[ Quietly, he sits down across from him so he can better see him. He'd been serious when he told Endeavor he wanted to save Touya at the hospital. He still doesn't know what that means, but time hasn't changed his outlook. Unlike their father, Shouto wouldn't run away from him.

... An odd question, and one he isn't expecting. ]

He said he knew I was the one... that's all he ever cared about.

[ Much like his personality, his features were pretty bluntly stated. Split perfectly down the center like a chimera. He was an ostentatious piece, even if his personality was more subtle. ]

[ Coming in soon after Dabi's revelation and his conviction at the hospital to save him, Shouto is aware of the war to come but little else. Like all the heroes, he's left preparing for a strike that's likely to come sooner rather than later. His part in it is already set. There was only ever one choice after Endeavor made it clear he couldn't face his progeny in battle, leaving Shouto to face his brother in his stead. Despite what it might seem like, it wasn't obligation that made him accept the inevitable but the need to face the skeletons in their closet head-on. He was prepared to face his brother, not because he was a villain and he a hero, but because he was hurting by himself just like he had been. Having been dragged out of that darkness by Midoriya, he was prepared to do the same for his brother.

A pointed statement. If it was meant to make him uncomfortable, it doesn't work. He's long given up on feeling guilty for what Endeavor did. It took him a long time, but he separated his guilt from his father's actions. Accepting that line, he lets it slide over him, and wash off.

The same is not true with the latter half of his statement. He stares, stunned and a little shaken by that revelation. ]

.... why?

[ Few things can rile up Todoroki Shouto like another Todoroki, older and stronger than him, demeaning his mother like she was of no consequence. Like she wasn't the light of his world, the only one he was ever allowed before she too was taken. A streak of anger bleeds out of him in a flare of red that spills from a bed of red hair. ]

That's not her name.

[ She was human and she loved you the only way she knew how given her circumstances.

Under the influence of the cherry blossom tree, the churning lava pools inside him begin to calm, turning into a gentle roil. His expression settles back into a neutral look, though his fingers pinch at the fabric of his pant leg as his thoughts circle that name instead of her title. ]

Mom tried her best.

[ He adds in defense of their mother, his heart unable to simply let the insult stand unchallenged. ]

We all did. [ Grey and teal settle on his face with the familiar structure and coloring he never caught onto before. ] It wasn't always good enough.
