Whatever Lazarus has told you is probably unflattering but true.
[ Still, he regards Light for a moment, before he settles on: ]
Everyone knows we have enemies. We're fighting the whole of the universe for the same reasons any war has ever been fought. Space, resources... religious differences. [ This last with a flash of dry humor, like it's a joke. ]
But we're also fighting it because of a score to settle, and I'm the only one left who remembers that bit. I made a promise, you know? I swore vengeance. You can't just give up a good oath of vengeance.
[ Here it is again, the undercutting weariness: he says it like a joke, but there's an underlying fragility. This bit is personal. ]

[ It's good to establish a common ground. Light has no doubt that John will share the frustration that comes with trying to get direct answers from L. While the intelligence behind it is his favorite part of their relationship, that doesn't mean it doesn't have drawbacks. ]
So I've been trying to figure it out based on what I know about him. I know you're smart. Whatever you did to earn the label of 'monster' wasn't the kind of thing you'd read about in a daily newspaper. It was impressive. You're tired. Whatever Lazarus did made you even more tired. It shows now.
Now you know what the 'whatever' is.
[ It seemed like a relatively fair trade for allowing John to go first. To Light's knowledge, it's more than the other man knows about him. ]
I'll skip the lecture on why it's a bad idea to let vengeance guide you.
[ John is keeping it to himself instead of explaining why his path is right. His decisions come not because he believes them to be the smartest but in spite of knowing they're not. ]
But I do have a question: is it a promise they'd want you to keep? A lot of people hide behind promises when they're doing it for more selfish reasons.
