Does-- Try to carry a real medicine, if you can. If not, at least make it the purest alcohol you can find.
[No swill, swill won't help anybody, actually might make it worse. No fruity drinks or mystery beers from the Earworm, please. There's Stuff in those.]
Patting is good; don't want to pull the skin and further. [An approving nod, curt, and he leans forward some to peer at Rio's completely fine arm to hum over the cut that isn't there. Hmm, what does it look like...] A clean incision, not too deep, but it's a few inches long. Probably from a knife.
[noted into her omni: patting is good. purest alcohol available.
getting a second canteen - not the limited edition purifying kind that came with the welcome bags - but something to carry antiseptic in: now a priority.]
Well, you said it's clean, so I don't have to pick anything out of it. I guess that means it doesn't need stitches. Not deep enough? So...
[hmmms over the table, holding up a roll of bandage after a moment. she's not sure if it should be bandaged or if there's something better than that but not stitches.]
[tweezers going into the notes. also upcoming: the yellow ointment.]
Maybe douse my fingers in medicine, too, if I don't have tweezers?
[bandage down and ...yellow one...yellow....ah, there. good. she turns the container around in her hands, sniffs it because that's just what you do - and pantomimes the careful transfer to her fingers and then to rio's arm, which at this point, she is just petting.]
So what you're saying is I need a better kit. [that's fair. she basically has no kit besides her canteen and her blood.] You're probably the best person I can think of to ask, so, about that wrist sprain? It's probably hurting her, and she skin isn't broken there, so is it safe to rub some of my blood on it?
That's an idea. And yes, a better kit would serve all of us better. It took me a while to find all the best bits and pieces for one.
[He's a necromancer, he doesn't normally carry around... normal medical supplies for ordinary people. A little flesh magic goes a long way, but here - well, obviously not. And the blood pollution kind of puts a damper on many of his usual strategies...
Anyway, speaking of blood. Hmm.]
A numbing agent? You could. You already know to be very, very careful that you're not dripping anywhere near an open cut or orifice, for the obvious reason. Maybe apply the blood to a cloth first, for better control.
Of course, then you have your own cuts to take care of.
[oh, the trials and tribulations (and temptations) of having vileblood.]
Yeah. Yeah, believe me, I know. I could do it with a needle, or ...I could bite the inside of my lip. That's how I figured it out in the first place. But probably better to carry something else, too.
Maybe some of the black cloth? For the ointment, and the medicine. [but. gotta stay focused on the arm "wound". he will instruct her on the sprain later.] Is there a black tape? Close it up without stitches and keep corruption out?
[palamedes is a good teacher. she didn't expect less, but it's been a long time since anyone really taught her something. besides fighting. this is a completely new feeling. it's ...weird, but she doesn't hate it. at all.]
[There's saliva involved in that, please. They need only mix so many fluids.
He sits up from slouching on Rio to rise and look over the table, picking up a little box and giving it a cheerful shake. It jingles.]
You want to put tape on a wound? Directly? [is that what he is to assume... holds out the box, which contains a bunch of hooks, the kind that hold cloth bandages closed.] Can't go wrong with the classics. If nothing else, we have bandages a-plenty to pass out.
[she's getting the feeling that that's not correct. yeah, probably not. whoops.]
Do you mind if I take some with me after? To start my kit. [she's fishing out a few hooks, turning them over in her hands - straightforward enough - and grabs the bandage roll, unwinds it, stops. backpedals to the table to find the scissors to cut it with, and proceeds to wrap it carefully. that, at least she has a lot of transferable skill. hooks in place and done.]
Adhesive on open wounds is generally a bad idea, yes. You could use tape to hold the bandage down, but the hooks are multi-use, comparatively.
[He gestures for her in the affirmative; yes, she can have the supplies she needs to make a kit. There wouldn't be a point in teaching her these tips and tricks and then telling her to go scrounge up supplies on her own.
Anyway, as he crouches down to observe her bandaging skills, Rio's tail thumps gleefully at more attention. She's loving it, she did great, oh!! Treats for Rio??]
Well, look at that; you did well, too. Hang on, let me get something for Rio real quick—
[It's apple slices, he's got a little baggie sitting aside here for her to enjoy the crunch.]
[Vi, please, these are Rio's treats. Palamedes looks from her to Rio, eyebrows raised, and after a moment Rio trills and nudges his elbow with her big head, so- okay.]
Our patient thinks you earned one of her treats, so sure.
[vi will gently take a slice, and take a moment to acknowledge the dynamic here.]
Thank you, Rio.
[and a quick look of 'thank you palamedes']
Now about that wrist. I'm afraid I don't know what to do besides numb it, and maybe something ...cold?
[pain is weird. heat helps some things, cold helps some others. but she's never really thought about which is which, and it's been a long time since anyone gave her the choice of either, so she's only been left to suck it up, deal with it and wait. which is not a great option.]
[Rio, thanked, thumps her tail appreciatively for Vi, and then settles down to crunch on the apple slices after Palamedes shakes them out of the bag for her. He gives Vi a quick quirk of a smile, you're welcome, and gestures at the table as he sticks the empty apple baggie in his pocket.]
Cold numbs; heat soothes. Heat boosts bloodflow and cold slows it down, which is why generally speaking, heat works wonders on a stiff muscle or a cramp, and cold works better in the short-term— for something like this. Good call. You never really want to use heat on a sprain that's less than a day old. Or on something that might still want to bleed, because of the blood boost.
Or, short version: cold for now, heat for later.
[And he wiggles his fingers over the supply spread for a moment, searching, then picks up a splint, which in this case is a flat length of metal with a curve at the end for the heel of the hand to sit in. Rio doesn't have hands, so just imagine this would fit.]
It's not comfortable, but just like with the planks: we don't want a sprain to move overmuch.
[it's repeated into her omni in a more shorthand manner - though it's done through a smile as she watches rio joyfully enjoy her reward.]
I don't know if I could fit that into a portable kit, but branches and bandages in a pinch, or ...a table leg. [slightly flatly:] That's one of the ones you just wait out.
Do you have portable hot and cold stuff?
[she has no idea what exists here in the "more science than magic" realm. not really the magic either, but it's easier to simplify that to "poof cold" or "poof hot".]
[Sure, go for a table leg. And he shakes his head, no, there aren't too many things he's found that hold temperature that long without having to be kept in something else to carry around. Unless...]
Something with coldblood in it could be enchanted to heat up or cool down, maybe? We're sorely lacking in coldbloods around here, but I'll ask around. If a weapon can be enchanted, surely a splint like this one could be enchanted the same way.
[He taps said splint against his palm, like, surely? They can work on that.]
Of course, the heating or cooling isn't the first priority, if you can't find anything for a kit.
[It's not not a terrible idea, but this isn't punching class, it's first aid class. Palamedes presses the curved side of the splint into his cheek, frowning thoughtfully.]
No, don't do that? [He holds a hand up; wait,] I'm not going to lecture you about cyclical revenge or anything that trite, so just think of it as a waste of ice and other resources.
[if it were punching class, vi might be teaching it. she almost frowns until he says waste of ice and laughs instead because ...yeah. no ice for you, imagined perpetrator of violence against what might the the cutest omen in trench.]
Look after Rio, I should think. Look at her, she's very upset, her arm hurts very much.
[You know, in the scenario (tm), complete with Palamedes crouching back down to squish her big, silly face, which she is just tail thumping at mach speed over. Anyway, the point stands—]
Emotional support; your patient needs you more than they need you to hurt someone.
[that hits. it hits hard and ...she knows this one. it's just been a long time. it's starting to come to her here, but it hasn't been an option for an age - there's been no one to give it to.
a little graze of her knuckles against rio's "cheek".]
I'm proud of you for being so brave, Rio. You did really good. And you're gonna be okay, you'll heal up just fine---
---you've got this. We've got this. If you wanna rest, I can sit watch.
[for a moment there, she'd nearly forgotten who she's talking to. blinks. wiped the dust from the corner of her eye. damn sanctuary dust. who put that in the air?]
[Ah; there's something in there Palamedes isn't privy to, something in the way the, hm, dust gets in her eyes— He looks away politely, fiddling with the splint some more like it needs his attention for a few more moments. It's alright; whatever thing she needs to process, he won't pry.
Rio is still having a great time, trilling warmly and pressing her face into Vi's hand. Empathetically? Who knows, Rio is a mysterious creature.]
—That's good. You've done well, for a first lesson. Do you have any questions?
[Rio is very appreciative, still; Palamedes slides her another apple slice and then leans against her side. Comfy...]
Whenever you want, and you don't owe me anything. We have a more limited supply here than the Lumenarium, although some people find Lumenwood off-putting. [The gross blood mist, and etc.] But I'm there in the mornings, so come around and ask for me; the other blood ministers won't bother you.
[They do whatever he says, basically. It's fine.]
There's also the blood bank, although, obviously - they have a different priority. If you're only looking for basic things like bandages, I'm sure any general store you come across should have a decent enough stock.
The school might be another option; the one in Gaze. Assuming they have practical classes.
[she'll nod in agreement and later leave a paper frog with a cookie in its mouth. he can take or leave the cookie, but it's a good one. the frog is a bit more carefully folded than her previous attempts.
after a very careful pause, vi leans against rio's other side - it's only for a moment, gives a gentle nuzzle as the omen chews.]
Lumenwood's not my favorite place, but I don't hate it. I'm fine with going there. I hadn't though about the bank, but yeah. We get ink from there, at Ursula's. That's something I'd like to learn, though. How to make the ink. I'm not really sure it's something I'll even understand, but I can give it a shot, I guess? And I'll ask about the ...practical classes.
You're really good at this. [she isn't surprised by it - but she's trying to get better about speaking her feelings. thankfully, this month and it's ocean artifacts have her back on that one. maybe too much.] You, too, Rio. I guess we all did well.
