"Bummer for him," Amara clearly does not feel bad for him at all. She is very fond of her snap judgements and doing acrobatics to make sure she is right, all the time. "I guess you like that other guy he mentioned far more?"
A beat passes, and her eyes widen when she remembers exactly what Cal had said, talking about surviving something.
"Oh, I... belatedly realise that might be a hard question. Never mind!"
Rose grinned. "Yes, I think it was. He seemed awfully fond of showing me off to his other rich friends. He did all but point at me and say 'look at what I've got and you don't!'"
And, yes. Surviving. The anniversary was soon and she wasn't sure she'd want to be around people on that day. Her expression had to have turned thoughtful and maybe sad, too.
"Yes, it's...a hard question for a long list of reasons. Ones I need to find a way to express, but right now it still feels awfully raw."
"He did? I'm sorry. It's a terrible feeling, to be little more than an accessory."
And she wonders if Cal learned his lesson as well as why he'd come to the Steerage survivors, what he would have done if he'd found her there alone. She didn't think she wanted the answers to those questions.
"Thank you. And I have, there's a shop in Cellar Door which has blends I'd never even imagined before. Let's go there."
"No, no, I did it to him. I got married as a statement, not because we loved each other," she says with a sigh. At least, Amara knows, that the guy she married is happy now. She could not hold him down longer and call herself a good person. "It was a bad idea I enabled for very little reason other than my own ego."
Expression marred with regret, she shakes it off.
"Really?" As she follows along, Amara cheers up considerably. "Do tell!"
"Have you fallen in love with him since, or is it still more of a statement?" Because she can see how in time, two people can grow to love each other. Even if it wasn't something that worked for her, not when Cal was so stubborn and thoughtlessly cruel. "I'm sorry. Sometimes...such things happen. Did your society allow you to divorce?"
She sees the regret and can empathize. After all, it was often said "marry in haste, repent at leisure."
"There's one I never thought about, combining lavender with Earl Grey. And when I'd arrived there, I'd never had chai or green tea before and now I'm making my way through both lists of varieties."

That's a rather distressing revelation. Amara will have to take some inventory on her past actions later on, if she remembers.
"We shall not talk about it. Did you find a tea shop that caters to your tastes?"
