the soundtrack to her life...
She doesn't actually understand all of what she's been told, but for the most part she's gathered that the latest threats in Trench are meant to be...festive beings? Cheerful? She doesn't see it. The very notion seems ridiculous to her, and ridiculousness stokes irritation.
That's one reason she takes immediate action when a shout catches her attention and she spots a fat man swathed in red menacing someone she doesn't know. Also because she doesn't particularly want to see someone murdered right in front of her, accustomed as she is to violence.
It's a good thing she has her sword.]
Leave him be!
[And she charges.]
oh also general blanket warning for creepy monster and maybe gore!
the santa has no trouble twisting his head in a disturbing angle, letting go of viktor to meet maria's charge head on, alarmingly quick and trying to claw at her now with jagged, bony hands. viktor falls to the ground with a wheeze, cane already clattered nearby.
it's this he takes to try and trip up the creature with a jab at it's legs. it might even give maria a better opening.]

The man — thing — man/thing is quick, though, and moves swiftly enough to prevent her from striking it down outright. Its target is a sensible man, it seems, and his impromptu kicking attack sets the thing off balance enough that she's able to swing again and send her sword slicing through its ribs.
That...is usually when a man drops dead, if he has no armor. This one doesn't, and yet it still lives. Or something.]

It didn't even slow. [more muttered to himself, and now he's trying to figure out what the hell either of them can do as the santa very much tries to bite her.]

I noticed.
[She blocks the lunge with the flat of her blade, nonetheless rocking on one heel as it forces her back. She's tall for a woman, but the thing is strong.]
What did you do to make it angry?

Try to get some distance, I'm going to try to hit it with something that could hit you if you're too close.

[She half-mutters it, more annoyed that the lack of any real reason means there's nothing to exploit than she is by the fact that it attacked at all. If there's nothing but madness and violence here, she'll accept it and deal with the situation as it is.]
I'm not exactly a distance fighter, but fine!
[She's been standing up against the things blows, but all of a sudden she darts to the side, catching it off guard, and giving her the chance to sprint away. It wouldn't be fast enough to take her to safety on her own, but she can be fast when she needs to be, and this gives her impromptu partner the opportunity he needs.]
