WHERE: The Ocean
CONTENT WARNINGS: Deep diving, possible drowning, possible death
Early on in the month, the waves start to have a strange look to them. They seem a little brighter, even at night, and it's then that it hits you: the waves are glowing. It's easy to at first to brush it off as the bioluminescence of certain types of plankton, but the way it moves and sparkles has an other-worldly quality to it that can't be explained by science. Those who look even closer at the glow will notice that it seems to be forming some sort of path into the watery depths.
Those who choose to follow the path despite the angry waves and awful storms that plague the seas this month will find that the ocean seems to be at its calmest along these illuminated, watery roads. Diving down to follow them won't require any equipment, as Sleepers will find that staying within the glowing path allows them to breathe under water when they might normally not have been able to. The pressure changes don't seem to be impacting anyone who follows the light either, allowing them access to deeper depths of the ocean than may have previously been explored.
Continuing to follow the path will lead Sleepers to a series of ship wrecks under the water. These ancient vessels are rotted and covered in seaweed, but anyone who is familiar with the cultures of Earth will notice that they seem to come from all over the world and their styles vary by multiple centuries. But all the ships seem to be covered in this same, strange glow that has brought people here.
Exploring the ships will lead to multiple different discoveries. There are chests filled with ancient artifacts: carvings of squids, statues of various sea creatures that feel a little off somehow, and stones carved with a strange text that is almost impossible to decipher. The artifacts are covered in strange, rust-looking stains that penetrate deep into the materials they're made of. These artifacts can be brought back to shore, and if someone were to try and ask the Trenchies what the writing said, they would only be able to say that these are clearly texts of the Old Ones from long before any recorded history that Trench has in its Archives. When asked about the sea creatures, they'll think it's obvious: these are Mariana's various forms from over the years. The off qualities are her unique takes as a Pthumerian on the creatures of the ocean.
Prolonged exposure to these statues of Mariana will cause people to become more bluntly honest, more open with their emotions, and often much more prone to large outbursts from said emotions, both good and bad. However, Sleepers who keep these statues near them will also find that they are able to keep more control of their blood powers. It's up to each individual if it's a worthy trade off.
If you leave the path, two things can happen: Sleepers will either turn into their squid selves and can continue to swim or they will drown. There will be nothing of interest outside of these paths, just typical ocean creatures, and maybe some of those monsters that have been crawling out of the watery depths as of late.

CONTENT WARNINGS: Body horror, mentions of potential cannibalism/vore, possible death, contagious curse
Soon after people start to explore the ships, a strange occurrence will start to sweep through the city. Locals start to mutter something about a curse, one that seems to only be impacting Sleepers. The early signs that there's something off is an increase in strength and stamina. For example, Sleepers will find that they might go to pick up a chair or a mug and it shatters in their hands. Some people may find that they are incapable of sleeping. Others might find they're able to move quicker and for longer periods than normal.
If they look themselves over, they will start to find small patches of skin that have started to gray and blacken. These patches will be cracked, almost scaley, and will be consistently damp no matter how hard you try to dry them off. As time passes, this odd rash will start to spread, taking over more and more of the body. The torso might start to swell and distort, making Sleepers feel particularly top heavy. And eventually, suckers will start to form on the arms and legs.
This curse isn't beasthood in its usual forms; instead, it seems to be some sort of malady in of the magical blood that Sleepers have been granted. If the blood of an infected Sleeper is looked at under a microscope, there will be black patches clinging to the cells, similar to the patches that people see on their skin. If it isn't stopped, the person suffering from the curse will ultimately turn into a monstrous form of their squid-selves: these monster forms are large, aggressive, and able to move on land. They will feel a hunger for destruction and some Sleepers may find in these forms that they are only satisfied if they feed on other, uncursed Sleepers.
There are two ways to lift the curse. One is through a thorough blood transfusion with a blood type that is compatible with your own. This becomes more difficult to do the closer to the monstrous form people get, both due to aggression from the curse, and also due to the fact that the black patches of skin are highly difficult to puncture. Once the blood is completely replaced by fresh blood, the skin patches will disappear over 48 hours and the Sleeper will be left feeling thoroughly exhausted.
The second way to lift the curse is through death. While these monster squid forms are difficult to kill, it is not impossible, and they are particularly susceptible to magic over weapons. Once a Sleeper has died, they can be reborn, and their blood will be completely free of the curse.
The blood malady can be spread outside of those who come into contact with the ship wrecks. People who touch a cursed Sleeper, particularly the scaley patches of skin, will also run the risk of being cursed. It takes roughly a week for the signs of the curse to show, and can spread as slowly or as rapidly as players choose.

The high waves seem to just be getting higher at the beginning of the month. Rougher and rougher seas start to cause something anyone who's lived around water will be familiar with: flash floods. These floods are large, powerful, and fill the streets of Trench. First-floors of buildings may get extreme damage, though they can be protected with physical and magical barriers if people are smart about it. The floods happen multiple times throughout the month without warning, so it may be good to get that protection built up sooner rather than later.
The after effects of these floods aren't just structural devastation though. People who get caught up in the water, particularly those who end up swallowing it, will have one word echoing in their mind on a regular basis: More.
More of what? That seems to be different for each individual. Maybe one person wants more and more food, anything from an extra slice of cake after dinner, to wanting to stuff themselves until they just might pop. Or maybe they want to hoard all of their favorite objects or pieces of clothing, filling more and more of the space in their homes until they're ready to burst at the seems. Some might find it's their emotions that come in excess, with over the top anger, or irregular excitement that leaves them unable to sleep for days. Anything and everything can come in excess and it certainly seems to be this month. Some people may get these obsessive needs to such a degree that they start to feel disconnected from themselves, fractured by the overabundance that has taken over their lives.
If people ignore these desires, they'll start to find they're plagued by hallucinations. Strong, life-like visions that riddle them with anxiety and leave them petrified of what might happen if they don't partake in this gluttonous behavior. They'll feel shaken to the core and slowly go mad with need and desire for whatever it is they've been craving. This feeling of madness can make them become violent, lashing out at those around them, even killing those who try and help them out of belief that they're trying to force them to give in to their vices.
The impact of the water will wear off either after one week without re-exposure, or by using a Moon Drop to help to cleanse the mind.

It looks down at the instrument in MediaTarget's lap. That could be a violin. "Would you play that—" it looks around them. "The acoustics are terrible here. I would like to hear you play somewhere else." It has well soundproofed rooms, but even its monitoring systems catch how poorly that would go over. It would consider that a high risk issue the other way around. It looks expectantly just to the side of ViolinTarget's face.
no subject
That case is indeed very violin-shaped, and she opens her mouth when the other nearly asks her to play. It changes to say something else. Also, it would amuse her to know she's gone from MediaTarget to ViolinTarget so quickly. "Sure, why are you so interested in all those other things, though?"
Merely asked out of curiosity. Sharing her music is why she plays, after all.

It wants the music, it wants it, needs it, so badly. Murderbot is used to wanting things and not getting them. It's not going to shake the kid like that'll dislodge the music. It wouldn't even work. I want them, it doesn't say, immediately. That opens too many questions.
"I'm gathering databases of media for people to enjoy," it answers. It's a people. It's included in the statement inherently. "Supposed to fight corruption." Who knew watching media was such a healthy choice? (It could have told people). It stands mostly still, only the act-like-a-human coding making its arms a little restless, its weight shifting, irregularities in its breathing. The kind of things that feel wrong, on some level, to humans when they're missing.
no subject
There's a smile when the other answers why those particular questions were asked. "That sounds nice. I don't believe there's anything like it here. Other than whatever people can think of and the Archives." Those books may be more of a non-fiction collection, intended to inform them all. "I have an anthology of poems that we could copy and add to your database, if that would help too."
On top of playing music and whatever movies, shows, and other music she can think of. She does notice that the other individual isn't quite normal, but none of that bothers her. The multiverse was a big place.
no subject
"The poems would also help," Murderbot answers. "People prefer different forms of entertainment. There should be something for everyone." Even, ugh, in the romance/sex category sooooooo many people have material for. People do like it, weirdly enough.
"What media do you prefer?" it asks. If the girl is going to supply other people with media, it's fair to keep an active query on her interests.
no subject
"I love poems." So a collection would really be nice for her. "They do and could probably use more of it in this place." Romance she can do, but will avoid the sex category.
"Poetry, music, old films, non-fiction, and documentaries. Mostly animal and historic documentaries." Yep, definitely an odd kid with those interests.
no subject
"Old. Historic," Murderbot says with a questioning note. "It's hard to know what that is for Sleepers. Is there a time range or cut off?" How old is old? When do events change from news to history? "I'd like to obtain them for you but need more information."
no subject
"Hm, I guess that's true." She puts a hand to her chin thoughtfully. "For me, there isn't really a cut off. I even like movies that are black and white because the technology wasn't advanced enough for color. Color became popular in the 1940s and 1950s." Both hands go behind her back and she rocks on her feet. "For historic documentaries, that's like ancient civilizations. Ones that archeologists are uncovering with discoveries. Though, with all the worlds here, historic could mean even people from the future. It'd be interesting to see what they thought of my time."
no subject
"I will check for black and white film, and I will aim for a difference of at least a thousand years between archeologists and subject matter," Murderbot gives its word. It knows little about archeology except for what's in the media. It doubts even the documentaries give the true picture. That's not the point, though. This isn't a university. It's a way to have fun.
"Are there any titles you would really like to see?" Murderbot asks, "You've been helpful." She will even be more helpful with recordings of her music. That's a rare gift for Murderbot, especially in a room with good acoustics.
no subject
"Thank you. I could also provide you with what I already have seen in case others would be interested in it." She does like watching documentaries, not for accurate information but because it's fun to her. Saturn enjoyed seeing what would come up from the ruins.
"Hm, Casablanca, Roman Holiday, Dracula, His Girl Friday, An American in Paris," she replies. "I'm glad I have." Hotaru knows she's small and people view her as a child, but anywhere she can help with something, she'll be glad to.
no subject
"Any information about them, content warnings, moods, that isn't readily available in metadata would be appreciated," it says, "if you have it. You don't have to do a lot of extra work. I find it useful for myself when I do it."
Standing there, Murderbot searches for the named films and tags them for itself for later. Sorting through media is soothing work. That's for later. This isn't a soothing time. "I'll get them," it says. "For the music, you can come by The Entertainment Feed anytime. In Cellar Door." It isn't so nonsensical as to try to get a stranger to follow it to a secure location they don't know.
It hopes no one would say yes to that.
no subject
"I'll do my best when I provide you with it." Since that doesn't seem like a now sort of thing, but as she's giving the media over with labels. "I can at least classify them by genre."
Hotaru nods her head at that. It wasn't her intent to go now, and she might see if Usagi wants to accompany her on the first trip. Not that she's worried about someone trying to hurt her, she'd transform first. "Are you already open, or still in the process of stocking up?"
no subject
It shrugs. "If someone wants something I don't have, I'll try to get it." If it's in Trench, it'll get it. If it's not, nothing Murderbot can do about it.
"It also has a recording setup," it says. See this is a natural part of the conversation. "It can record your music at higher quality than—" It motions around them. Hopefully that is a good thing and not... scary. Soundproofing.
no subject
She hums thoughtfully. "Have you thought about making your own movies or shows. It's a little more work, but there might be someone who wants to be a star among the people."
This would be a nice activity to fill her days, whenever she wasn't helping Usagi or Makoto with their jobs. Maybe her music will help someone.
no subject
"Hmmm," it says to the suggestion. It's never thought of that before. It's a definite way to increase the amount of media it has access to. However, given how much media is out there, it might reduce the amount of new media it sees, sorts, etc. "Maybe once I'm more established. It needs a lot more people."
"I'm Rin," it says, "You can reach me in Cellar Door at The Entertainment Feed. It has a large astronomical clock on its front. You can also reach me on the network at the username ~rin."
no subject
Hotaru nods her head at the response. She doesn't know how long The Entertainment Feed has been open, whether it's new and hence why Rin is gathering all sorts of media, or simply approached because of the clear music player. "I wouldn't mind helping in some way."
Whether that's bringing the music or helping with anything on stage. Acting isn't something she's interested in, but it sounds like a fun to help.
"Hotaru Tomoe, username firefly. I live in Cellar Door, too, so it shouldn't be far away at all." A giant pink house can be hard to miss.
no subject
Huh. Perhaps a play? Those are already written, and Murderbot doesn't know the odds on a halfway indecent writer or better washing up on the beach. Trench doesn't give off big entertainment making vibes. Too much damage and focus on survival. "I'll keep that in mind," it says.
"Not that surprising," Murderbot comments. Hotaru is a musician, and Cellar Door contains almost everything related to entertainment. Though, that includes activities Murderbot has no interest in. It's not that different from the Corporation Rim, just... planetbound.
"I'll see you around," it says.
no subject
"I suppose not," she hums at that. Technically, Usagi lived in Cellar Door long before Hotaru got here. Maybe it was due to the connection between her and the musical people in her life. Or maybe not.
"See you soon." Hotaru waves, before shifting to pack her belongings up.
