You teach sports to the children? [ that's actually really sweet ] That's very nice of you.

[ aw, shucks. it’s nothing! ]

People could use some fun around here. And I don’t want to get rusty! [ even if he has to play alone, sometimes. with his chicken. ] We have a mascot and everything for the teams. And I teach adults that want in, too. Me and my friend, actually!

[ it’s an inoffensive gesture, but shōyō still tosses the ball he’s holding gently at the other, at an easy arch to catch. ]

Mascot-- [ oh, a ball is coming at him. kaneki grabs it easily, before he glances at the bird ] Is that your mascot?

What— [ with a quick glance down at what he’s pointing to, shōyō adds his own question, a little surprised: ] Tamago?

[ let him scoop this little guy right up—! ]

Well, one of them is a cat with a bandana, but that isn’t a bad idea! Would you join . . . The Sun Chicks?

[ that didn’t sound right. next! ]

Wait, no. The Hot Wings.

Kaneki chuckles after ] Do all the animals play in it, too?

[ that was a good one. shoyo grins at the camaraderie at gives an approving thumbs up! ]

Not yet! It's why I wanna teach 'em. [ —okay, there's one more reason. ] And so I can always have a buddy on the other side.

[ volleyball, unfortunately, is impossible to play without a team. it'll be very difficult to play a one-on-one, but at least it'll still be possible to hit some tosses or, maybe even spikes. ]

[ he glances back at the chick and then smiles] Ah, it does sound like a good idea.

I've never seen an animal like him, though. [ what is it, even? Some creature from Trench?]

He’s pretty special— [ with the whole different look. well, maybe not too different? it’s just an orange chicken with, maybe, some really strange behavior for a chicken. ] Wanna see ‘em cough fire?

Excuse me, what? [ WHAT DO YOU MEAN. COUGH FIRE??? ]

[asas]

[ suddenly, shoyo looks too excited to pass that opportunity up. ]

Alright, watch this, [ and then, down to his little friend: ] Tamago! [ so literally . . . "egg"??? ] Do the boof thing!

[ !!! the torchic seems pumped and proudly puffs out his chest, takes in a deep breath— and uses ember on the sand! please be careful not to get some on your shoes. because it can. ]

[ oh it's called Tamago. of course it is.

kaneki watches in silence and and suddenly there is fire? The chicken breathes fire?! Naturally, Kaneki steps away because what the hell, and after he looks at Torchic for a moment, he looks back at Shoyo, as if expecting an explanation ]

[asas]

[ this is the only explanation you are ever going to get. tamago looks so proud of himself, too— ]

[ mouth opens.

mouth closes.

mouth opens again ]

Your bird breathes fire?! [ WHAT ]

[asas]

Hah! Right?! [ he pumps both fists up! ] That's what I said! You're awesome, Egg!

[ the little guy deserves a good scoop up; shoyo delivers praise like a proud parent, and the torchic just looks— absolutely encouraged. he's so small, but that doesn't matter! he's talented! he can do whatever he wants if he's determined to do it! he'll make sure this little chicken buddy of his grows up to be confident and successful. holding him close to his chest and a lean toward kaneki, he whispers: ]

Pss, pet him!

[ he is a chicken that breathes fire!!!
Well, Kaneki can't complain when he has a dog that eats blood pollution.

When Shoyo tells Kaneki to pet the chick, he blinks a little before quickly nodding ] Y-yeah, of course. [ his hand pets the top of Torchik's head with a smile ] You did a good job.

[ please don't set things on fire, tho ]

[ the chick’s eyes are express enough to fill with palpable joy. and just seeing it is the cutest thing, you know? shōyō has to grin, too. ]

You sure you don’t want to play a round with us, while you’re here?

[ it is very cute! Kaneki does like birds, he used to take care of a cute cockatiel back home too ]

Ah... well, it's hard to say no if he looks at me like that. [ THERE YOU GO TORCHIK, you won ]

[ kaneki has not only made the evening of one bird, but two! shoyo grins from ear to ear, puts his buddy on the ground so that torchic can sprint around happily, all while having the chance to spin a volleyball in his hands! ]
