WELCOME TO THE BLACK PARADE
WHEN: During the daytime every day of October
WHERE: Throughout the streets of Cellar Door and Willful Machine.
CONTENT WARNINGS: N/A

The Black Parade has begun in Trench. You will begin to see residents painting skulls and monsters onto their faces, even the ones who abide by practical lifestyles. By the first week of October, you won't see a single resident of Trench without facepaint or a mask of some kind obscuring their face.

"It's for the Black Parade," they say, "It's to keep us safe. You should start painting your face too. You should disguise yourself so they can't find you."

Who, you might ask? Anyone dangerous. It's vague and unsettling, but you think maybe they are onto something. Call it intuition or basic common sense. Stalls pop up all around Trench selling cheap masks and costumes. They aren't exactly Halloween costumes. There's less of a focus on becoming something and more of a focus on looking different than you currently do.

Then the Black Parade really takes off. Black and white confetti seem to fall from the sky and you can hear the distant sound of trumpets and drums. You can feel the earth give small tremors and Trenchies begin to flock to Cellar Door and the Willful Machine. They line the streets and you can see why: a literal parade is coming through. Stages are set with talented musicians rocking out, singing into wireless, floating moonlit mics. Incredible, giant puppets walk through the streets guided by a dozen talented Architects. Other people move about in stilted costumes, elaborate gowns. Some performers set up small, stationary areas to perform for smaller crowds. The sky is filled with massive and unusual kites. Find one among the many stalls or make your own!

Stalls hand out candied applies, foil-wrapped candies, and roasted pumpkin seeds by the bundles. Hot ciders are kept in barrels ready to be served up in tin mugs, with or without alcohol. It's a festive atmosphere that seems to go nonstop 24/7 throughout October but exclusively in these areas. It's a good place to go to avoid some of the haunts of October and to have a good time. Why not get involved? Make your own puppet, float, or costumes, and join in the fun. Chunks of the road are reserved for parades, but others have been sectioned off for people to dance and mingle about. You quickly learn that face-paint and masked/concealed faces seem to be a good way of avoiding the attention of beasts, angry Pthumerians, and other unusual creatures in Trench.

It's not a foolproof method, but October largely celebrates the safety of ambiguity and is one of the few times the practical and pleasure factions get along. Get your face painted up or pick out a costume - it's both aesthetic and life-saving! The Black Parade is held annually every October all October long and is considered a significant Trench holiday. Many people refer to the costumes specifically as "Black Parade" costumes and sentiments commonly exchanged at this time include: Have a blessed and safe Blood Moon; May your Seasons pass unseen; Bless the many faces of cleverness; May you go unseen by the blood; Blessed Black Parade.

QUICK FACTS

1. Halloween costumes you can buy at the store won't be available unless a character intentionally makes one. Most of the costumes in Trench are more or less eccentric make-up looks and unusual masks. They look a lot more like Cirque du Soleil costumes than Halloween costumes.

2. Characters can have multiple costume/face-paint/mask changes throughout the month. No one will be forced into these - but it is strongly, culturally encouraged for everyone's safety to dress up!
LONELINESS KILLS: THE CURSE OF CLOVERFIELD
WHEN: October
WHERE: Everywhere
CONTENT WARNINGS: Psychological-based curse, feelings of intense loneliness, mental health.

It is said that the Blood Moon reminds Cloverfield of those he has lost over the decades. They say that the howling wind is actually the sound of Cloverfield's cries and there seems to be some truth to that. He can be seen wandering the Farther Shores and watching the moon. If you seek out Cloverfield and offer him comfort and companionship, he will bless you with a worn picture of a loved one or someone you miss desperately or even just a place you miss...Even if it's impossible for such a picture to exist.

Of course, not everyone will visit Cloverfield. Cloverfield's loneliness begins to curse the city of Trench. Sleepers will be impacted the most heavily as their blood will directly react to this curse. Sleepers who have a good sense of relationship may be able to avoid the curse, but those who often feel lonely or homesick will start to feel worse and worse as the days go by.

Eventually, their loneliness begins to manifest as a corpse-like version of themselves or the person they care about most. This corpse follows them around everywhere like a shadow. You won't notice your own Loneliness, but other people might, especially palebloods, Night Walkers, and Disciples. These corpses don't seem to care about anything or anyone and at first don't seem violent...But eventually, this Loneliness becomes consuming.

Once it does, you too will contort, and you and your Loneliness will soon be crawling about on all fours, blood floating out of you in thin streams. You'll be lost to your feelings of loneliness, stalking the streets with your Loneliness, looking for companionship. Of course, you're completely corrupt at this point, so your version of finding companionship most likely involves accidentally suffocating someone or other violent actions. Some people may never become violent once they are in the Final Stage, but the blood constantly flowing from them will create heavy blood pollution and may draw in far more dangerous creatures. You really don't want Lonely People walking around!

Better start some conversations - even if these Lonely People are creepy as hell. But, then again, they are just lonely. Hopefully, you will find peace of mind and find your people. Hopefully, you will banish loneliness...For the time being.

QUICK FACTS

1. This curse will impact people who are more isolated than others. Interaction with other people or animals will alleviate the curse and may completely stop it for some.

2. You can stop the curse at the corpse stage by confronting a Sleeper and opening up an emotional conversation about their loneliness. This may not always work, but the more the conversation works for the Sleeper, the more effective. The corpse will fleck away once the curse has been reversed.

3. Curses can continue to come back throughout October, but once you've experienced it once, it's less likely to occur again.

4. The Final Stage of the curse is the hardest to stop and most of the time, it's easiest to just kill the Cursed. It's easier to kill them than talk them out of their loneliness, but it is not impossible to talk them out of it. It requires dedication, patience, and some serious cleverness on how to survive a monster trying to kill you at the same time.

5. Loneliness can be widely interpreted once in the Final Stage. People should generally still look like themselves. How people act in this stage can vary from character to character and should be centric to how characters deal with their loneliness in general. If they're prone to shutting people out, then maybe their Loneliness is aloof and distant. If they're prone to clinging to toxic people, then maybe their Loneliness is accidentally violent. It's open to interpretation.
LEGENDS OF TRENCH
WHEN: All October
WHERE: Everywhere
CONTENT WARNINGS: Ghosts, Themes of death.

Unfortunately, not everyone can gain control of their loneliness. As blood is spilled throughout Trench over loneliness, this blood pollution festers and begins to claim poor souls. Corruption leads way to beasthood and people lost to this find themselves transforming into familiar, legendary ghost stories of old-world lore. These Legendary Ghosts come out primarily at night. As the Black Parade established, anyone who keeps their faces disguised with make-up or masks will be completely safe from the Legendary Ghosts. Though if you go after a Legendary Ghost in a costume, you'll only be safe until you attack them. It's not a bad move for a sneak attack though!

...But those who forgot to dress up or felt like such superstitions wouldn't work...

Congratulations, you might come across the path of a Dullahan: a headless horseman carrying a whip made from a spinal cord, ready to throw basins of blood on you and draw in other beasts. Or maybe you encounter a far more subtle Legendary Ghost. Maybe you see a hitchhiker on the side of the road and decide to give them a ride, but when you look in your rearview mirror, they are no longer in your backseat. While most of these Legendary Ghosts are intending to harm you and spread more blood pollution, some just seem to be genuinely lost souls, lost to corruption, lost to their own failures and loneliness. In some cases, freeing them is protecting yourself and others, but in other cases, freeing them is just simple kindness.

You may meet a ghost bride who is waiting eternally for her wedding by one of the shrines in Cassandra. Maybe you meet a ghostly scholar at the Archives in Gaze. The spirits range widely and seem to haunt every corner of Trench - including your own homes. The only real way to deter a Legendary Ghost from your home is by heavily decorating your home with things like jack-o-lanterns, fake blood splatters, fake gravestones, and various other death-centric decor. This seems to repel Legendary Ghosts as they see it as a reminder of their own fate. Some are angered by the decorations while others are terrified by them and seem incapable of telling the difference between real blood and fake blood.

QUICK FACTS

1. These corrupt souls can be saved through blood rituals/magic/ghost banishings relying on blood artifacts. This will usually put the soul to rest - it will not bring people "back to life."

2. While it is mostly Trenchies turning into these beings, Sleepers can also be transformed into Legendary Ghosts. We provide a general outline, but the idea is that people are turning into legendary ghost stories so you can play with your own ideas/canons.

While Trenchies cannot be saved, we leave it up to you if a Sleeper could be brought back to themselves or if they will have to "die" to be cured of their Legendary Ghost status.

3. You can use famous Legendary Ghosts from around the world. We gave a few examples, but have fun with this! The Legendary Ghost-like creature you go with should generally be "ghost-like" / have to do with death specifically. They do not need to be exclusively evil/violent spirits, but many are.

You're... [ Invisible. It's not something in itself that surprising, considering she comes from a world where Disillusionment charms are a thing, letting users blend in with their surroundings like some sort of chameleon. But Peter can... now make himself invisible. And that's... just something that is happening right this moment.

She stares widely for a long moment, slowly pulling the compress fully from her forehead, eyes not quite focusing. She's not even quite sure where to look, in all honesty. There's nowhere to look, save for the tin mug she's carrying — a singular object simply hovering in the midst of nothing. Her eyes try to follow upwards, from where his voice seems to come from but who knows what she's looking at. ]

This is... new—? [ She's pretty sure he couldn't do that last month. Or maybe he could and didn't know it—? She's... not quite sure what Darkbloods can do, admittedly. She's not still worked out what she can do, in all honesty. She just... know it's possibly something psychic-related, apparently. ] I'm.. quite glad it's not permanent, but you're... you're sure you're alright—?

[ New-found invisibility abilities feel like they should kind of... trump a migraine. She knows he's worried about her, these headaches are certainly rotten things to go through. But this is certainly a little alarming, and perhaps she should be concerned. But Peter seems... strangely comfortable with it. ]

No, no— it's fine it's just... very strange. [ There's a little more squinting before she rubs at her eyes, her hand rolling to knead at her temple for a moment. ] I'm not sure... where to look.

( It is very strange, and he should probably be much more freaked out by it; Peter's... quite calm acceptance is atypical for him, surely. But it does feel right, the way doing that little ritual had felt "right." As he watches Luna struggle with processing this news, though, he feels a little twist in his gut, because he knows if things were reversed, he would be worried sick about her going invisible... the way he's worried sick about this migraine business of hers. There are still so many uncertainties regarding their new life here, their new blood... and he hates to worry her when she already has so much going on. )

I promise — I'm completely okay. It doesn't hurt or feel weird, or anything like that. It actually... feels pretty nice? Like I'm the ultimate wallflower or something.

( Peter tries to smile again, tries to let it gently show through in his voice, but he's still finding it hard not to fall into his own fretting for the girl who can barely do anything besides lie in pain in bed. He finds her eyes — even if she can't see his in return, Luna looking somewhere a little too far down on his face — and slowly moves closer to the bed, a gentle pressure on her mattress as he sits down on the edge of it. Peter considers for a moment, then— )

I'm gonna take your hand for a second, okay? This one— ( Gently and slowly, he reaches to find it, giving her palm a little squeeze. ) So I can give you the cup. It's cider, it's really good. I thought it might help with your head. You don't have to drink any now if you don't want, though; I can heat it back up for you later. ( Just as carefully, Peter moves the handle of the mug to face her palm, pressing it lightly there so she can take it — whether to set down near her bed or drink now.

Then he's fishing through his pockets to draw out the sweets he'd brought back for her, placing them out on the bed. As they come out of his jacket, they turn visible again— a bag of roasted pumpkin seeds and another bag of candies, as well as a carefully wrapped-up candied apple. )

These are all for you, too — for whenever you feel like you can eat them. Though I can totally make you something else if you want, like actual lunch food or something. Whatever you feel like. ( He adds, going into Nurse Mode here... )

I.. suppose this could prove very useful.

[ Turning invisible is quite handy, really. Even disillusionment charms are flawed; true invisibility is often very difficult to perform magically. There's cloaks but even those can only work so well. And still, Peter doesn't sound worried — she can hear the smile in his voice. It's just... very weird navigating this, watching the edge of the bed dip and seeing nothing there; working out where his face is from memory.

He takes her hand and her eyebrows raise slightly. Slowly, she pushes herself to sit up a little better. It's strange how much it feels the same, even when she can't see it. But then again, why would it not be? She lets him guide her hand, concentrating as best she can on the passing of the mug from his to hers. She manages without too mug fumbling, eyes widening as she brings the mug to herself. It smells amazing and she realises how dry her mouth feels. Having some now would actually be really nice, actually.

The cider still has a good bit of heat in it when she brings the mug to her mouth. There's a small sleepy smile at her lips and she sits nursing the mug in her hands for a few moments. It's a good call, she agrees. ]

This is... really nice. ....I'll have to come with you soon enough and we have some together. [ That'd be nice, wouldn't it? She's sad she's not been able to come with him to the parade. She watches as he starts pulling things out of his pockets, little bags of goodies appearing out seemingly thin air and she watches with a quiet little delight — equal parts amused at the display and touched by the thought. ]

This is lovely, thank you. [ She is absolutely going to have a little spy at the bag of candies, although she's not feeling much hungry. She takes another sip of cider as she looks before shaking her head slightly at the offer of lunch. Oh, Peter. No, you're fine. ] You don't have to do that for me, I'm alright. Really.

[ What's a... skull crushing migraine, after all? Luna sighs softly, still a little tired. At least the worst of it is over, she's just a bit disorientated. What s he feels like is that she could nap a little more, really. Or just... continue to lie in the dark, that'd be nice. ]

Will you stay for a bit? [ She looks at him (or when she... thinks she is) for a long moment before glancing across to the empty space in the bed. After another drink of her cider, she puts the mug on her bedside before carefully adding the treats he'd brought her back with it. She can have them later. But yes, she's inviting him to get into the bed with her; invisible boyfriend is still a boyfriend she can cuddle up with in the dark. ]

Maybe you can just tell me about the parade, what you got up to. I'd like that.

Yeah, like — if there's anything you need me to sneak around and do, I'm your guy.

( Peter's half joking, but also... he does mean it. It could be useful, especially with all the uncertainties still surrounding their new environment. Really, they've hardly had a chance to settle down, with this place already offering challenges. Though at least not being flooded with blood gushing out of the walls and down the streets is... a nice change. But if he could use this invisibility to help somehow? He'll do it.

Peter smiles a little sadly to himself as he watches the girl take a sip of the cider. He hates that she has to miss out, especially considering how much he thinks Luna would enjoy the festivities. When he's there without her, he's constantly worrying, too. He just... hopes she will feel better, soon. She has to, right? This can't last forever.... or will it shift into something even worse? He doesn't know, but he tries to ease that heavy worry out of his voice as much as possible, tries to at least sound a little bit hopeful. )
Once we get you feeling better, I'll definitely take you. We can go as much as you want.

( He knew she'd approve of The Sweets, though it's also very evident how tired Luna is, by the fact she doesn't immediately dive in. Peter worries his bottom lip, juggling the decision to ask if she's sure she doesn't want him to make her anything, he really doesn't mind (he's a fretful nurse, but certainly not a pushy one) when Luna asks him if he'll stay for a bit. The glance over to the spot beside her says exactly what it needs to say without using words, and his heart clenches up a little bit. There's some random memory that flickers in him of when he was younger and sick with a fever or something, and that desire to have someone close. And of course he well knows that feeling even now; there's been many times he feels... bad, and having Luna nearby... helps. He's not as used to it being the opposite, and it makes his heart both hurt and feel a fondness for her, and he's nodding before he realises she can't see him. )

Course I will. Let me just— ( There's some movement against her bed as he finagles out of his jacket and..... lets it drop on the floor (Peter....) before he's carefully crawling up to the space beside her. It's... maybe slightly creepy, covers peeling back on their own, the boy getting comfortable there as he sits up in bed beside her. And how he offers an arm, slipping it up behind her head so she can tuck in close if she wants — something she'll only... feel instead of be able to see coming. Cuddling while invisible is... kind of awkward, he's now realising! Luna can probably hear the wince in his voice. )

—Sorry. Is this weird?

Oh, very much like that, yes! You could be very stealthy. [ Which is something that would be very much needed in a place like Trench. They might not have been here all that long, but there's the distinct impression from the natives that the city is dangerous. Being stealthy around this place would be very much needed, sometimes. And well, if it keeps Peter safe, too? That's always an added bonus. ]

I'd really like that. You can be my parade guide. [ Her parade expert, since he's already seen what's gone on. She's quick to assure him, to bolster that hopefulness in his voice that's there under all the worry. She'll be alright, it won't go on forever. It couldn't possibly.

It's admittedly a bit weird, watching it all unfold — things moving and seeing no one there. And there's a bit of awkwardness in it all, trying to navigate what he's doing when she can't very well see him doing it — his arm bumping against her. But Luna doesn't mind, it's probably one of the least strangest of things to be happening, in all honesty.

She lets out a little exhale of breath, a soft sound of amusement in it before she turns around and curls into him. There's little time spent getting comfortable as she cuddles into him, closing her eyes to help feel her way — it's just like it is in the middle of the night, half-awake shifting in the pitch black to curl up a little closer. ]

Mm, it's alright. [ She really doesn't mind, even if it's a little odd. She wrinkles her nose with a small smile, her eyes remaining closed before she tucks in her head in close. ] In fact, if I close my eyes it just feels exactly as it should do. Besides, at least this way I'm not staring at your ear or your chin.

[ She promises not to immediately fall asleep, as comfy as she is. There's a long, deep breath, quite content; fingers curling in the fabric of his shirt, gently toying with it for a long moment before she asks: ]

So what did you do at the parade?

( He will very happily be Luna's parade guide, if.... when the time comes. There's so much he wants to show her, that he thinks she'd enjoy, and Luna absolutely deserves to have a nice time after what she's going through now..... Until then, Peter will just have to keep bringing her any new sweets he hears about.

He's really hoping this isn't weirding her out too much, relieved when she says it isn't, but he also knows how Luna can swallow down her own discomforts for his sake — she's soft with him, he knows this.

And honestly?? If this were reversed, it would be weird for him. So he's not entirely convinced that she's not a little bit creeped out or otherwise discomforted by all of this, and he's frowning a little to himself as he looks up at the ceiling and settles in with Luna curled up beside him like that in the darkness of the room. Making a vow to be especially soft with her, too. )

Let's see... I told you already how everyone's wearing facepaint or masks or something, right? I didn't have to do that this time, since I was.... invisible. ( He's so good at making things sound interesting. Really. )

I watched the parade for awhile, but it's kind of a lot? So then I went off to watch the kites. They're really cool — people fly these huge ones? Like of big ole dragons and stuff.

( As he's talking, Peter's brushing his fingers gently up and down her shoulder, affectionately. Of course, he's always quite affectionate with Luna, but this time he has every intention to pamper her even more... his poor sick girl.... And so after a moment, Peter's just going to gently brush his cheek against the top of her head — yes... he is nuzzling her. Peter Graham has never nuzzled anyone in his life. The invisible boy is being very mushy. )

Mostly I was just missing you, though. I kept seeing stuff I knew you'd like.

( The nuzzles continue until he's just pressing his nose into her hair. Being cute on purpose and just gently loving on her.... She deserves it, okay. )
