It had been hard to find a vein. When Keith had finally given in and rolled up his sleeve (yes, he tried arguing again, even getting belligerent at one point due to the malady combined with his own naturally short temper), the black patches were pretty far spread. It made his skin thick and tough to pierce. That, of course, meant the whole thing ended up being more painful when it came time to actually get the needle in for the transfusion.

A few times, he tried to pull it out and had to be physically restrained. As much as he had said he didn't want to change into a monster again, which he didn't, he was also slowly sinking further into that change, so it was harder for him to resist rebelling. This was especially true when it hurt to go along with what they were doing. However, as more of the affected blood was filtered out and replaced, he began to calm down.

By the time they were walking out again, he was thoroughly exhausted, almost dragging his feet to follow along back to the street's surface.

Duty squeezed Keith's shoulder once. What was right often wasn't what was easy. The young man could sleep easier that night knowing at least this one cause of concern, one mode in which he could be used for violence, was removed. No doubt more would come. Trench was a dangerous place, and Sleepers were part of it.

"Good job," he said.

"Heh..." Keith wasn't sure about that, yet. He crossed his arms around himself. "Yeah. Thanks." At least it was done. He stared at the patches on his arms for a moment before rolling his sleeves back down. "The squid stuff... that'll go away with this transfusion thing, right?"

Duty nods. "Everything cursed," he says. Squid stuff isn't always a curse. It isn't always dangerous. That's something else entirely.

It was the cursed version Keith was talking about. He knew the other stuff was just a thing in this place that he was going to have to deal with. He nodded.

"Good."

He took a deep breath.

"I feel like I could sleep for a week."
