Catacombs, Pai Sho, and seeking the Moon Spirit

Who: Iroh & Open
What: End of March catch all
When: Last two weeks of March
Where: Catacombs, Gaze, & Salt Lake

Content Warnings: Mentions of war and death likely, will update as needed

A: Careful what you wish for
The catacombs were a very tempting place, ones in which it was very important for one to stop and look inward least they become lost or caught in the many different traps that were there. The patience to ensure that the water was safe to drink and traverse. Fire was an unforgiving thing, even in a spirit in which the flames of courage roared, but those flames gave off no heat compared to the ones of Iroh's past or that he commanded now. Materials goods held little meaning when they were devoid of sentimental value, and so the temptation was fleeting and easy to ignore. Through each of these challenges, Iroh would offer his assistance and guidance to those who might have faltered, or who were searching for a way through the catacombs.

Now he stands before the warning, 'THE KINDNESS OF THE WORLD IS BEHIND YOU: HELL IS AHEAD. AS ABOVE, SO IS BELOW. THAT WHICH HAS BEEN, WILL RETURN AGAIN.' and feels the darkness that stares at him. The shortcomings and transgressions of his past weigh heavily on his shoulders. But he refuses to turn back and simply stands there, closing his eyes and taking a deep breath.

"If you look for the dark, it is all you will ever see."

B: A game of intuition and speed, but slow methodical strategy
After the adventures in the catacombs, Iroh was in need of some time to relax and gather his thoughts. There had been much of trench that had been rather worrying, and yet just as much that was fascinating. The people of the city were just as varied and it was strange seeing so many different backgrounds and cultures collected in one place, something which pleased him quite a bit. Still, though there were some familiar comforts of home which he had come to long for a bit, Jasmine Tea and his own bed being among them. But there was another which now was laid out on a table before him.

Among the various tables that littered Gaze and the school sat an old man with a board and array of tiles before him. Setting them into place seems to bring a small grin though there was only a handful that he knew of that had any knowledge of the game in this world. Still, Iroh was more than happy to teach any who were interested.

C: Spirits are not to be trifled with.
Iroh had heard stories of amazing things that occurred, those that came to pass beneath the full moon. Of course, Iroh was the kind to need to investigate such things on his own, to see the spirits of this world at world and marvel at their splendor. So as the full moon began to rise, he made his way to the salt lake. No light other than the small flame conjured in his hand as he left the lights of the city and ventured out into the wilderness, finding beneath the light of the moon that the flame was barely necessary. The lake which had always been black and devoid of light, beneath the silver tendrils of light from the moon, now glowed pink. It seemed to be brimming with life and energy, almost as if it were a portal to another world or a time before the corruption.

"Such a magnificent sight. It is truly the work of the spirits."

"You mean...other than through our Omens? Because I knew Orville wouldn't fail me, but he's still a baby, so I had to be sure."

She's trying to set aside the voice which told her that Cassie would hate her play, hate how it portrayed Lexi as always being in her older sister's shadow, even if it were true. even if she had to mother her own mother and sister, even if Lexi couldn't avoid it, not and keep her mother sober enough for work and Cassie stable enough for school]

...who? Rue? [because Rue seemed entirely too tangled up in her own problems and what little wasn't, was devoted to Jules]

"Yeah. You're right. Even though our Omnis have the video option, it's still not the same as talking in person."

She'd never really been into the Facetime and Skype options for talking. She'd rather do it in person, even if the conversation was a hard one. And she knew that sometime, she'd have to get Cassie to admit to what was going on. Though, Iroh was right, Lexi's life hadn't been particularly easy. She was still trying to figure out who she was, what she wanted out of life. Even though she was pretty sure those were processes everyone had to have, they were still daunting.

"...I don't know. Maybe? Probably. But she's hidden behind me, too." Not as often and usually for Rue's own benefit.

Lexi finds herself releasing a short laugh. "I'd like to think so? But I think we've grown apart, probably to the point of no return. Even though I'd like to return." She misses knowing that Rue had her back at all times, just as Lexi had hers. The comfort in knowing that Rue wasn't cool and didn't care and Lexi wasn't cool, either, and was trying to not care.

Lexi arranges herself so that she's sitting with her legs pretzeled out in front of her. The abyss didn't seem so close, at least for now. She was under no illusions that she'd have to face it again if she wanted to get out but it didn't seem as daunting in good company.

"I hope so. I mean, it would be nice to get my best friend back and not just tag along with my sister's friends like some little puppy." Maddy and Kat had never made her feel unwelcome, exactly, but she missed having a social life and friends who were her own.

Lexi knew she wanted to, but she didn't know about Rue. She seemed so caught up in her relationship with Jules which wasn't a bad thing. She wanted Rue to be happy (and clean, but that was another story). But she had to wonder how safe it was to build a life surrounding only one person. And she was entirely aware of the irony involving her and Rue.

"I hope so. A--a kindred spirit sounds good. There's this book--well, series of books I love which talk about that. That kindred spirits last as long as life and have nothing to do with romance, just about kinship."

Lexi has a small edge in which she's always reading and she's relatively genre savvy, but so much of what made Deer Country itself was foreign to her in real life. So she was in the line waiting to see The Hobbit movies, but never imagined anything like it would apply to her life.

[OOC: no, no, RL always comes before RP! anyone who says otherwise is lying, a jerk, or both. and I can backtag for literal months. ❤]

"I would...that sounds nice. I have a friend at home, Rue. My best friend. She's...going through some stuff. But if there's ever a friendship I'd want to keep through lifetimes, it would be with Rue."

[the idea, though, is sort of heady. she's Jewish, but mostly an atheist. so is Rue. but the idea of keeping one's ties, having them influence a later lifetime is appealing to her. that at some point, Rue would find peace. she doesn't even really care about herself as much as she does Rue coming to terms with things]

"Oh, um. The first book is called The Hobbit. It's my personal favorite since it's self-contained and makes for such good bedtime reading. But he wrote more books, three of them in a saga called The Lord of the Rings. And his son published his unpublished writings after he passed on."

"You definitely should, they're amazing. Ground-breaking, really. And some big literary journal did this poll, asking what the best book of all time was and they got "The Lord of the Rings" as the popular vote. And took the vote again because they were like, 'no way should some fantasy book be the best of all time,' and got the same answer."

She takes a sip of her tea as well. It's easy for her to get animated when the topic of great books was concerned.

"-oh! I am?," she asked, eyes wide. "I am. I...wow. I feel good! Like, really good! Not dark at all!"
