I Simply Made One. (Book Club)

This month, the book club meets Tuesdays April 11th and 25th. It is reading Ascendance of a Bookworm by Miya Kazuki & illustrated by You Shiina, available via visual formats.

A certain college girl who's loved books ever since she was a little girl dies in an accident and is reborn in another world she knows nothing about. She is now Myne, the sickly five-year-old daughter of a poor soldier. To make things worse, the world she's been reborn in has a very low literacy rate and books mostly don't exist. She'd have to pay an enormous amount of money to buy one.

Myne resolves herself: If there aren't any books, she'll just have to make them! Her goal is to become a librarian. This story begins with her quest to make books so she can live surrounded by them!

You're somewhere new without everything you had before—without people or things important to you. How do you handle that? What have you found via the portals? What new have you discovered?

Chill Beats (Silent Disco)

This month, the silent disco happens Fridays April 7th and 21st. Headphones and music are available. Play your own music or listen to DJ's mix. (open)

Each night you will hear a mix of chill music ranging from house music to classical or anything else people find relaxing. The discos have channels of various chill music to find your relaxed zone. More than normal, they're a quiet place to be.

The ball is round, a game lasts 90 minutes, everything else is pure theory. (Movie viewings)

This month, The Entertainment Feed shows double features every Sunday and Thursday featuring multiverses.

One Sentence Stories. (Kid's Corner)

Children's programming includes writing stories collectively this month.

Whether in one session or over time, write stories together. It's simple: write a single sentence of a story and leave it for someone else. When you add a sentence, fold over the sentence before yours. At the end of the page/day, what a wondrous story will you have made?

Murderbot has started filming events in Trench via its drones.

Perhaps a drone sees you acting weirdly. Perhaps one accompanies you to the new city or alternate world. Contribute to the video collection of lore for Trench! (Can be arranged ICly or OOCly)

Now You See Me. Now You Don't. (Book Club)

Unusually, Murderbot's been harder to see this month. At book club, it's on time. However, its pockets bulge with contents, and it has a large bag equally full of items. One hand taps against a thigh. Still, it leads the discussions… a book choice inspired not only by the portals outside by the discussion last month with Luca.

"We may not be home, but these portals are the closest to it I've seen," Murderbot comments, "I've found more from home in the last seven days than the previous seven months.

Pastel Beats (Silent Disco)

One night, Murderbot looks a little odd—mostly like the Eden Rin everyone's come to know, except colored like Neopolitan. Hair split pink and brown. Eyes brown and pink the other way. Some of its clothes are still dark colors, but its jacket is white with pale pink accents. It looks uncomfortable with that. Eden's never talked much during Silent Disco, but the proprietor isn't talking at all. Instead, it's all text messages if you have questions. Hope you have your omni.

Is Your Multiverse a Comedy or a Horror Show? (Movie Nights)

Trench is a multiverse. It's the collection pod of a wet vacuum of the multiverse. When that's being made all the more obvious in the skies above, Murderbot plays the appropriate movies. What's more meta? Being a multiverse doesn't have to be any one thing, but it watches to see who likes what kind of multiverse. The blood magic may be a given, but what you make of it…

Comedy or horror, everything has moments that makes Murderbot wince. The second time no better than the first (screener) watch. It would tip out the back except that Murderbot forces itself to be available for people. Instead, Murderbot starts playing something else internally in its feed while the movie plays on the screen. Multiple feeds in the multiverse.

I Said. You Said. (Kids Corner)

Murderbot still gets nervous around kids, but to get the sentence activity going, it starts writing a few on different sheets of paper (though kids are of course welcome to start their own):

The dark forest loomed above, but a warm beam of light promised safety ahead.
Only five minutes of oxygen remained in their tank.
When the little girl fell asleep, her stuffed animal came to life.
"I can heal you," the moth promised.
The compass no longer pointed north.

"I've found the most wonderful objects coming through the portals," Maul said. He pointed and there were three ominous-looking black probe droids with a single red eye in the middle of each of them hovering close by. Still, Maul seemed to regard them fondly as something between servants and cherished pets. "These were my droids long ago but I thought them lost to me forever until now."

Also nearby was a much cuter-looking labor droid who occasionally chirped at one of the probe droids with the probe droid happily chirping back at them. "Though I've no idea where that one came from." Still, he wasn't about to shoo a potentially useful droid away, so Maul had let them stick around.

Murderbot nods at the droids following Maul around. Its drones are already whirring about town to identify the portal they came through and find its own. It's been collecting drones not only from home but... all over. Whatever it can get its hands on. It simply hasn't been showing them off like this.

"What kind of tasks are they suited for?" Murderbot asks with moderate interest, moderate only because its been doing its own research. It can always ask one of Maul's fans if that doesn't work well enough.

"Mostly information-gathering. Espionage, keeping an eye on targets, tracking down people. Things of that nature." Two of them came over, grumbling to Maul in the beeping language the droids used. "Rrrrzzzz" and "Zzzoooottsss" they said.

The labor droid came wheeling over, the probe droid that was apparently its friend hovering close to it. "Vooooo vork." It said helpfully.

Maul listened and pat the droid appreciatively on the head. "Apparently, this droid says it is also good for work."

Murderbot nods. It uses drones for much the same purposes, or it did. Now it is a simple proprietor of a community center providing entertainment. It doesn't perform espionage or have Targets. Things of that nature.

It watches the droid interactions and the pat on the head with some surprise. After all, Maul called them objects and his. Yet, he treats them like... pets? Perhaps this is the treatment Murderbot imagined free bots received in Preservation.

"How intelligent are they?" Murderbot asks. "They... seem sentient." The translation helps provide a starting point for Murderbot, even if it's only a single short sentence. Thiago, it never thought it would miss you!

Maul considered the question. "All droids are sentient to some degree or another. Exactly how intelligent that makes them is a matter up for debate." He thought for a moment. "They're able to reason and understand commands and can communicate to some extent."

The labor droid rolled over to Eden and held out its little three-fingered hand for the woman to shake. "Vooooo vriend?" It asked hopefully. Maul, contrary to his usual dour personality, was trying hard not to laugh at the antics of the little droid.

Murderbot thinks about the simpler botpilots. They wouldn't all be classified as highly intelligent, but they are all thinking, feeling bots. It especially thinks of the botpilot from the company gunship that asked it for help. They shared the same space with their consciousnesses. It...

Murderbot blinks at the droid that approaches it. Does it know? It's so friendly, reminding Murderbot of JollyBaby (yes it named itself). Murderbot takes the droid's hand and shakes it. "You can come hang out here on your own too," Murderbot says.

"Voooo vvoth vill!" The droid said, pointing to itself and then to the probe droid that was its special friend, assuring Murderbot they would both come to see her, before rolling back over towards Maul.

"It looks like it likes you," Maul said with a grin that showed off all his fangs. "I'll allow them to visit whenever they want." He didn't have a large amount of work for the droids but he would have some on occasion. Labor and probe droids were both useful beings to have around.

Murderbot waves at the bonded probe droid as well. It doesn't know what media those two will like, but it has more than enough for them to figure out. Network connections shouldn't be too hard, especially with no one else around. Naturally, Murderbot should assume Maul reviews any recordings the two have and act accordingly.

"I've worked with a lot of bots," Murderbot says. "They're a lot more common where I'm from than they are in Trench."

It cannot help the emotional reaction, however, to Maul saying he'll allow them to come. He's their owner. Not even "guardian" pretending to be nice about it (guardian is mostly a term that means owner) (Murderbot acknowledges, vaguely, that some guardians do not treat their bots like property or pets). "Good," Murderbot says, with a small measure of that hostility to ownership coming through. It can't help it, even if it likes Maul. Even if it too has a "guardian" per Preservation law and "owner" per Corporate Rim law.

"They are extremely common in my galaxy as well. They come in all forms, everything from small ones like this, ones that are humanoid in appearance, and some that are massive. All have their own purpose." Maul wasn't bad as far as owners went but that was the thing: he felt he did own his droids and that they were his to do with as he wished.

He didn't really understand why Eden suddenly seemed to go a bit chilly but he'd never been all that good at reading people. Sometimes he just didn't understand the others here in Trench.
