[He follows instructions, turning around - it's clear that if it was even a tiny bit deeper it would be a bad cut, but by some miracle it's just barely not. Possibly something to do with the magic the thing was using to transfer injuries, possibly due to his own defenses. It could be said that his body knows better than to get hurt if possible - his physical aether tends to stick together better than most.]

[The question has him tilt his head. It's... a strange question to him, but maybe it wouldn't be if he were more of a lonely man.]

Because I care about them. I carea about other people. Myself? I'm... used to being put in danger. Cut, burnt, beaten... even if I'm not directly fighting a monster I'm the one people look to first to throw into harm's way because I've pulled situations out of bad places before. I could say no... but then someone else would get hurt and the situation probably wouldn't even get resolved.

[ Meanwhile, Shouto opens up a neon yellow glow stick, dips his finger in its contents, and paints an 'x' to mark where he's been. He makes sure to use all the liquid on his finger before closing the glow stick back up and setting it back in its metal container where he has three more tucked away as part of his cave exploring kit after Megumi used a similar idea to track their whereabouts in the caverns below. When he's done, his left hand ignites into a glowing red flame before crouching down at the edge of the river to check it for anything suspicious. ]

There's no fish in the river.

[ He calls out before using his ice to reach the glowing ceiling and get a better look at the-- ]

Oh. They're worms.

[ Bioluminescent glow worms. He reaches out to touch one of the long threads hanging down, not realizing that they're made of urine the glow-worm vomited out. ]

The threads are sticky but they don't seem dangerous. Some bugs are stuck in some of them. Probably the food source for the worms.

[ He lowers himself down on the ice, touching down and setting a left hand to melt it. In the process, he removes any of the sticky material still on his hand. When he's done, the ice reduced to nothing, he turns back to Touya. ]

Are you coming too?

[ Meaning, he's most definitely coming down this way. Touya can join him if he wants. ]

[ he snorts, taking a quick second to eye his surroundings again. it's more of a habit than anything. he's been attacked in bars before, you see. ]

Not really concerned with how you acquired it. Even if you told me, I'd have no way of knowing if it was the truth.

[ he's stolen some shit in his day—out of necessity, mainly, but he has no room to talk about how shoplifting is bad.

he crosses his arms. the determination only intensifies. ]

I heard something about "disinfecting wipes."

[ of all the ridiculous things to say in such a serious tone. what a fucking weirdo. ]

[touya notices they glow stick, wondering if that's something from their homeworld (or someone's) or if it's something that was crafted from trench resources. either way, it's not blood, so shouldn't be problematic to stick it on walls. while his way won't be glowing for as long as shouto's, it'll be a lot easier to notice with light and has far less chance of getting somehow wiped off. who knows what's down here and licks along the walls? with his own mark done, touya descends into the lower tunnel, leaving his omen to rest since the light down here is enough without it.]

None you can see. [don't make generic statements, shouto. especially when looking at one patch of a river they don't even see the ends of. dabi tilts his head back to watch his brother escalate himself to the ceiling. worms?]

... gross.

[here he thought it was moss along needle-like stalactites. (and no, he doesn't know what shouto's poking either.) now he's less inclined to stand under them when he notices the drippy threads move with the poke. at least it doesn't seem to be melting the younger man's flesh off his finger.]

I'm right here.

[indicating his own presence. the question is, which direction to go? the river goes and comes different routes. the continuation of the river is far more well lit than the potential origination point...]

[it's more that it's red and inflamed rather than oozing blood like a gash of this sort would've suggested. bleeding in this world is bad... but without it gushing all over the ground, patching it up is made a lot easier. he has to judge whether or not to suture it, but since it's not badly cut, dabi opts for ointment, salve, and bandages to hold it close together and heal. another wind of gauze around it will keep the doctored area sheltered.

guess he'll rely on the man's magic and whatever else is going on with him to do the lion's share of the healing.]

So ya some kinda human shield. [it earns a wry scoff.] That's an idiotic way to live life.

[should he be wasting his medical supplies on someone who's simply going to jump in the way of a proverbial bullet again? now he regrets it.]

Hey, that crystal thing ya used earlier. [on a different topic.] How's it work?

[an experience they share. though dabi's not afraid to leave the entire bar he gets attacked in burning up in flames as he walks out. he'd prefer not to; this is an optimal place, after all.]

[he can take that comment a few ways, making assumptions about this guy. already from the way he carries himself, dabi's getting thoughts... he's direct, says he's not digging, carries himself strong, despite that tired-looking face he's got his attention sharpened around him... something else they share.]

Yeah. I got some. [kills 99.9% of bacteria and germs. fear the 00.1% that is immune...] Germaphobe?

[he's seen weirder.]

[ He looks down the river in one direction and then the other. One has more light than the other meaning he won't have to use his quirk and possibly disturb whatever ecosystem is down here. ]

I'm going to follow the river his way. [ He points out. ] It's better lit and there's enough room to walk alongside the current.

[ With that, he secures the backpack with the breathing gear once more, before heading down the trail of blue lights that remind of the Milkyway at night. ]

It's... well. I started out my adventuring career as a nobody. Now I'm the one they turn to in order to slay gods and save the world. I earned my reputation, but it means everyone relies on me. Or did, back in my world.

[It's not that he's bitter, nor does he regret his lot in life... but he is tired.]

The job stone? It's -

[Gods, how to put it simply?]

Where I'm from even memories are made up of the same sort of substance that everything else is. Those can be stored inside of a crystal if it's prepared the right way, and those memories can help someone learn techniques faster than they would if they were just studying them on their own.

They can also carry equipment to allow for near-instant switching of gear, as you saw.

[dabi's curious about the source of the water, but considering the lack of light and going upstream has more difficulty than following the flow, not to mention the potential of finding where the water empties... he agrees with shouto.]

If it empties into an underground lake, we're fucked.

[trapped to some degree. as well as suggesting a very dangerous foundation for whatever land might be above that lake. then again, it could merely wind itself out to the ocean and spill out there.

he follows after his brother, dismissing wolf for the time being.]

There's a fine line between bein reliable and bein a doormat people simply make use of. Keep spreadin yourself out so thin and there won't be anythin left.

[if he's tired, then he's got no one else but himself to blame, if that's indeed what his life had entailed. then again, dabi's an extremely jaded and cynical person, so his advice is stilted in selfishness. probably noticeable by now.]

Magic.

[that's what it is. though the notion of memories stored and then used to learn something is an interesting concept. it'd beat training because you could simply use someone else's training to immediately know. (whether that also conditions your body and mind since you skipped the physical and mental experience of training... who knows.)

gear switching, however, has its own advantages.]

How much equipment can ya store in it?

I have rebreathers for that scenario. [ Looks back at his brother. ] Enough for both of us.

[ Since he brought extras because he's a good little hero who always tries to be prepared. And down the river they go! Shouto's pace is slower than normal probably because he keeps looking up, fascinated by the glowing worms that manage to carve out an epic scene that rivals the cathedrals of Rome. Every once in a while, he'll take out his glow stick and mark the wall of the cave with an 'x'. He'll mostly stay quiet, not one to start up conversations, only speaking up when there's a new feature to point out. ]

Oh. The river is wider here.

The ceiling is getting higher.

I think I see an open space up ahead.

[ His steps never hurry. He walks with a purpose following the diminishing bank of the river, only three feet wide now, until it opens up into a large open cavern. The entrance they take is one of many. From their vantage point, more openings can be seen leading to this cavern leading one to believe it might be significant, at least enough to explore a little, so Shouto crosses through the shallow river that's only a few feet deep, and starts exploring. ]

I'm going to check the top of the hill.

Think I'll stay dry.

[spelunking is one thing. swimming around in an underwater lake? that's going a bit too far for his exploratory wants. self-preservation is a thing and dabi doesn't like to take too many risks unless he's assured success. in most cases...

once he realizes the worms aren't going to be dripping on them like some kind of disgusting slime rain, he's more at ease walking down the tunnel the river's carved away over who knows how long a time. when shouto stops to mark the walls, touya likewise draws further on the little notebook, a rudimentary mapping system that consists little more than circles and lines to indicate branches and routes taken. plus burning marks on the wall opposite shouto's glowsticks.

he keeps his silence, noting the decreasing size of the river. somewhere in his mind, he wrangles up lessons from his childhood about nature and stuff. smaller rivers mean less time it's been here. probably carving its way through the rocks. but that stops when the large cavern shows up and he frowns at the severe number of paths.

shit.]

Ya see anything move, send up a flare.

[touya heads to the opposite side of the room, opting to walk past all the different entrances that lead out of the chamber. looking for any signs people have been here. he knows they're not the only ones exploring these caves, especially since there are things in here to find and keep.

case in point, a pile of rocks beside one mouth that obviously was not naturally made (though certainly more respectful to nature than you two idiots painting and burning the walls...)]

Someone's been down this one. They left a marker.

[ooc: got it! i shall unleash some plans~]

[he carried shouto back home and cremated your ass instead of leaving you to rot for the wolves. grateful enough.

the blink and nod at least give him some indication that allen and he are indeed from the same kind of "earth" after all. similar continents and countries even if they're from different times and types of societies. interesting.]

Wouldn't know. [who's ever heard someone speaking japanese with a scottish accent? dabi obviously doesn't know allen enough to call him out on bullshitting his backstory, so he takes it as current truth unless disproved otherwise later. as for the gas station question, gas stations are most often connected to some kind of general store. has he ever SEEN a gas station? it's not pumping hydrogen into a damn airship!]

Medicine from worlds that don't rely on mashin up plants into pastes, feedin mercury into your tea, and pourin tonic down ya throat to cure anythin. [is that a bit more in line with the medieval side of things or still carrying some weight in regards to some 18th century steampunk world. probably the longest string of strange words touya's said to him in the waking world.

ya know he's gonna keep calling him "priest" just because he knows allen chafes at it.]

Yeah, those. [lifting a finger and pointing to indicate the priest correctly assessed when sorts of medical supplies he has. as for wounds, he's got gauze and bandages as well as antibacterial ointments and creams. so another check there.] Not sure I got anythin copper, but I ain't plannin on tradin away things just so they can be destroyed on purpose.

[he'd rather keep the flashlights, lanterns, cameras, kitchen aids, batteries and shit for people who put more value on them than breaking them down for experiments and pieces parts. no offense, but come on. as for the clothes... does allen really want to be introduced to the thing known as jeans and denim with t-shirts?]

Got towels and washcloths. Clothes are more for people from my time. The sort of things Shouto and his group would be familiar with. Though I already had someone get real excited about them. [enough she stole some for herself while helping touya shove his ill-gotten gains out the portal hole.

but finally it does come down to the other subject, that of payment. obviously a trade's a trade and he's into this for barter rather than asking people to stab their fingers on the nearby pin for blood. allen's right about that.]

Nah, I don't want that crap. [sure it has its uses, but he'd rather steal if it's gonna be required.] I'm lookin for stuff that'd be equal or better in exchange. Ya want somethin to deal with fevers, bring me somethin that helps with corruption. Ya want a torch [flashlight] then I want one of those lunar orbs. [he waves his hand in a dismissive way.] For examples. [those obviously aren't set trades. he mostly wants to break even in trades.

and here his eyes narrow on allen, as if the conversation went from flippant to shady. which it does.]

And I'll also exchange for favors. I'll give ya stuff so long as later on I can call in a favor from ya... One for one.

You do the same.

[ Up the hill, he goes, staying in view of Touya. The light from the glow worms is enough to light his way so he doesn't feel the need to use his own quirk. From this vantage point, he can see several openings but none make a particular impression on him, at least not from what he can see. Looking around he spots something odd in the river proper. ]

There's something near the river. I'm going to check it out.

[ He tells his brother before going down the hill and disappearing from view. He heads down to the river where it's gotten a lot bigger, no longer shallow. The closer he gets the better the can make out what he saw from the top. ]

Touya! There's a boat here.

... I know. And I've seen what happens when someone gets too caught up in their role. It's not pretty.

[He's been trying to be kinder to himself. It's... a slow process. But here? No one's expecting him to be a hero. There's a reason he set his network username as justanadventurer - that's all he wants to be here.]

[... Even if he still has that urge to be a hero... he needs to take it easier. He needs to slow down. It's hard, when there's so much to do and to learn... but he's trying.]

[He nods at Dabi's assessment.]

Basically.

It's enough to cover your whole body, including accessories. Magical enchantments can be tied to things like bracelets or rings. But you can only store one set - the space inside isn't that large.

[yeah, yeah. if by "flare" shouto means simply torch the damn thing.

after combing the perimeter of the chamber, it comes to light there are only three tunnels that have been marked by any signs of recent intelligence going through. one with the rock pile and the other with something that's akin to chalk marks. but before he has time to go down one of those tunnels, shouto calls him and touya's attention swings back.

"something" near the river could be anything, but he shoves his hands into his pocket and heads up the hill, then down to follow after him. the river's gotten bigger, deeper... does that mean there were two and they merged? the hell's up with this underground system? but it's the second call that has him coming up behind his little brother.]

Either some Sleepers dragged that all the way here or we're not alone in this place...

[it had to have just recently been set up. there's no way it's been down here since forever. unless this isn't the first time trench has dropped holes all over the ground.]

[dabi finishes up the wrapping around the man's stomach and leans back, blue flames peeling back from his fingertips all the way off his wrist in a way to burn away anything that might've been clinging to his skin. between the burns on his back and the laceration across his stomach, those two injuries seem to be the worse that nara'a's taken. some rest and whatever magic the man wants to throw at the injuries should be enough to heal it up.

there is a use for people who don't mind getting themselves wrecked for someone else over and over. they make for good shielding and their bleeding hearts are apt resources for distraction. though in a world like trench, where the idea of hero and villain is shoved onto the back burner in lieu of everyone trying to survive... such a person's just going to get themselves trashed.

but that's not his problem.]

So that armor's only in that stone. And somethin for water would be in another one.

[ Sasuke goes to hang the lantern he'd been carrying off of his stump so he can flick it back on, pulling it into his hand and holding it up so he can look slightly ahead of the path. Even if it alerts some kind of monster, at least he'll be able to see what's charging at them a few seconds earlier this way. ]

Hopefully whatever they're trying so hard to hide is still down here.

[ Otherwise this is all one hell of a waste of time. ]

[dabi notices the man's missing arm when he takes the lantern off, but says nothing about it. hardly a thing to comment on after coming from the world he has. the lantern's light shining further down the tunnel helps, though there's no sign of any movement or disturbance yet.]

Heard from some others they found bloodstone tools. Helps ya craft that shit better.

[that's one thing at least.]

Hn. Seems like overkill to hide a couple of tools.

[ Not to say that he wouldn't try and get some for himself, of course. Or at least bring one up to give to someone else who was able to do those sorts of crafts. Still, the beasts and the traps all seem like they should be to hide something more valuable.

But maybe they aren't. Who knows. ]

... Not that it would surprise me if it turns out this place was just designed by some sadist having fun.

That's about the right of it.

[He doesn't really have anything for water, really. Maybe he should get something.]

[Then again, he's not sure swimming in the ocean here is a great idea.]

[It's not something he expected, certainly. The other doesn't strike him as a healer or even someone who does 'concern' very much.]

Not if the tools can help make somethin really valuable a lot easier.

[making bloodstones usually requires a lot more experience and paying people to do it for you. to take an expert craft and allow novices and curious folk to start moving into that important niche? that's dangerous for the ones who control the skill. especially if people with no skill think they have skill and fuck it up with tools that are supposed to help.]

Ya think these caves are natural or were they made?

[because if someone spent all this time burrowing this far underground all under trench...]

Hn. [no dabi wouldn't suggest swimming in the ocean in this place. it's ominous enough simply walking the beaches on the farther shores. still, there's so much fish (ugh) here, that obviously people feels safe enough (or driven enough) to go out and get their catch.

he pushes himself up to go set his supplies back on the bathroom counter. then pulls out a bottle, pops the top, dumps a pill into his hand, caps it again with his thumb, and puts it back in the bag. back to nara'a.]

Whatcha want for it?

[blunt, as he hands him the pill. painkiller.]

[He eyes the pill carefully... but he's reasonably sure he's not going to get poisoned here. He swallows it and winces as he feels it go down. Probably should have gotten some water from his pack, but no point in trying that now.]

[The question of payment... right. He shouldn't have expected this would be out of the goodness of someone's heart. He scratches at his cheek for a moment, thinking.]

Could make you some clothes, if you want.

[well there's a sink right over there, but who knows if the water's good or not? it works at least. the tub itself has a faucet despite it being free-standing in the middle of the bathroom. makes it easier to clean and keeps it separate from the floor and walls. since things can get a little messy in there... blood-wise. that's the point of it.

truthfully dabi isn't expecting "payment" for this thing? after all, the guy did get the demon off him. but if he can spin it as a favor he could be repaid for, hell if he's going to knock the option down.]

What d'ya mean?
