Early August - Glowing Water - Mostly at the Beach and on the Boardwalk
[Ever since leaving Sasuke's pond, Keith had been spending a lot of time near the beach and on the boardwalk. He wasn't a strong swimmer, and, yet, he honestly didn't care if Mariana just sucked him back out in the waves at this point. But, he was trying. Everyone was asking him to try, to keep going and pushing. So, here he was.
But he was definitely curious about that glow that had developed out there recently. He approached relatively cautiously. No, he wasn't trying to re-squid himself. Don't worry. He was just investigating that light. Care to join him?]
=====
[Once down there, the ships were intriguing. Keith could be found investigating them. They had enough of a draw that it kind of spurred something in him that had been missing since he'd found himself human and naked in Sasuke's courtyard, next to a pond where he'd been spending time as a squid with Lance, who'd also been a squid. But, after his apology on the network, and dealing with how he felt about The Reckoning, he needed something new to focus on.
So, here he was, having followed that glowing water down to this place, looking for whatever it was that made it so intriguing to everyone.

[Paint her more in the 'curious' side of things. She was still struggling with what had happened with Chara last month, but she'd tamped it down a lot further, and focusing on some of her friends she hadn't wronged while deranged helped. Besides, after the talk on the network, when she'd seen Keith, she figured it was good to keep tabs on her friend.
Sliding up, she was in a swimsuit, because yeah she was definitely thinking about going down there.]
Not sure about breathing down there yet, but I can turn into a squid on purpose if I really want to. It's... a little weird, but it works.
[The joys of being vile-blooded with her power set.]
no subject
Yeah, actually... I am. I've seen a few people do it now. [He crossed his arms, staring pointedly at the nearest batch of glowing water.] There's definitely something to it.
[As for squids...] I saw someone else immediately revert to being a squid once. [Damn it, Min-Gi. The guy even inked on his hand. Gross.] I haven't tried doing it myself... well, on purpose. [Finding his squid form again after being killed didn't count. He knew that for a fact.]
no subject
I... think it's technically possible for any of us. My body just does it a little easier. That whole 'shifting' thing that I can do with the vileblood.
[She held up a hand and showed him the claws she could form before relaxing them with only the slightest wince. It was still uncomfortable, but it was getting more ... manageable with time.]
The forms I can take are based on two different things. Of course one's a squid. Since we're basically living in squid bodies that have changed to look like our real selves. I bet it's easier if you're in the water, if you want to try.
...
It's not half as weird as that sounds.
no subject
Maybe... not right now. [After all, it was only a little while ago that he'd involuntary been back to being a squid, and he wasn't sure he wanted to make that attempt, yet. He gave her a weak, humorless smile. He needed some distance between the present time and having to go through some sort of weird rebirth and transformation thing before he wanted to think about consciously becoming a squid through means other than death.] I think I'll be okay just swimming. From what I've seen and heard... breathing isn't actually an issue as long as we stay in the glowing part.

[She stretched, flexing her fingers when her arms came back down and looking at her palms with a little frown before clenching them and turning back to Keith. If she didn't have to turn squid, so much the better.]
It's a strange power, to say the least. If I don't actually need to use it, it's better that I don't. So, lady's first, or would you like me to bring up the rear guard?
[She stepped over and picked up a fairly basic looking harpoon. Her gun wasn't going to be much use down there, but she wasn't going unarmed.]
no subject
I'm good with either, honestly. I've done both myself. Whatever you're more comfortable with.

Sorry this took so long. :( Feel free to drop if it's too old.
Boats? Boats!
Not that he was trying to convince himself, of course.
He was a bit surprised to hear a bit of splashing behind him when he realized who it was that was making his way towards him.]
Keith? What are you doing out here?
I'M ON A BOAT
I mean... I'm here. Checking out the glowing water. [As one does when the water glows, right? Sure, it could be a dangerous trap that dragged them into some watery hellscape, but it could also be a lead to find out what the heck was going on in this place.
Of course, the fact that Keith was out here and not trying to actively resquid himself at this point anymore after a month of guilt hell and dealing with the fact that he'd died, crystalized, turned back into a squid, HATCHED FROM THE CRYSTAL, and then turned back into himself? That was probably a surprise. He also still kind of looked like hell, but was definitely kind of just... pushing himself along.]
no subject
If I'd known you were interested in science I would have dragged you into the field earlier.
[He and Takashi were closer. He'd told Adam about what Keith had gone through. The trauma. Perhaps Adam could serve him best as a distraction.
He has his notepad on, noting variations and any other obtainable data.]
Noticed anything interesting yet?
no subject
Well, I was more trying to figure out if there was anything to it that might have clues or something about this place... not so much the idea of glowing water being scientific.
[Geeze, Adam. You were such a nerd. (As if Keith and Shiro weren't in their own ways.) Keith shrugged.]
Just kind of searching. I heard people found some stuff in those boats, so I was curious.
no subject
[He slid a familiar smile Keith's way, one eyebrow raised.]
Want to check out the boats?
no subject
Like any of us do?
[Really... pot, kettle, and pan...]
Yeah. Let's go.
[He had his blade. It would be easier to use underwater in the dagger form than as a sword, so there was that, at least, if they needed it.]

Mid-August - Monster Times - Around Town, Squid Monster Malady
[Being exposed to the water, Keith hadn't realized this was going to make him change into a squid monster. It was a slow transformation, of course. And, honestly, nothing about it immediately seemed bad.
The increased strength took a bit of getting used to as he was helping Lance with rebuilding the house and the demo of a damaged wall with the intention to replace it went a lot faster when he tried it and took down the whole wall in one swing. Or how he was able to work through the entire day without resting. Only days before he went to see the ships in the ocean, getting himself to do anything at all had seemed an impossible task.
Keith was having some issues getting used to it, though, as he could be found at a few shops around town causing a mild havoc. He felt bad enough already after having gone through damaging things on purpose, but now, as he tried to help clean up, he was doing it on accident!
Someone muttered about a curse as he picked up a crate of watermelon, and accidentally threw it instead, smashing several melons on the sidewalk.]
I'm sorry. I'm sorry. [Keith waved at them.] I didn't mean it! I swear!
=====
[After a while, Keith started noticing those black patches on his skin. Honestly, with some of the other changes that had been happening to him, he didn't think much of it. It just seemed like yet another thing he had to deal with between the fangs, the hair change, his scars getting more prominent, his nails becoming claws...
Black patches of skin were just yet another thing on top of it all.]
Uugh... [Honestly, he felt bloated. That weird burst of speed and stamina? It was being balanced down a bit by feeling bloated and gross. He was damp, all the time, from those patches of skin that were spreading. Even fully covered in normal Trench fashion, it was becoming visible on his neck.
At some point, he was rubbing his hands against each other in frustration until he finally pulled one of his gloves off.]
I just got back from being a squid! Why do I have suckers on my hand?!

Duty catches the part-squid Sleeper's eye and looks him dead on. "Come with me if you want to live," he says, "I can answer your question but on the way. If we don't get you cured, you'll be a squid again and not the friendly neighborhood kind." He motions for them to go but keeps enough distance between them to react to any attempt at contact. He's not a touchy guy, but this is a safety measure. Been there, done that, and Mercymorn didn't even give him a crappy t-shirt.
no subject
Because, damn, if that wasn't ominous. Keith was honestly too shocked to argue from the tone and approach.
Wait... that voice was familiar.
"Uh... okay...?" He self-consciously tucked the offending hand into a pocket. "So, you know what this is about, then?" Honestly, Keith had been ignoring the black patches, thinking it was just more of the other transformations going on with him. It seemed par for the course around here. And the fact that several people he knew had reverted to squidhood and squiggled back into the ocean had him wondering if he was doomed for the same fate, but... this felt... different.
And he'd been a squid again not that long ago.
"You... um... we've talked before, haven't we?"
no subject
"I had it," Duty answers, "I'm taking you to the person who cured me." He has dark scarred skin, but his arms are bare, and his face, neck, and hands are clearly visible. They're all clear of any squid like appearance.
"If you don't get cured, you will rampage." Further risk of harm and murder. At that point, the simplest easiest solution is to kill the monster squid. Curing people is specific and difficult at that stage.
Their network interaction establishes a connection, but Duty's not sure it's a boon. "Yes," he answers anyway. "On your network post." About Keith's last... rampage or equivalent.
no subject
"Did you... 'rampage'?"
Honestly, the idea of getting all monster-y for a third time and causing havoc and damage was kind of enough to get him to follow someone who knew about a cure at this point. He was desperate to not have that happen again, no matter what anyone said about this place leaving him with essentially no responsibility... that people would understand and not act. No. Keith was carrying that responsibility regardless of having his self-control and free will taken from him. He couldn't go through that again.
"Oh, right." Honestly, Keith was terrible with names and all that. He could remember a face, and sometimes a voice. Names were another thing, though. But he did remember a good portion of their discussion... and it made him wonder. "So... you're just making sure I don't go making a mess of everything again." Even if that was the case or not, Keith still appreciated it. "Thanks... for the help." Regardless of reason.
no subject
He looks ahead down the damp road ahead of them. What has such a chip on this kid's shoulder? "I'm making sure anyone affected that I can find gets help," Duty says. Even if that help is a respawning. "It isn't a fun experience, but it's effective."
He stands over the grate to a storm sewer. "Any questions before we hop down there?" It's a commitment. Keith can still change his mind once he sees the edges of Mercymorn's lair, but at that point Mercymorn may or may not let him go.
no subject
"It's good that you've found a way to help people from being affected." Keith meant it, too. No sarcasm, no backtalk... just how he felt.
He stared down at the sewer grate for a moment, hesitating. Part of him was wondering where the red balloons were, but he took a breath.
"The sewer?"

Only for that less crowded part to suddenly have a watermelon nuke dropped down in it. He is now standing right by the mess, with watermelon on his boots, and somehow some got flung onto his face. He reaches up slowly after a moment to swipe it off of his eyes as he hears Keith's panicked voice.]
Seriously? [Of course this is how his day would turn. Though he thinks he knows what happened. Keith isn't the only one who's been exposed to the water…]

I-I uhh... sorry...? It kinda got away from me...

Dude, how does a melon just get away from you?

I don't... know...? I was just trying to lift it.
