1. house hunt
manabu yuuki @ housing in crenshaw

"...Hello?"

Manabu stops just shy of the next, creaky step in the large and (seemingly) empty building he's entered in. Things don't fall entirely silent until the little dog's tippy-taps click to a stop at the foot of the stairs, punctuated by an impatient snuffle.

Just find an empty space and make it your own, they said...jeez, really? That seems so...invasive. Because it is. But what is he supposed to do? Build a place himself? Fat chance. And no one seemed keen on trading menial work for rent, either - that uncomfortable separation of Sleepers and Wakers being the basis to dote upon him. He doesn't deserve that. Maybe others who suffered or struggled more do, but he sure doesn't.

The dog yips, its voice carrying through the open foyer and, perhaps, to spaces beyond, giving Manabu a little bristle. He glares over his shoulder and shushes.

"If you're gonna follow around, you're gonna be quiet, okay?!"

A moody little whine follows, and the dog sits. Manabu rolls his eye and looks back up, sighing and starting to climb up. Maybe nobody else really is here...

2. the dog
manabu yuuki @ the rainy streets of trench

[whether he knows it or not, this spunky little dog is a part of him. Manabu's a bit slow on the uptake when it comes to things of the heart, so the efforts they take to convey that to him are slow to take...yet still the little scrapper persists, because persisting is what Manabu himself does.

the dog is galloping through the rainy streets, sniffing around with a clear, anxious frustration, growling and yapping at passers-by that don't seem to be what they want.

eventually, they find a Sleeper. perhaps an old friend, perhaps a stranger who seems to have some shades of apparent compassion.

either way, the barking will persist, to the point of hopping and nipping at clothes for attention, trying to encourage the Sleeper and its omen to follow them.

come on! hurry up!]

3. event: bloodsport
manabu yuuki @ open lots within trench, near the canals

It can't be possible, but it feels as though Manabu's blood is both boiling and freezing at the same time. Sleeping doesn't help, moving doesn't help, sitting, standing, breathing...

What the hell is going on?

Cold fire flickers, sparking here and there with some residual electricity. It races off his body and snakes off into the saber he holds out as though it were drawn to it like a lightning rod. This should hurt...way more than it does. No more than an itch, an ache...

But the longer he stands still, the more it hurts. Manabu winces, doubling over for a minute before getting his stable footing back. He swallows down fresh panic, swiveling his head around so his good eye can survey, growing in desperation and doubt.

What does he do? What is he supposed to do?!

Get help, obviously. Somewhere. The thought is in his mind even as the confusion begins to overwhelm him; he yelps in alarm as another tongue of flame laps up across his shoulders and arms. Something catches his attention just over the bridge of his nose, and in fear and impulse, he swings that sparking saber with a yell.

4. event: river of regret
manabu yuuki @ a canoe on a strange river

D'AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH-!

[down he goes, dropped by the menacing murder that swept him up in the first place. Manabu's a small guy, so at least he's not at risk to toppling the canoe he plops into, but it's graceless, and he may wind up landing on whomever was there before.]

A...aowh...what the hell...?!

5. event: growing pains
soldier blue @ misc. planting grounds in trench

The rain has eased back into a steady, but gentle drizzle. The streets are still slick, but the wind has died down, making walking easier to manage. And while Blue no longer walks alone, he must do so slowly, carefully, putting distance between himself and the many, many open minds that surround him.

There's some reprieve here, especially with most citizens inside to avoid catching sick from the rain. A faint, pale blue aura keeps Blue dry and safe from that sort of fear - one more reason he has to take his time. The lion ambles just as slowly, letting him keep a hand on him for balance, emanating a steady sense of safety and assurance that Blue would find in himself were he to search.

Right now, though, his attention is outside of himself: The spark of a Sleeper - that familiar echo of their shared beginnings here - lights up in the gloom, and Blue is drawn to an open gardening space where someone seems to either be puzzling over what to do or...why.

Blue slows to a stop at a safe distance to observe - as much to avoid startling them as it is to perhaps avoid an unexpected attack - but it's hard to ignore someone faintly glowing in the rain for long.

6. strain
soldier blue @ rainy streets of lumenwood

Hh...nh...

[without much warning, Blue drops, just barely able to catch himself by his hands, sparing his head a nasty impact. but it's all he can do to keep up, his stamina waned.

he can't...keep moving. he heeded the advice - pointed to this district for healing - but he can't get there. between his natural frailty and the almost ceaseless torment of the moon-addled minds of the coldbloods, Blue's reaching a limit for his own faculties.

the lion, aware, circles him and snuffs, nudging at him and searching for a chance to try and heft his body up over him somehow. it's kind of hard to do without the proper limbs...and before they can, the lion's ears flick to the sound of someone approaching. it turns to step in front of Blue, letting out a warning rumble, daring whomever it is to approach with ill intent.]

7. event: river of regret
soldier blue @ a canoe on a strange river

In a blustering flurry of feathers, beaks, and talons, Blue's form appears - breathless and ruffled, but otherwise unharmed. He quivers, despite the heavy layers he wears, and stares at his shaking hands.

He's very quickly aware he's not alone, and even while the feathers flutter free of his hands, his red eyes flicker up to the other person in the boat - silent, but concerned and questioning.

What...is happening?

The thought leaves him unchecked.

8. frenzy
soldier blue @ a monster attack in trench

[a bright bullet of light precedes the sound of impact and a garbled, monstrous roar. moldy wood cracks and splinters under repeated swipes of tremendous force, and a mangled, starved beast grows more frenzied in its attempts to clear obstacles to get to the source of the glowing, fading light.

for the empathetically insightful, terror bleeds through the near area without recourse. terror and fury from two sources tied to a similar thread, for while Blue struggles to get some distance within the cellar for himself from harm's way, the lion is recovering from being shaken off and lunging onto the beast's.

it's not going great, though, because there's more than one of these mad creatures in the yard.]

Likewise, Blue needs a moment to recapture a bit of familiarity of this person. It doesn't take long - Yuri left quite an impression, and it's only been so many days. The Mu had wondered if he'd gotten along alright...before realizing it may have been silly to wonder at all, given the strength of will he'd sensed within.

Still. It's always in him to worry and wonder on those around him, the ones he makes connections big and small to.

Blue makes a faint sound of regard, but it takes a moment before Yuri's words really sink in and give him reason to frown.

"'More'?" he echoes. "What else...has happened to you since?"

[personal profile] vibing 2021-09-11 01:17 pm (UTC)(link)
"Oh, you know," Yuri holds up a hand and while he was going for fire, ice crystalizes around his fingers tips. He glares at this hand, then shakes off the ice, the shards hitting the otherwise calm water. "Jeez. Not good at it yet."

His eyes skip away, out at the water, at the statues they're coming up upon. "No clue what this is about, though. Think there's any chance we're just on a nice boat tour? Super romantic."

[personal profile] firstroar 2021-09-11 04:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Blue watches Yuri with a soft, concerned frown. He's not the only one with peculiar powers and happenings, but it's not any easier to witness...he can't help but worry. Perhaps he worries as much as Yuri seems not worried, as if to fill a space left empty.

"I couldn't understand...what the birds intend for us," Blue admits with a gentle shake of his head before turning to look over his shoulder at what's ahead.

...Wait...

"The water..."

Something's wrong with it.

[personal profile] vibing 2021-09-12 06:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Yuri's lack of worry only lasts until Blue points out the water. Yuri glances at that, and then takes a breath, only to smell the stench of rot. He coughs, covering his nose with the back of his leather-clad hand.

"Fuck. Smells like something died here--"

He just says it when his eyes land on something, or someone. A girl with pink hair and what's usually a white dress, but now it's stained with the rust of old blood. Estelle. Her body is crumpled, limp, and before Yuri knows what he's doing, he's up out of his seat and about to leap into the water to go and save her.

"Estelle!"

[personal profile] firstroar 2021-09-12 07:36 pm (UTC)(link)
"No--"

Before Blue can even register the rancid smell, Yuri's own keen awareness and that bright spark of horrified recognition pulls the Mu's attention. It jolts through Blue's body like a little surge of energy - enough that he can lean forward and catch Yuri by the waist and hold onto him. He's not strong enough bodily to keep him there, but his will imposes a bit of psionic measures to anchor him.

"Don't!" He holds his breath to keep hold of him in turn while trying to search out past the fear.

"There's..."

No one else is here. Yuri--

No one alive.
vibing: (angry | hurt | fight | skit)

[personal profile] vibing 2021-09-12 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Blue's arms and his power hold Yuri back from leaping right into the awful water. Blue's thoughts sink into him and he chokes back a harsh breath, his face hot.

She's dead. She can't be dead! He would never let her die, but here she is: dead.

She asked him to kill her. She begged him to, but he refused, not when there was a chance to save her, and he did. He saved her! She can't be dead.

"Who killed her? I'll kill them!" He shouts, voice low and rough, straining against Blue's arms. He can't do anything, but his body is thrumming with the need to, he has to do something, he can't just see her dead and do nothing.

[personal profile] firstroar 2021-09-12 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yuri--"

Blue exhales, having to breathe in the horrendous stench of death that threatens to knock him right out. His physical grip wanes while the psionic grip remains, and his arms slack as he slumps back to sitting.

He takes Yuri's hand. Even without looking out where Yuri's eyes are, he can see it. Feel it, practically, from the way outrage reverberates from Yuri.

It's not...truly her. Nothing in that water is as it seems. Think...!
vibing: (annoyed | angry | no)

[personal profile] vibing 2021-09-12 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Yuri lets out a shuddering breath, and tries to force himself to listen. It's easier since he doesn't have to use his ears, he can feel Blue's thoughts in his head, telling him it isn't her. It isn't Estelle. She didn't die, he didn't fail.

"It's not her," he agrees, voice rough. "It's not her because she's safe and living in Halure and no one, no one, is going to mess with her again."

It has to be true. He refuses to believe that it isn't true.

He steps back, enough that he isn't in danger of toppling the canoe right over, and sits back down hard on the bench, pushing a hand over his face.
firstroar: (pic#6892353)

[personal profile] firstroar 2021-09-13 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
The moment it's certain he means to give up the effort to leap from the boat, that telekinetic force ebbs away. But Blue still has his hand in both of his, and he's not keen on letting it go in a hurry.

"I believe that," he says. "and you should, too. This is--"

False. It's--

His words falter first, and his thoughts second, falling quiet for a dreadful heartbeat as his eyes catch a golden glimmer dangling in a stream along the rock face. A woman is bound in wire and rope to a stake in some impossible juxtaposition, seemingly designed to horrify on sight.

...It's false....
vibing: (annoyed | angry | tired | skit)

[personal profile] vibing 2021-09-16 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
Yuri looks down at their hands. He could pull away, but it feels kind of nice right now. He doesn't really want to bother moving, not when moving might mean looking at Estelle again, hanging there, limp and dead.

He looks up when Blue's thoughts stop, following his gaze. He grips Blue's hands tighter.

"It's fake. It's all fake, don't believe it."

Repeating it has to help, it helped him. If it isn't real, then they can still be alive.
firstroar: (pic#6891985)

[personal profile] firstroar 2021-09-16 07:37 pm (UTC)(link)
This isn't unlike the mental suggestions the Terras computers could trigger during psychological examinations, but its potency is much more powerful. The full sensory engagement of it makes that clear, and with Yuri here, that tells Blue that this isn't just in his own head. He can't say he's ever encountered suggestions strong enough to grip people into a shared dreamstate...

Blue holds fast to Yuri's hands while he tries to rise above their shared distress; having this person here gives the former Soldier a reason to try and find a way out of this.

He looks past Physis' false form, seeing his other dear friends strewn about along the riverside and the shallows. Harley, Brau, Zel...Jomy, the children...

If they were truly dead, they would not be here. He would've failed his efforts on Meggido, and they'd have failed to escape Nazca's destruction. If they'd have washed up here as he did, he'd have felt them arrive, felt them react...

Felt them die.

So even as tears well up in his eyes and fall without resistance, Blue's brow knits as he tries to decipher this message. It has to be a message.

"This all started...with birds, right?" he wonders. "Of a sort...I've never seen before..."
vibing: (soft | look | talk)

[personal profile] vibing 2021-09-17 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
"Seemed like ravens," Yuri says, his voice low and a little hoarse. Ravens. He lets out a breath and tugs on Blue's hands. "Hey, look at me. Look at me and not her. It's all fake, okay? If Estelle's fake, then your girl is fake too. Estelle's still alive, and I hope to hell that your girl is alive."

Blue helped him. He can help Blue right back.

"Estelle, she's a princess, y'know? She's a princess who helped save the world, who almost sacrificed herself to save the world. She's pretty damn great. Tell me about your girl."
firstroar: (pic#6891949)

[personal profile] firstroar 2021-09-17 01:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Perhaps Yuri was giving that advice as much for himself as for Blue, but it was welcome either way. He fixes his eyes on Yuri and that surface-level notion of ravens and a princess. Just rippled, glimmering figments around the name Estelle - like colors reflected in a puddle of oil. Blood would be more apt, considering their circumstances, but that's far too grim.

Yet Yuri speaks of sacrifice in the same breath; this place naturally has that effect. Death. Suffering. Sacrifice.

Blue's eyes move down from Yuri's to their hands.

"Physis...my goddess." He says it with no sense of irony...but no real reverence, either. Just remorse.

"All I could do for her in the end...is release the memories of her past. The ones that hurt. The ones...that isolated her from the Mu.

"I can only hope she'll forgive me for what I did. And that she knows...I only did what I did to help her."
vibing: (determined | angry | annoyed | skit)

[personal profile] vibing 2021-09-18 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
"You helped her. That's good," like it's as simple as that. Yuri grips his hands tightly, maybe too tightly. "You helped her, and she isn't dead in this lake."

And neither is Estelle. He can see her in his mind's eye, smiling and happy to see him the last time he visited Halure, on a trip back to Zaphias to see Flynn. She was always so joyful, it was easy to forget how scared she was when they first met. Scared and determined.

"She isn't dead," he says again, firmly.

[personal profile] firstroar 2021-09-18 05:06 pm (UTC)(link)
"No...they're not."

Despite the tears that trail down his face, Blue utters that quietly, but certainly. He can see it - the image of that happy, living Estelle. It's a vision wrapped in glimmers of desperate hope, adamant refusal to accept the sensory assault trying to convince Yuri of what he otherwise speaks.

The air's gotten less foul part-in-thanks to Blue's admission of his worry and regret, but he can't say he realizes it, not when Yuri demands and takes up so much of his attention.

"But I don't understand..." What is there to gain, frightening us in such a way?
vibing: (look | tired | serious | pout)

[personal profile] vibing 2021-09-20 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
"I don't know. I don't know why they'd show us this, but, hell, I don't know why we got dragged here in the first place. But we'll get out of this, okay? You and me," he's not good with crying, but at least Blue is still focused, still holding onto him. He hasn't broken down entirely.

"So she's your goddess and you did something to her head. That, yeah. I," maybe it's a compulsion, maybe it's the strange safeness he feels with Blue, "I almost killed Estelle. I didn't want to, but I almost had to, because I trusted someone I shouldn't have. He took he, used her. It sounds like, like these girls have something in common."
firstroar: (pic#5951992)

[personal profile] firstroar 2021-09-20 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
Something in common...

Blue's expression softens in contemplation as his memories of Physis and the regrets tied to her intermingle with Yuri's own confession and the fragmented notions they give through their hands still holding fast. Tears have stopped freely flowing, so just the damp trail of them remains while the rest linger at the edges of his eyes. Weeping for his sins is futile here, isn't it?

"Even as I hoped she would forgive me...there was no scorn in Physis' heart when I left her. Only concern and love." His faraway gaze moves back to Yuri.

"If she is as kind of heart as you knew her...then there is really is much in common between them."
vibing: (huh | soft | look)

[personal profile] vibing 2021-09-21 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
Yuri holds on tight to Blue's hands, meeting his gaze, and just as he's about to respond, as he's about to agree that Estelle is the kindest person he knows, and that's the only reason she's alive, the boat, the lake, dissolve around them.

Yuri's vision recenters in a dark building, and he's still holding onto Blue. He lets out a breath, looking around. They're seated on the floor, just like they were in the boat, but the lake is no where to be seen.

"I guess we did it. Huh. You doing okay?"

The alteration brings them back to living civilization, so alongside the fresher air and lack of movement, Blue notices the distant, ambient sense of others going about their lives in their own fashion.

His eyes blink slowly, and it takes a moment longer to focus back on Yuri himself and the question posed.

"I didn't even feel it," he murmurs. "The shift...it was like a dream."

A dream but not.

[personal profile] vibing 2021-09-24 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
"Guess so," Yuri doesn't dwell on it. It isn't important. It's important that they're here, and they're both okay, and there are no dead bodies around them.

He picks himself up with a groan, and holds a hand out for Blue. "Man, that was weird."

Blue shifts to his knees before accepting the hand up, clutching onto Yuri's forearm while stabilizing himself. He lifts his head and looks about.

"Where...?"

Where are we?

His eyes are drawn immediately up to the clock tower looming ahead of them, drifting down to the expansive structure its tied to. A school...?
vibing: (huh | annoyed | neutral | skit)

[personal profile] vibing 2021-09-25 04:47 pm (UTC)(link)
"No clue. Guessing back in Trench somewhere," he lets Blue hold onto him. He's learned by now that Blue isn't very stable on his own, and even if he doesn't love touch for touch's sake, this has a point.

And he isn't at all curious about where they are. He just wants to get out of here. Schools, libraries, places of learning, they were never his thing. Rita, though, Rita would be having a blast.
firstroar: (pic#6892312)

[personal profile] firstroar 2021-09-25 07:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Sensing Yuri's wishes to move on helps Blue set aside curiosity of his own. He realizes, too, that there'd be no safe way to explore, and he hardly has the stamina to spare.

"If that's so, then...those creatures would be near, yes?" His eyes move away from the tower and out around the space ahead of them. "The ones who...cling to lanterns."

Very peculiar creatures. Barely as sentient as animals from Blue's own perception, but still driven with purpose. It's almost as if they were designed for what they do, and in that way, they're quiet off-putting.

And pitiful.
vibing: (back | hands on hips | neutral)

[personal profile] vibing 2021-09-26 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, yeah, let's find one of those," maybe they should talk more about what they saw, about what they experienced. Seeing Estelle's body is still roiling in Yuri's head, but getting Blue somewhere safe is more important, now.

He helps Blue walk out of the school, and one of the lamps is right outside. "So, where to?"
firstroar: (pic#6891944)

[personal profile] firstroar 2021-09-26 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
The small, moaning creatures are still a troubling thing to behold even when he's braced to bear witness to them. Blue frowns down at them for a beat after the question, his gaze drifting down the road as he considers.

At this point, he has no place of his own to go. Others have gotten to work reclaiming houses, making them suitable living spaces, but it's a level of labor intensity Blue cannot manage. Imposing himself on others isn't his ideal solution, so the only thing he has at-hand is...

"...The Lumenarium."
