Yeah, I know these guys! [ A fact that brightens Robby right up, rings in his voice. ] They're Brazillian? I had no idea. Yeah, these guys are good; got some misses, but you should check them out.
[ But finally, finally-- and with a chucke on his breath- ]
--but you know, I don't think sharing music's going to get us that bracelet. [ Even if Robby's in a good mood now. Hey!! The music was worth it! Robby gestures towards Shoyo. ]
We're supposed to learn about each other, right? Why don't you start? What took you to Brazil?
[ Because that sounds possibly way more interesting than what Robby can share. ]

Training! I was planning for it since my second year in high school. After I graduated, I flew to Rio to work with a coach's friend.
I wanted to go pro in indoor volleyball, but I knew I wouldn't get drafted with the skills I had. So I trained for three years there with pro beach volleyball players.

[ Makes sense, that one exists. Like any other sport has an audience for it, though volleyball has always been destined to the school gyms or beaches to Robby. But it's probably in the same way that he would've never cared about karate to give it two thoughts, if something of it didn't linger in his life.
And even then, he dodged it for sixteen years. ]
What's it like? The difference. [ It's not a randomly plucked question; it's actually one of interest. Coming from one guy who did a switch, but not as drastic as to go to another country. ]

So the sand, the weather? It works against you all the time. the floor gives way to your weight and could be a real bad guy if you’re trying to jump, or get a good dig in. You can’t get a secure kick, y’know? So you have to jump harder to compensate. And the wind— your partner could set up the perfect toss, but if the wind decides to blow, you could miss your mark.
[ the rules are also different, but he won’t get into that. ]
Beach Volleyball only plays with doubles, too, so all of two people need to know how to play every traditional position for coverage. When you go back to indoor volleyball . . .
[ he doesn’t like to brag, but he’ll be real. ]
My jump was crazy high. [ he’s short, so crazy high!!!! ] I could let my teammates depend on me when I was on defense, too— I learned how to receive, and that was my worst skill in school.

And what else could a guy do but to grin, nod at Shoyo and ask, ]
You gotten rusty being here? I'd like to see it - a jump. [ He'll even take some of a step back, the sliver of a challenge in his otherwise courteous: ] If you're up for it.
[ But come on -- show off. Robby wants to see the fruits of Shoyo's labour. ]

Hell no, I train and lift everyday! Can't afford to get rusty when that's your life! Say, how tall are you?
[ he's starting to bounce on his toes. he's not exactly warmed up for the task, but he thinks he could still jump pretty high on demand. ]

[ 'Higher up', 'on a good day'; a 5'07 is a 5'07 and Robby knows it, but his delivery gives it its joke. One shorty to another, king. He puts his hands on his upper thighs, can't help but give his legs a little shake and share- ]
I had to do jumping jacks, and single-leg deadlifts? Depth jumps?
[ They're shared, but asked like a question. Sound familiar? Because maybe this guy also knows a few things about jumping too -- just not in the context of volleyball. ]

Single Leg Bounds, Split Squat Jumps, [ he adds to robby’s list— and so on! ] I could jump you.

[ And that last one is a finger pointing behind him. Over him. No springboard necessary. ]
