Midoriya switches to a third option: rescue. He snatches the injured crossbowman and carries him out of the way.
Jet Burn. It's Endeavor's move. Midoriya would know it anywhere, not only because he's a Hero otaku, but because he interned with Endeavor. Instead of perfectly modulated orange flame, blue shoots out wildly. Considering the steam rising off Dabi earlier, it seems almost like he has a death wish...
Midoriya shields his eyes against the light with an arm, the other occupied with his rescued ally, and there is a great rending THOOM of a noise from the shell. The Beast bursts out, no longer willowy but an absolute unit. Webbed tines now protects the chest and back, and the arms have sprouted clawed fingers. The head has transformed from eerily beautiful to monstrous, snub-nosed and large-jawed, but the rictus grin is the same.
Great jaws chomp the Trenchie who criticized Sleepers just seconds ago, so completely it leaves nothing worth salvaging. Blood drips from its teeth. The Beast plows into the line of Hunters, easily crossing the beach and lashing out with its many tentacles at the same time. Beyond them is the city.
For the first time, Midoriya experiences that feeling of total crisis. He knows of the damage Gigantomachia caused. He can't let something like that happen again. Midoriya sets the Hunter down and bounds after the Beast with no thoughts in his head but this.
oh how lewd~
With the other Hunters diving out of the way and backing off from the flames, a few of them cursing Dabi and others reminding them that's part of the risk of Hunting with Sleepers (and to be fair, the ones who worked with Dabi before *did* try to warn them), Dabi's free to fire, Midoriya should be thanking him he took to the sky and fired downward rather than simply blasting the Jet Burn straight ahead. He's cooled down enough that this burst just barely rises to his safe threshhold, burning him without causing further scarring. But it's the last he can do without another longer cool down. Hence why he resorted to trying to finish the damn thing off in one moves.
He has a death wish. Just not one that can be accomplished here.
Turquoise eyes widen at the sudden eruption. What had once been a relatively man-sized creature was now a towering monstrosity, tendrils crashing through the close waves around it and cracking against the cliff wall it'd taken refuge under. Dabi immediately backs off, dropping to the ground with a burst of flames from his feet to catch himself. He throws an arm up, shielding his face from the sudden clamp of jaws biting a Trench local clean off his feet. Literally. It's coming! Instinct shoves his legs, moving in a quick jump to the side to avoid the rampaging Beast as it rushes through the group. Two of them are far enough away they at least try to hurl long-range weapons it it.
Dabi rolls to his feet, standing on one knee as he watches the creature tear its way towards Trench with angry roars. And there goes the green brat, crackling with lightning and black tendrils. Almost immediately fighting breaks out in the ranks of Hunters, shouting at the ones who resisted the other side's urges to slay the monster in its weaker form. Now, because of their idiocy, they have to deal with an even greater threat! This is what happens when you try to "save" a fucking Beast!
Dabi's left behind as the squabbling group charges after the beast. Climbing to his feet, he watches them chase Midoriya and his quarry. Yeah... have fun with that. He did his part and those idiots opted for the "saving" route. This is no longer his problem. Should've listened to him, huh.
