june catch-all
Who: viktor and others, open to all with some closed prompts in comments
What: june catch-all, some tdm prompts
When: june
Where: various
content warning; terminal illness, arcane season 1 spoilers
misc lab stuff and various fruits.
[viktor's lab in the willful machine is usually left unlocked when he's working inside. friends or acquaintances have likely been told they're welcome to stop by if they like, either to say hello or to get help with whatever a vaguely sketchy lab could handle. of course someone he doesn't know can just walk in too or knock. maybe there's a sudden downpour and that ajar door is tempting? go for it.
the lab has been slowly filling with all sorts of nonsense on the various tables- lasers! tasers! some weird machine hooked up to a blood gem? it is not unlikely to be walking by and hear some minor booming noise and either a curse in czech or a satisfied 'a-ha!' feel free to investigate.
this month there's something else too, a bowl full of fruit. all the fruits mentioned in the tdm in fact, there to be tested on though it looks more like they're just for guests if people are unaware there's some weird shit going on.]
Just a moment, make yourself at home. [he might say to guest. that would include eating some fruit, right? enjoy. probably not the raw lemon though, that's weird.]
[ooc; if you want to memshare i am game, my only hard limit on memories is no suicide stuff please. self sacrifice is fine! feel free to ask to make sure one is okay. if you'd like a viktor memory let me know any hard limits and what sort of memory you might prefer!]
gaze and time loops.
[having lungs mostly working for the moment is pretty great, in viktor's humble opinion. it means walking around the trench doesn't come with the risk of coughing up blood and attracting beasts and generally having a bad time, along with added perks like not getting so easily winded and going for longer. it also means he finds himself out longer than he usually would, which maybe isn't the best, as it turns out.
for example, making his way home through gaze and hearing the chilling cry of a beast, sighing and trying to make his way around what turns out to be the wrong corner. maybe that's where he sees your character before the snarling of a too close beast starts in earnest.
and then snap! they're both back about an hour, where they passed on the street. the look viktor gives is somewhere between resigned and 'fuck this, actually.'] There is a term for this. 'One of those days,' I think.

Almost lost for words. The marrying of technology and magic is just - ]
This is incredible- it's a game changer [still watching the tools float effortlessly. Unable to take his eyes off of them.] Almost like a barrier that comforts and keeps the beast contained, until they can be exorcised? [Looking towards Viktor, his tone is more enthusiastic than usual despite the dark circles underneath his eyes. There is curiosity and an iota of awe that slips as his mind begins to theorize.
Have you ever considered mixing the bloods together, or powering a machine with different types of bloodgems for dual effects?
[It seems logical and if Viktor can already make something this impressive, imagine what other things could be made through his technology.
no subject
So a machine that can tap into paleblood should be able to, at the very least, create a field that would lull a beast to sleep. My hope is we can expand upon that, that the field can soothe and open beasts up to a better state of mind and ease the process of exorcism.
[he starts moving a little, gesturing to the muffins.] Please have some if you would like- and yes, it is a matter I am incredibly interested in, mixing gem types. Imagine the versatility! It would be like building a spell, piece by piece, covering for weaknesses with the strengths of other gems.
[he does notice those dark circles by the way, making note of it. probably why he gestured to the muffins, not exactly a cure all but a muffin never hurt, right?]
no subject
[As he's offered the Muffin.]
Thanks. [Weary at first, taking the muffin to his nose. Despite being a judge at the bake off, sweets are not really his thing. But this particular muffin smells mild. Going in for a bite. Light and quite pleasant. He then proceeds to quickly peel the rest of the muffin top off, holding and eating it like a cookie.
A beat taking everything in.]
This makes me wonder what sleeper blood evolved from. [ The native Trench folk don't seem to carry it.] Could each blood type be related to a different source, or maybe the same source with varying probabilities of getting any specific type? [ His mind always returns to the question of why.]
no subject
[he flips the switch off for now, moving over to gesture to what looks like a leather glove of sorts, with some machinery and the same slot for a bloodstone.] I've been working on a more manual manipulation of the powers as well. With darkblood this should be able to send a force that pushes away objects and attackers, creates a barrier. With some tweaking I think it could be used to lift rubble telekinetically, or the injured.
[ah, science. and luckily the muffin is mostly made with nuts rather than sweet (or cursed) fruits, just a little nor cursed lemon to it. enjoy a little paleblood baking corruption lowering as he nods to the thanks and considers that question.]
I've wondered similar- there is a great deal at least between paleblood and the moon. What does that mean, and what does it mean for the other types? Sometimes I wonder if coldblood is not tied to the sea in turn in some way. Elemental, fickle in it's form.
no subject
If you use a coldblood gem you might be able to make clothes that are repellent to fire and ice. If you ever need any, I can donate.
[Forgetting about electricity, as it is an ability he has not figured out how to use yet. He's almost sure Viktor's probably thought about this already, however earlier when he was looking at the darkblood gem, this exact thought crossed his mind.
Finishing up the bottom piece of muffin, making sure not a single crumb hits the ground, he looks towards Viktor. It's so refreshing and new to see this kind of work. Indulging in a passion for the greater good. His face remains neutral, as a fond memory passes behind his mind's eye. A small smile. ]
You and your partner's ideas and inventions can improve so many lives here.
[ Stated more like a thank you. Hope is not a word he uses, but this type of progress feels closest to a tangible reality he can wish for.
A cutting pain jolts through the back of his neck. Not reacting outwardly, his hand quickly rubs the back of his neck before reaching down into his shadow. Pulling out a canister and two worn blue yunomi cups, placing them on a nearby table.
Would you like some tea?
no subject
[so megumi's offer? useful. and of course-] If there's anything you think could be helpful with your work allow me to make it for you. I think by next month we should be ready to start field testing, if you were interested.
[there's more excitement there- ah, progress. it's been a bit of a time with it all but it's very satisfying to see it all come together.
but that offer has him pulling up a stool to take a seat at the table.] I would, thank you. [and a pause.] You seem quite exhausted, Fushiguro.
no subject
I hunt at night, and it's been more difficult than usual lately. [ Staying vague while maintaining to tell the truth. He's awful at lying directly and rarely does so.]
[ Taking the metal canister, he grips the container with both hands. After about a minute, a faint misty steam comes off the rim. One hand on top and the other underneath as he carefully supports and fills the cups, focused on not spilling a drop.
Well, I'm glad I can help with that. My blood is easy enough to harvest, [a quick pause] but it makes me really tired when I use it.
[ Or lose it for that matter.]I can collect some over a period of time and donate that way. [ Coldbloods are particularly prone to being drowsy. Having the security of knowing he can rest afterwards is his preferred method of extraction.A light spring aroma fills the air. The concoction is a delicate blend of Ammy's cherry blossoms and green tea. The taste is floral and earthy with a hint of oceanic saltiness. Taking one sip sends some soothing relief down the back of his neck. He motions for Viktor deciding the tea is ready for drinking.
Maybe it's the small yet natural amount of caffeine kicking in, but field testing gets a response! His eyes glance over. ]
I would like that, being able to test the pacifying field would be beneficial to someone who can exorcise, just in case of any malfunctions. [ Not that he thinks it would happen at all, but it's better to be safe and take precautions. Plus new gadgets! Who wouldn't want to test them! ]
no subject
he watches the tea being made, curious and a little surprised it actually smells appealing. he's not really a tea person but he's been learning, given it's the easiest thing to get in the trench.] As long as you do not overexert yourself. My partner is terrible about that, but I suppose he's used to using blood in his world's magic already.
[sigh. still he takes the cup, lets it warm his fingers as he takes a sip. he's always a myriad of aches and pains, from his bad leg, his back, the braces on both. the subtle easing of that comes with a soft sigh.] Oh, this is very good, thank you. Where did you get it?
Yes, frankly I would be grateful if you could give them testruns. Allen and Shouto already will I think, but the more the better. I am planning on making it something you can throw within the beast's range and will activate upon impact with the ground.
I'm sorry idk how this turned into a tl;dr
[ Not wanting to accidently spread misinformation about something so serious. Living in the woods is extremely tolling, but he's learned how to cultivate a few useful skills that he would have otherwise had little experience with back at home.
It's also quiet]Your partner sounds like a great person. You both [gesturing to all the in progress experiments] create very clever and helpful devices. From the looks of it, you know how to work as a team and bring ideas to life. [Stated simply and genuinely.
Where did you get it? Puzzled for a moment. His eyebrows furrow. He doesn't really buy much of anything so it takes him a minute. ]
Oh I made it using the cherry blossoms from the sacred tree at the Farther Shores. The tree itself has anti-corruption effects. So I came up with a brew and take it with me in case someone needs it. The base is a green tea blend and the higher notes are pickled cherry blossoms.
[ Taking another slow sip. Comfort levels increase, as his pain eases. It's funny, Megumi isn't much of a tea drinker either, preferring black coffee for his caffeine fix. But this drink is nostalgic to say the least-]
Back at home this is a special drink we have that marks the beginning of spring.
[A beat. Pulled away from the thoughts of before and brought back to the here and now. The Trench.]
Close proximity is how he imagines the tool to work best. Opening up and causing some invisible energy to be released, at the beginning of a battle.]
As soon as they're ready let me know and I'll give them a run.
tl;dr is the best, never apologize <3
he might have to make sure to have food around for megumi regardless, when he visits. that is simply being a good host, isn't it?
his smile softens a touch at that, about his partner.] Palamedes is a brilliant mind, that I can easily say. He cares about doing right by the natives as well as the sleepers, which has been a goal of ours. [and not always shared, sadly.
the bit about the tea has him glancing at it, thoughtful.] Would you mind sharing the recipe? Sanctuary has one of the trees, it would be good to have something like this for those who come for low grade corruption clearing. [a pause then with a faint huff.] That and I rather like it. In truth? I miss coffee terribly. Making do with tea has been a challenge.
[so he feels you. that it's a drink from his memory makes it a little more interesting still.
and he gets a nod as he sips his tea. megumi is pretty much top of his list with allen of who gets called first about them. people who viktor really thinks can make a difference with this.]
no subject
Perking up at the mention of liking the brew. It's rare he gets to make something for someone else.]
I'll send you the recipe through the network.
[ Although the taste may vary depending on which green tea is used! He's very picky about the taste, taking great care to prepare his own which airs on the salty side.]
Coffee. [ Like one of pavlov's dogs his eyes widen.] That's something I miss too. Tea just doesn't give you the same boost, [ tilting his head to the side] although it's supposed to have more health benefits. [Truthfully tea is something he drinks while winding down, usually before bed. Which unfortunately may not have been the best choice, considering his current state. Rubbing his neck and suppressing a much needed yawn as his eyes drift across the many curiosities in the lab.]
no subject
[his lips quirk at that reaction to coffee- boy does he feel that.] Not at all. I suppose I became far too dependent on it between schooling and work. [a sigh. the true horror of the trench, honestly.
the yawn catches his attention again, though he refrains from fussing. he does remember something though, putting his cup down to ask,] Have you been in the tunnels yet? I have something you might find interesting.
no subject
About a week ago Allen, Shouto and I ended up down there. It's very dangerous. [ To say the least.] We thought it might be the top layer of the catacombs, but I'm not sure if that's right.
[ Eyes quickly scan over Viktor, relieved to see no visible sign of injury, at least from what he can observe outwardly. Satisfied, his hand reaches for another muffin.]
What did you find? [ Curiosity colors his neutral tone and his head tilts just a tad askew to the left. It could be anything really. ]
The energy down there felt like the unusual portals that were opening up a few months back. [ Which reminds him, he too has something to share with Viktor. ]
no subject
My own excursions were largely mundane, thankfully. Certain abilities I have thanks to my blood made the traps easy enough to handle. [he moves to another table, comes back with an old book he offers with a quirk of his lips.]
As soon as I saw this I thought of you. I think you'll find it very interesting indeed. [and a thoughtful pause.] That is true. I found an item from my home as well, which the portals sometimes did.
So sorry for the late response!
We all made it out. [ No urgency in his tone. Eyes hold a steady gaze before shifting towards the cup of tea. The ramifications of their encounter are still being navigated even a full week after. Breaking his concentration as the antiquated book is placed in front of him.
Skimming through a few of the pages his eyes narrow as specific phrases catch his attention. Immediately reaching into his shadow, he retrieves his black leather notebook, and begins writing some of the highlights as well as his thoughts.
His handwriting is dark, neat and small for the most part.
•Continually bringing people out of their universes and into this one
He scribbles something illegible lightly next to it.•The Pthumerian race were the first sentient beings capable of emotion and reason.
Did the old ones lack these traits?? And have always just existed?Being told something exists just because it "always had" isn't an answer Megumi likes to accept. It feels religious and not backed by science. That has him raise an eyebrow. But he is pulled back in when he reads:• Becoming aware of things gave them power over those things, over reality .
This line sticks out. Looking up he points to the sentence. ]What do you make of this? [ He asks but immediately answers himself as he traces a trail of thought. ] I think it could explain how pthumerians so easily change the landscape and manipulate the various trials. This implies that if they have an understanding of the Earth, it would be reasonable to assume they could control and manipulate some of its elements. I say some because- [ Shaking his head back and forth. ] - if they can “will reality” then why haven't they corrected the decayed world Sodder caused?[ Looking up meeting Viktor's gold eyes. ] Maybe they can't do that, and that would imply that they have limitations as well. [ A pause. ]
[ His mind reels as all the new information sends him on a journey of mixed emotions and questions, so many questions. Who are the old ones? And the pthumerian being good and friendly with people?? He needs to see more proof of that. Just looking around, this world was essentially sucked dry when Sodder’s dreams went out of control. If sleepers are still coming through, does that mean she’s still bringing them? And for what, especially if it's destroying the world? And perhaps, the most damning of thoughts. The idea he was ripped away from everything on a whim... it’s messed up.
A sigh. ] It's a lot to process, and this is an incredible find. [ His voice light but his eyes heavy. Although interested in this research, it is times like this, that remind him why he began looking into all of this in the first place. ]
no subject
[it's refreshing to have someone as intent on this as he is- and really, megumi's theories are what started him down this path. so it is easy to wait and sip at his tea, mulling over what he has already read and picked apart on his own. a lot of interesting information, more than he was expecting down there.]
I think this tells us their limitations to a degree- however miraculous their powers they lack some inherent spark of creativity that fuels said powers. There is a way humans, or mortals like humans, think that is the key to unlocking the extent of their capabilities. It is... alarming and fascinating.
[maybe more alarming than anything. he's heard the sad story of julia sodder, this puts it in even further perspective.] It makes me think that each month we are being subjected to trials from the patron, though now it is unclear to me if they mean to put us through it as a pointed use of their power or it is... a stray thought, an influence.
[and a pause. he puts his empty cup down.] And whatever the case it seems to point that we are... fascinations to them, even if they do not ultimately need us. [so worse case they are subjects, insects in glass cages. hm]
no subject
The text said something about imagination, maybe that's part of the spark. [ Jotting that down in his notes. Humanoids tend to be real creative.] I think of imagination more in the sense of breaking what was previously established by going past the boundaries of what you think is possible. Someone once told me to envision a version of myself that exceeds my previous limitations. He said that's the way you can max out your true power and potential. I wonder if that could be applied to pthumerian as well. [ Quiet letting a moment pass finishing off the second muffin.]
I think the trials could be on a more individual basis with some choosing to use their abilities, and others having little control over the effects. The moss king and the tower definitely felt intentional and precise. Ha [ dry and sarcastic smile] It's amazing they don't fight each other over power each month.
[ Eyes wander back to Sodder's name.] If corruption comes from living in a world of fear and bloodshed, then Sodder essentially brought that upon this world before it was the trench, when she drained its energy. [ A pause.] Unless it was born into existence when the pthumerian were created as a result of their own actions and emotions. [Again he's speaking out loud as his mind tries to categorize the new information.
Finishing off the last of his tea. His expression and tone take a more somber turn.]
Do you think there's any way to reverse or pause Sodder’s dream?
no subject
Pthumerians do seem to be wedded to certain concepts. It's presented like a realm they rule over, hope or justice or the like, but I wonder if perhaps they lack the imagination to move beyond familiar grounds. [he muses, considering that bit about boundaries carefully. it's good advice, he thinks, even in merely the philosophical.] A wise man. Are humanoids not at their most impressive when they push boundaries of possibility?
That does make me wonder if this monthly schedule is a matter of universal agreement or they are truly tied to each month. For that matter what of patrons? Is there anything to these blessed days and those we are attached to?
[the question about julia has him leaning back to consider, a long few moments before,] From what I understand her power, or the power of the dream, was so vast she could not control it and little could be done to even put a dent. I fear there's little else I could offer, though it does make me want to ask some of the older here for more.
From what I gather Julia Sodder is a touchy subject though.
no subject
Why do you think that is?
[Megumi's never looked into anything relating to Sodder. His primary focus has been the pthumerian as a whole. But he can't help but to wonder if she's linked to corruption given this new information.
It's somewhat ironic, his fascination with these lesser gods is leading him to conclude they are just as interested in sleepers as he is with them. The idea of a magnifying glass looking down at Earth as a telescope looks up to the cosmos. Both trying to understand each other's universe and differences, while completely overlooking the blaring similarities. Never once seeing the eye behind the scope just missing that vital spark. Communication. ]
[He ponders for a moment, unconsciously rubbing the back of his neck, before circling back to Viktor's previous statement concerning patrons. ]
I've often wondered why we are tied to certain patrons as well. I have Dorothea. She gave me a very cursed "lucky" rabbit's foot about a week before my birthday. I wasn't sure if it was a coincidence or not. [ Shrugging his shoulders with a sort of pursed lip sour expression, thinking back on the "gift."A quick pause.]
Do you know who your patron is?
no subject
probably a good idea to ask some of the people he's met from the dream to get a better idea, but otherwise he shakes his head.] It freed them, but I would not be surprised if it had an effect on the world as well. More corruption, perhaps. It is a matter I will try to look into, and share what I learn when I do.
[it seems to connect to the pthumerians, and honestly? aside from paul megumi is the only person who he's found willing to dive more into all this information, what it means, what it means for them. refreshing, in truth.
he can't help a snort as he says,] Mine is Dorothea as well, as it turns out. Admittedly I have not learned much about her, or what she 'represents.'
I am curious about this gift- what did it do exactly?
1/2
Her gift was a lucky rabbit's foot. Any time I held on to it, I had great fortune while others around me suffered ungodly bad luck. It's why I hardly carry it around, with the exception of the full moon. Under that narrow circumstance it seems anyone who holds the foot receives good favor without any penalties.
[ A pause. Lips flat line and his tone shifts to deadpan.]
She's extremely clever and mischievous from the rare few times I've bumped into her. She frequents the forest area and loves to play games. Think of her as a smart child with incredible power. There is a plethora of lore on her. But no one source can seem to recall her origins.
[ As much as he complains about her, he'd be lying if he said he didn't admire her high regard for animal life. He also empathizes with her survival instincts and tactics. Living off the land is no joke, and she seems to make the best of it.
His eyes rest and lips go back to a more serious expression. The word child triggers his previous thought. ]
2/2
That would be great. You're very practical and I trust what you find will be thorough. [ Eyes unwavering as this is not a statement made frivolously. Putting faith in someone else is something new to Megumi, particularly here in the Trench.]
no subject
A double edged sword. [he snaps his fingers, momentarily pleased at remembering. but anyway.] Do you think there is anything to these patrons and being under them? For example the pair of us, why would we be hers, in a sense, and not another?
[a curious topic, but there is the more depressing one to finish. even though he offers a quirk of the lip at that trust. it is appreciated, largely because he does not think megumi seems the type to offer such trust or statements easily.]
I just hope it can offer some light on what the book says. Tell me, Fushiguro, do you believe that the corruption can be banished from this land entirely? Or do you believe it a natural force that would cause imbalance to lose?
no subject
Some pthumerian, will favor an individual even if they are not their patron. This makes me think that the qualities a sleeper possesses in their original world attracts a specific patron initially, but if the sleeper changes... [ there is a long pause- something between realization and quick repression occurs. ] ... their new energy could appeal to the attention of a different pthumerian.
[ Eyebrow raises. Taking a moment to consider Viktor's question on corruption.] I see it more like an invasive species. It wasn't part of this world originally, but it's here and we have to manage it the best we can. And as far as it being natural, I lean on the side that it is. [ Shifts his gaze to the side before looking forward again.] Back at home, cursed energy was brought into the world through a combination of nature and negative human emotions. It would be illogical to think we could eradicate it completely because the source of where it all stems from will always exist.
no subject
[conjecture though, like so much of this ultimately is. he wonders what trait he and megumi share that appealed to dorothea. surviving, self reliance are probably the answers, though he can't guess them.
and he's more interested in that answer, a nod as he digests it piece by piece.] Cursed energy, is that anything like what I saw you using? [he has been curious about that.] I think I agree. Corruption is too inherent now to sentient beings here. It seems... unfitting to see it as some great beast that can be slain in the same violence that likely made it.
