[He stands up on shaky legs and despite knowing that he should have outgrown this a long time ago he tucks his head against Obi-Wan's neck and wraps his arms around the other man.]

I don't want to be him.

[ obi-wan rubs his back quietly. ]

But I could be.

[jedies]

But that's up to you, Anakin. And no one else.

[He tightens his grip and his words are slightly muffled as he keeps his face buried.]

It's been so long and nothing's changed.

[He's still the same person he was a year ago.]

[jedies]

That still doesn't mean you can't change. I don't care how long it takes.

[facultative]

I don't even know where to start.

[No matter how long Obi-Wan was willing to wait, they didn't actually have forever.]

Start by looking at your motivations.

[facultative]

It doesn't make sense though.

[He takes a moment to figure out how he wants to word this.]

[What did he have to live for?]

And no one is asking you to.

But you also can't control other people just because you don't want to be alone.

[facultative]

[Quietly.] I know.

But if I pushed you away and Padmé's... I would rather die. That's why I don't understand why I kept going.

[And how could he avoid it if he didn't know himself?]

[ obi-wan absorbs that quietly. ]

[Anakin doesn't say anything, no apologies would ever be enough. He stills instead, holding his breath for whatever comes next.]

And it took me a long time to come to terms with that grief.

But I learned that there is light in unexpected places. People, even strangers, who will take the time to care, if you let them.

And I will continue to carry the memory of those who are gone.

[His grip tightens.]
