1. house hunt
manabu yuuki @ housing in crenshaw
"...Hello?"
Manabu stops just shy of the next, creaky step in the large and (seemingly) empty building he's entered in. Things don't fall entirely silent until the little dog's tippy-taps click to a stop at the foot of the stairs, punctuated by an impatient snuffle.
Just find an empty space and make it your own, they said...jeez, really? That seems so...invasive. Because it is. But what is he supposed to do? Build a place himself? Fat chance. And no one seemed keen on trading menial work for rent, either - that uncomfortable separation of Sleepers and Wakers being the basis to dote upon him. He doesn't deserve that. Maybe others who suffered or struggled more do, but he sure doesn't.
The dog yips, its voice carrying through the open foyer and, perhaps, to spaces beyond, giving Manabu a little bristle. He glares over his shoulder and shushes.
"If you're gonna follow around, you're gonna be quiet, okay?!"
A moody little whine follows, and the dog sits. Manabu rolls his eye and looks back up, sighing and starting to climb up. Maybe nobody else really is here...

2. the dog
manabu yuuki @ the rainy streets of trench
[whether he knows it or not, this spunky little dog is a part of him. Manabu's a bit slow on the uptake when it comes to things of the heart, so the efforts they take to convey that to him are slow to take...yet still the little scrapper persists, because persisting is what Manabu himself does.
the dog is galloping through the rainy streets, sniffing around with a clear, anxious frustration, growling and yapping at passers-by that don't seem to be what they want.
eventually, they find a Sleeper. perhaps an old friend, perhaps a stranger who seems to have some shades of apparent compassion.
either way, the barking will persist, to the point of hopping and nipping at clothes for attention, trying to encourage the Sleeper and its omen to follow them.
come on! hurry up!]

3. event: bloodsport
manabu yuuki @ open lots within trench, near the canals
It can't be possible, but it feels as though Manabu's blood is both boiling and freezing at the same time. Sleeping doesn't help, moving doesn't help, sitting, standing, breathing...
What the hell is going on?
Cold fire flickers, sparking here and there with some residual electricity. It races off his body and snakes off into the saber he holds out as though it were drawn to it like a lightning rod. This should hurt...way more than it does. No more than an itch, an ache...
But the longer he stands still, the more it hurts. Manabu winces, doubling over for a minute before getting his stable footing back. He swallows down fresh panic, swiveling his head around so his good eye can survey, growing in desperation and doubt.
What does he do? What is he supposed to do?!
Get help, obviously. Somewhere. The thought is in his mind even as the confusion begins to overwhelm him; he yelps in alarm as another tongue of flame laps up across his shoulders and arms. Something catches his attention just over the bridge of his nose, and in fear and impulse, he swings that sparking saber with a yell.

4. event: river of regret
manabu yuuki @ a canoe on a strange river
D'AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH-!
[down he goes, dropped by the menacing murder that swept him up in the first place. Manabu's a small guy, so at least he's not at risk to toppling the canoe he plops into, but it's graceless, and he may wind up landing on whomever was there before.]
A...aowh...what the hell...?!

5. event: growing pains
soldier blue @ misc. planting grounds in trench
The rain has eased back into a steady, but gentle drizzle. The streets are still slick, but the wind has died down, making walking easier to manage. And while Blue no longer walks alone, he must do so slowly, carefully, putting distance between himself and the many, many open minds that surround him.
There's some reprieve here, especially with most citizens inside to avoid catching sick from the rain. A faint, pale blue aura keeps Blue dry and safe from that sort of fear - one more reason he has to take his time. The lion ambles just as slowly, letting him keep a hand on him for balance, emanating a steady sense of safety and assurance that Blue would find in himself were he to search.
Right now, though, his attention is outside of himself: The spark of a Sleeper - that familiar echo of their shared beginnings here - lights up in the gloom, and Blue is drawn to an open gardening space where someone seems to either be puzzling over what to do or...why.
Blue slows to a stop at a safe distance to observe - as much to avoid startling them as it is to perhaps avoid an unexpected attack - but it's hard to ignore someone faintly glowing in the rain for long.

6. strain
soldier blue @ rainy streets of lumenwood
Hh...nh...
[without much warning, Blue drops, just barely able to catch himself by his hands, sparing his head a nasty impact. but it's all he can do to keep up, his stamina waned.
he can't...keep moving. he heeded the advice - pointed to this district for healing - but he can't get there. between his natural frailty and the almost ceaseless torment of the moon-addled minds of the coldbloods, Blue's reaching a limit for his own faculties.
the lion, aware, circles him and snuffs, nudging at him and searching for a chance to try and heft his body up over him somehow. it's kind of hard to do without the proper limbs...and before they can, the lion's ears flick to the sound of someone approaching. it turns to step in front of Blue, letting out a warning rumble, daring whomever it is to approach with ill intent.]

7. event: river of regret
soldier blue @ a canoe on a strange river
In a blustering flurry of feathers, beaks, and talons, Blue's form appears - breathless and ruffled, but otherwise unharmed. He quivers, despite the heavy layers he wears, and stares at his shaking hands.
He's very quickly aware he's not alone, and even while the feathers flutter free of his hands, his red eyes flicker up to the other person in the boat - silent, but concerned and questioning.
What...is happening?
The thought leaves him unchecked.

8. frenzy
soldier blue @ a monster attack in trench
[a bright bullet of light precedes the sound of impact and a garbled, monstrous roar. moldy wood cracks and splinters under repeated swipes of tremendous force, and a mangled, starved beast grows more frenzied in its attempts to clear obstacles to get to the source of the glowing, fading light.
for the empathetically insightful, terror bleeds through the near area without recourse. terror and fury from two sources tied to a similar thread, for while Blue struggles to get some distance within the cellar for himself from harm's way, the lion is recovering from being shaken off and lunging onto the beast's.
it's not going great, though, because there's more than one of these mad creatures in the yard.]

He gives the dog a little smile. "Fritter, could you help our little friend, here?"
Fritter looks up at him, then at the dog, and skips over to him, chittering softly.
no subject
'Need help' is mixed in there with 'can't ask, too risky' along with 'don't know what to ask' into the cocktail of the mindstate both in and out...and it all comes out as bark bark bark.
Wu's grip on Manabu's shoulder is almost like an injection of valium, one which risks draining the energy out of his legs if he doesn't steady himself and keep flat feet. Even as he does so, he utters in confusion and dimming alarm, the way anyone getting snowed in their panic would.
"What do you mean? I--fire keeps happening, then icing over, then fire, so if you hang on, you might get caught up, too...!"
Never mind being so chilly to the touch as it stands; this charred and threadbare shirt that's left from the latest fireburst is already getting a bit crinkly from the fast temperature shift under the skin.
no subject
He's getting the feedback of Manabu's feelings, but he's not letting them affect him because Manabu needs him to be calm right now.
"I don't think you're going to hurt me. You wouldn't if you could choose not to, right?"
Fritter is listening to the dog, chittering back to the barks. She's listening to the dog, trying to understand what the dog needs.
no subject
The dog lets out a whine as well, pawing at Fritter before laying on their stomach, ears back with a whimper. They just wanna be okay!
"Look, I just--" Manabu tries to withdraw, but all that Chill makes it little more than a slight lean away. "I, I really need to figure out what's causing this so I can make it stop!"
no subject
Does he? It doesn't matter, really, because he's trying really hard to believe it, and presses that feeling through his hands. Fritter sits down next to the dog, patting them on the back with her little hand.
"You can do it because you're really smart and strong and you like to do things! You like to have something to do, right? You could use these powers to do something good for this town! You could do, do-- I don't know what but something really cool. You know that in Republic City, lightning benders helped to control the city's electricity supply? And fire benders can create amazing art! You can find something good to do with your power. It's not going to control you."
no subject
While the dog seems to be consoled and placated by raccoon headpats, Manabu's still struggling to understand why this big deal isn't a big deal to Wu.
Actually, he's talking to him like he's-- like he's Mako? With the fire things?
"Wait, no!" He shakes his head. "Wu, I-I'm not a bender. I don't have magic powers! I'm just--" Just a normal person. Maybe the normalest person Deerington dragged down! "Are you sure this is me and not--not some prank?"
no subject
If anyone can help, Wu knows Mako can. His faith in Mako's abilities are unwavering, and that feeling presses through their connection, too.
"You know, I didn't have any powers before, either, but now I do, and it's super weird but I'm kind of sort of getting used to it. But I still can't bend! I wish I could bend, that could be so cool."
no subject
no subject
Is this helpful? Wu's trying, he's trying to hard to help here, and he's pretty sure he's failing.
no subject
Gosh Wu why don't you have all the answers immediately all the time.
no subject
On the ground, Fritter wraps her little arms around Manabu's dog, and Wu decides to do the same. The two of them move in sync, encompassing Sleeper and Omen in hugs that douse them with calm.
no subject
Gradually, he lifts his hands to place on Wu's back, his head tilting down against his shoulder.
"I'm sorry for the trouble," he mutters.
no subject
But helping? He never really did it, before. He never thought he had a reason or the means to, but as soon as he helped with the evacuation in Republic City, it stirred something in him, and he realized he loves it. He loves to help, and he loves that Manabu leans into him, that he lets go, and Wu hugs him tighter.
"Hey, it's okay. I'm really glad I can be here for you."
no subject
So he clears his throat and pulls away to sheepishly rub at the back of his head.
"Y...you said Mako was dealing with this?" he asks. "Er, or, uh...other people were, right? Which means I guess I gotta listen in, huh."
no subject
"Yeah! He's helping people figure out how to control the fire. You know, he's been able to firebend since he was a kid, so he's had forever to learn it, and he's learned a lot! I know that you'd feel better about it if you worked with him."
no subject
"Right...m-maybe..." But it still doesn't fully make sense in his head. Him having powers is...it's first of all not normal, and second of all...
...there's only the first thing, actually. It's not normal, okay! Hard to compute.
The hand on the back of his head starts to settle on his neck before falling away, back down to his side. Even if it doesn't make a lot of sense, it's not changing what's going on, right? Which means he can't just stand there saying no, no! and expect things to change. Use your head, Yuuki.
He exhales, bobbing his head in a nod.
"...Thanks, Wu." He flicks a glance past the bridge of his nose Wu's way. "I, I mean...I'm pretty sure I'd just be. Setting everything on fire if you didn't just show up, so..."
no subject
Like he didn't just say anything wild at all, he turns to the two omens, still snuggling on the ground. Fritter is still petting the little dog with her paws, and looks very content on the ground with him, even with the rain still drizzling around them.
"And who's this little guy? Are you Manabu's omen? Look at you, you're adorable!"
no subject
Manabu frowns down at the critters, not nearly as charmed. But what does the dog care? he's living the life: raccoons have grabby fingies that are also good for pets! Unshackled acceptance of affection...wow, if only Manabu himself was like this.
no subject
no subject
"Uh..."
Would he have...felt that? A dog...bursting out of his body? Or just as smoke -- like, what? Like a chainsmoker? Wait, that doesn't make sense.
This hurts his head to visualize. This is why he doesn't really visualize things too much.
"I, uh. I don't...really know. I've been...kind of smoking and setting on fire a lot, so..." So... "Maybe?"
And Wu's not at all puzzled by this. Is it weird, then, that Manabu is? He scratches at his cheek while watching the pet-fest. Puzzled is at least better than actively panicked, so perhaps he ought to take the small victories.
"You think they're here for good, or is this going to be more of those...weird stuff every month kind of things?"
