[ he is gathering sports balls here; with one already in his lap, he’s got just enough room to scoop in one more stray. he hasn’t touched one of these in months! months. ]

That too! [ if it wasn't ever apparent, shōyō is somewhat predictable when it came to his likes and good news. ] The orphanage has teams for the kids now, me and a friend are putting it together and giving classes— he showed up a little after the, [ he snaps his fingers because he doesn’t remember the name, like, he somewhat does, but should he try to pronounce it? simplicity, instead, says— ] Godzilla.

That's good? I don't know what a 'Godzilla' is— the sea monster?

[That's easy, let's call it that. He's learning so much from this conversation, including about Godzillas and also that there's an orphanage, ah- he really hasn't gotten out much in his tenure in Trench, huh.]

I'm glad you can spend time with your friend. Are the kids any good at sports?

[ yesyesyes, his nodding head says: sea monsters. that gives him a wonderful idea, though? they can have team godzilla. oikawa would freak out. ]

Some are pretty promising! [ it’s mean to say “others suck”, shōyō knew he hated it when he was in high school. now, imagine kids—?! they need all the encouragement they could get. ] But they’re all learning fast. They’ll do great.

[ speaking of which, ]

You know, we could always use a manager?

[Ah yes, "some are pretty promising," he's heard that sentiment before. Granted, he's heard it about young adepts, occasionally about the trainees in the Spire... good to know that all subjects have that same polite way of saying some kids just suck at what they're passionate about. He hums, nodding; some of them are promising.]

Do you? Alright.

.......oh, he hears it, hold on-] Oh; me? I'm not— I don't know anything about sports. My full breadth of knowledge of athleticism is 'sometimes, train about it'.

[ it is time for shōyō to sell his fish, and by god will he try his best. ]

It involves a lot of reading, writing, organization, and you never have to sweat.

[ hmm?? hmmmmm??? ]

It can be, like— a hobby!

[don't look at him like that, he can't say no to earnestness or (absent) children?? stop???]

Well— maybe a test run. I can't make any promises; I have a lot of personal projects, ones without a set schedule.

[ who isn't to say shoyo isn't the one manifesting childish wonder at mach-speed—?! shoyo puts out a finger for each subject he can think of, by the way: ]

The rules of volleyball, stuff about centers of gravity, balance, muscle building, human kinetics . . .

[ he hopes "human kinetics" sounds smart. because it does. to him. ]

I know the basics of all of that besides the rules of volleyball.

[Ah, so he's doomed to do this thing, isn't he. One does not simply do necromancy without, mm, becoming familiar with the finer details of how bodies work and move; he'll try to keep it less creepy, when it's sports for children.

"Human kinetics" sounds slightly goofy, but he's not going to crush any dreams. Very smart, bud.]

Alright— I'll give it a try.

[ you know what happens when you make the sun’s day? the sun shines brightly. shōyō is beaming and pumping both arms up in the air in ecstatic victory. ]

Yes! [ one, because the kids will be ecstatic to know they have a real life (part time) manager. two, because shōyō gets to spend more quality time with his wayward-now-found nerd friend. ] I’ll get you the stuff you’ll need! They’re gonna love you there!

[aaaaa okay, he's in, he's a sucker.]

Alright, just let me know. I'll be around— for real, this time.

[Haha... yeah, don't think about the last time he wasn't around, he's in it to win it now. Surely just managing a bunch of children will be safe from sea monsters.]

By the way, how do you feel about fireworks? [actually, he thinks he can guess, so,] D'you want to come to a fireworks party?

[ yourself correct the human firecracker seems very pleased about the prospect of a firework party, like he’s the one about to burst. to contain that, he starts tossing the ball in his lap over his head, using his fingers to set every time it comes down. ]

Can I bring friends?

[Palamedes should not be surprised someone would ask before just showing up with their friends in tow, but maybe he's too resigned to that possibility coming true if he pointedly doesn't invite one half of a particular household, soon. Ahem. He blinks.]

Sure. Well, how many? So I gather enough supplies; obviously, there's plenty of space.

[ shōyō has to count, on his fingers. luckily, one of the people is the one in cahoots with pal, so that should already be covered despite not knowing. and if that were true, then lazarus wouldn’t be a neglected name. there’s oikawa. ]

Three— Is three alright? [ actually— ] Three and a half. There’s my chicken.

[ you heard that right. ]

[sorry what]

What? No. Don't bring a chicken to a field full of explosives. Make it three.

[He'd think this was being a little harsh if not for it being a chicken, a creature he is certain will not enjoy the sights and sounds of fireworks. Shoyo? Bud? Please be reasonable.]

[ if only they all knew he wasn’t an actual chicken— well, shōyō knew, but how to put them into very mature, intellectual words? no, he’s fired up. and as much as he has grown— ]

But he breathes fire!

[ he’s still got so much energy, he’s gone back about five, ten years. ]

[a fire-breathing anything at a party with fireworks--]

That's— worse. You hear how that's worse, right?

[This is the how many fingers am I holding up incident all over again. Shoyo? No fire chickens??]

I don't think uncontrolled sources of fire are great for this party, that's all.

Okay— okay, yeah, but no, just listen, just listen for a sec—

[ while gesturing to “hold on, hold on”, just let him get his unruly thoughts together into a selling point—! ]

He breathes fire . . . When you tell him to.

[Is that better? Is it? Palamedes has to ask himself, does he trust Shoyo not to ask a chicken to breathe fire just because, at this party?

No. Not really.]

Right. Well. Anyway, I don't think animals should come. It's not like I can stop you, but I am strongly advising against it.

[ not convincing, huh. he feels bad for his little buddy, the feathery chicken one all alone at home, but . . . after a moment of intense reflection, shoyo claps his hands against the ball in his lap with conviction. ]

I won't go against your best advice.

[ maybe picanha could keep raw egg (yes, that is pretty much his name) company back home! if shoyo is strong enough to resist the sad, teary eyes of one dope chicken. as a show of truce, shoyo extends his hand to shake. ]

[Hmm. Well, he'll accept this. He reaches over to shake his hand, very seriously. This is a legitimate contract, do not sneak in chickens, please.]

I like it. You said three- [and that's the half, so,] Anyone I know?

[He's not, like, vetting people's plus ones (or plus threes), but maybe he lowkey wants to confirm they're not more chickens. Ahem.]

[ after getting pal to be a manager for children's volleyball during his spare time, it is the least shoyo can do: listen to his good ol' pal, pal. once their hands clap briefly together, the contract is sealed. those who break it will suffer the consequences. ]

Well— Paul's gotta be there, [ there went one finger, ] Tooru, my roommate, [ a second finger, ] and— Lazarus!

[ the third and final name is said with a little more enthusiasm than the other two. either way, the truth is out: they are not chickens. ]

[oh thank god none of them are chickens. or at least, he hopes this Tooru is not a chicken, but he'll have to trust in Shoyo's serious handshake.]

Paul is coming, and he is bringing sweets. I've already asked him. Your roommate is welcome; I'm going to assume you speak to Lazarus more frequently than I do, [from that little oomph of enthusiasm, whoa!!] considering I've not had time to speak to him since...

[Well. Since.]

But he's welcome too, of course. Invite him.

You gotta talk to him, then! If there’s sweets, he’s definitely gonna come.

[ then, as in, the fireworks bonanza! shōyō is lit to already know that paul is on the list of attendees, and tooru equally so— his eyebrows are lifted and his smile doesn’t look like it could fit on his face if he were to truly let loose. ]

When’s it gonna be, huh?

[The earnest delight... Palamedes gives him a quick smile, glad of it; hopefully this field and fireworks party won't be a complete disaster, and everyone will enjoy mucking around with explosives. And snacks.

Separately, he'd like to think. Maybe he'll ward off the snack area, if it becomes a problem.]

I don't know. Soon; when these portals and butterflies go away, so we're not interrupted. When do you need me to meet your... children's sports team?

How about . . . [ it doesn’t take too long to think about it; palamedes has his own life and things to do— the rest of his thought is out loud: ] I can send you a read to get started, then you can come by any day at 4pm! I’ll let them know by tomorrow too, and I’ll show you around so you can get to know the place, first. Deal?

[ this is so . . . exciting. he can’t wait to take pictures of pal and the gang of kids! ]
