Content Warnings: Traps, ankle injury, mention of stiffening joints

Grouch Season
Loki has felt off-balance since he arrived in Trench. His magic is cut off from him, his powers here are a bitter reminder of the many ways he's been let down in his long life and it seems the everyone around him is determined to push him a little further off of a ledge.

As such, he finds himself stomping around Trench, this way or that, in his pursuit of needed errands or current compulsions. The cold doesn't bother him aside from an odd stiffness in his joints that he's been attributing to it, but he's still bundled up in soft furs because he can be.

Maybe another creature accidentally bumps his shoulder, maybe they're running for some reason and they startle him or maybe they simply walk out a door that he'd been about to walk into himself. It doesn't matter, because with his currently salty spirits just about anyone who crosses his path instead of going around it will get an icy glare.

"Do you mind?"

Tree Season
If the stiff joints aren't enough, Loki finds himself with urges that aren't of his typical sort. Normally, he's not one to fight many urges at all, so when the want to hunt down Warmbloods takes him, he doesn't hesitate to set out on that quest.

Unfortunately he's not the only one feeling such an urge and he finds himself caught in a trap on his journey.

There's an undignified groan echoing in the cold woods around him as he finds himself hanging upside down by his ankle from a high tree branch. Calling for help doesn't seem pressing yet, so he's just going to wriggle there, trying and failing to untie the rope trap that's caught him.

Bear season (TW: potentially extreme ankle injury)
Loki himself, isn't concerned about catching prey alive. It's a cruel world, he reasons, and he's killed for less. That's what has him setting up a number of bear traps under lightly fluffed snow. His ice powers make it particularly easy to get then disguised and though he's looking to trap a warmblood, he doesn't much care to let anyone else get caught, either.

There's really only one person Loki might warn and beyond that, he's content to sit hidden up in a tree and wait for someone to wander onto one of his traps.

Bear Season cw: ankle injury

One of the worst things you can be in a dangerous situation, Gurney used to tell Paul, is lucky.

If you've gotten lucky, it means you've allowed yourself to lose control of the situation. It means you failed to anticipate a threat. It means that you have avoided disaster not because of skill or strategy, but because of mindless entropy.

Paul is lucky several times over. Lucky that he had activated his personal shield at the distant sound of a branch cracking, his exhausted paranoia tapping the activation panel faster than his sense could tell him it was a faraway animal and not a threat. Lucky that his foot falls as it does in the mouth of the bear trap as he distractedly steps forward, alert to exactly the wrong thing. Lucky that when it closes, his other foot is already beginning to take his weight, so he doesn't fall as the teeth of the trap strike his shield, slow, and finish their arc into his boot and the meat of his leg underneath.

He thinks about all of this in a distant, abstract way as he doubles over and screams, an agonized sound hardly muffled at all by his scarf. And then his bodily conditioning takes over, and he brings himself to the ground in a half-kneeling crouch, deactivating the shield vibrating red at his ankle to assess the injury.

Nothing is broken. Paul can tell his most important tendons, muscles, and blood vessels are intact. There are three puncture wounds on one side and two on the other, piercing leather and skin. The trap is exerting a grinding pressure on his leg that's worse every time he moves even slightly, and there is blood pooling inside his boot. It hurts in a way that greys his vision at the edges.

An animal in a trap, he thinks, and he could almost laugh. Instead, he starts trying to determine the release mechanism of the trap, slipping into a brittle functional calm as he traces the construction of the cruel device with his eyes. A trap implies a hunter, and despite what that old woman had said, a human doesn't allow themself to remain trapped if they can free themselves before the hunter comes to collect them. Paul doesn't think she'd ever tried to fight with one leg bound.

Lucky again, Paul thinks, looking at the spring in the trap and the way it's bent- he doesn't know if the shield did it or if the trap was faulty, and it doesn't matter, if he can find something to fit between the teeth -

His right wrist flicks and a short double edged knife appears in his hand before he even looks up at the sound, Loki's instincts accurate about the nature of the thing he's caught. Paul leans his weight into his right knee as he shifts into as much of a defensive crouch as his predicament allows. He's almost completely hidden in his clothing except for his eyes shining above his scarf, focused and intent.

"I don't want to hurt you," he says, which is a great deal of confidence for someone who can't stand up or keep his voice from being threaded through with pain, "I know this isn't your fault, but you have to stay away from me."

Laurel doesn't want to be out for longer than she has to be and it's because of the cold. She has wrapped up as warm as possible, missing the convenience of being to travel on a bus or via cab like she could back home. It isn't the only thing that Laurel misses about home, but it's on her mind right now.

The hood pulled tight over her head obscures her vision so unfortunately for Laurel she lightly knocks into Loki as she's walking down the street; she turns to apologise and notices the icy glare that seems to bore into her very soul.

"Damn, I'm sorry. I - the hood -" she gestures to it with a gloved hand. "The hood makes it harder to see sometimes. I didn't hurt you, did I?"

She doesn't think so but Laurel wants to make sure.

"Wow." Laurel scoffs, shaking her head at him. "You try to see if someone is okay and they just throw it back in your face." Maybe he was just having an off day, but Laurel doesn't know Loki and she usually tries to be friendly towards everyone in this place - like they had been with her.

"But in answer to your question, no. I don't think you look frail. It's just common courtesy to apologise to a person when you bump into them. Also, to see if they're fine afterwards."

She takes a breath after that to keep her tone even and not sound so ticked off.

Herc's not entirely sure why he feels quite so on edge when he hears those particular grunts, but there's just something that's not quite... right. Seeing the man dangling upside down by the ankle does little to ease his instincts clamoring to get away, so rather than being amused or rushing to help, Herc stares up at Loki, brow quirked up as he calls, "Having a little trouble up there, mate?"

... What a dickhead.

"I'd hate to intrude when you're having such a good time," comes the significantly amused if a touch flat response.
