11 . clockhouse rebuilding!

Who: Those who have offered to help rebuild the Clockhouse, and anyone else who'd like to pitch in!
What: An open mingle log to repair after fires and floods.
When: Throughout September, precise dates not specified.
Where: In Gaze, at the forest's edge.

[ When the weather and chaos dies down, work on the Clockhouse picks up. The building was once an old Deerington mansion, luridly green and eccentric; age faded it into half a ruin, and July's fire did the rest. August's flooding came fast and hard, and now there's very little left to salvage.

The first step has been a damage assessment, with volunteers picking through the structurally unstable ruins, finding singed fiction novels, crisped houseplants, and a weird number of melted grandfather clocks. Demolition goes quickly, while Ozpin stands by and does not even try to control the situation.

Volunteers are needed to design the new structure, carry in materials, and build... and then to decorate and enchant what they've created. The few Sleepers with genuine construction experience provide direction, Ozpin sometimes among them, but things are largely chaotic. A few Sleepers provide snacks and cheerleading.

This is a mingle log. Please feel free to make a toplevel, and comment with your character's contributions below! ]

[ If there's one thing Penny always feels good about, it's helping people. Helping friends is just an additional delightful cherry on top of an already delightful cake. She's even got some unique skills to offer!

During the demolition she spends a lot of time knocking over pillars, breaking up large chunks of rubble, and clearing ground space for future construction. She makes liberal use of lasers both large and small in the process, particularly when it comes to knocking down structures that are still standing. And when she doesn't have her own task assigned to her, she doesn't hesitate to approach others with a cheerful:
]

Excuse me! Are you in need of assistance?

[ Even given her prowess at blowing things up, construction is when Penny really shines. She's not much for designing things, but she's fantastic at picking up and moving heavy objects. Plus, her literally robotic precision means she's unparalleled when it comes to spacing out wall framing, laying bricks, and welding things together (again with her lasers). She's got her limits, though, and finally encounters one in earnest when it comes time to lift one of the roof's central ridge beam into place. Deciding how to tackle it is tricky, and she ends up suggesting: ]

Maybe we could try lifting it with a pulley and Darkblood, and then I can help make sure it's in place?

[Ruby taps her chin in thought as she looks to Penny. Then looks to the beam and then back to her again.]

That's not a bad idea. But the dark bloods are mostly tied up with other things at the moment.

Maybe if you start to lift it with your swords. I can pop in underneath and make like a me shaped block of ice with my aura to support it and give you break as we lift it up. I could probably do it a few times until we get it up.

It's not the most effective way but it could work.

[ True. Plenty of Darkbloods have shown up to help, but most of them seem to be preoccupied. It's up to her and Ruby, then! And, for better or worse, Penny doesn't see a single thing that might go wrong with Ruby's plan. ]

That's a wonderful idea! That way I can focus on lifting without worrying about stability.

[ Her strength isn't really the issue, in this case; she'd managed to support one of Amity's central platforms, after all. Setting it back down precisely, though? That's the tricky part. ]

That sounds similar to how Blake's Semblance works... do you need any Dust for it?

[ She's aware that Ruby's new blood has changed how her Aura works, but she's not the overly curious old scientist of Ruby's friend's group, so she's not really sure how it works. ]

[ Is it a surprise to see Penny approaching her so brightly? Not really. Ange may not know the other super well yet, but between what she's seen from Penny so far and the stuff she's heard from Ruby, this sort of attitude is entirely unsurprising at this point.

It makes Ange look up from where she was poking through the rubble, instead glancing over at Penny's face. There's something in Ange's hand that she picked up from said rubble, but it's burnt so badly that it's hardly recognizable as something anymore.

She puts it back down on the rubble as she speaks up. ]

Ah.. Not really. I was just kind of hoping something important might still turn up from under all this mess, but it seems like everything's completely gone. [ Something Ange has quite a bit of feelings about, though she manages to shove them all under her pokerface as she speaks. ]

[ Penny's a little surprised to hear Ange is still looking, and not at all surprised to hear that she's not having much luck. Still, she thinks Ange must be more bothered by it than she pretends. She doesn't have any real evidence for this aside from the fact that Ange is still looking in the first place, but Winter was the same way and the similarities between the two of them are numerous.

It's for that reason that Penny shies away from offering direct sympathy, though it's all over her expression, and instead says:
]

Is there anywhere you haven't been able to check yet...? I can help move anything that might be too heavy.
entreats: (so my darling; give me your absence)

[personal profile] entreats 2022-09-28 06:38 am (UTC)(link)
[ Ange hums, seeming to actually serious consider what Penny is asking from her here.

Maybe mostly since it's worded in the sort of way where she can still be casual about it, rather than Penny pointing out how desperate Ange must seem to still be looking, even now. But Ange has always had a hard time letting go of the past, and this entire situation is no exception.

So instead she just looks around, and then points to the largest pile of rubble still remaining. ]

Over there, mostly. Those pieces were too big for me to move by hand, and I didn't want to use my magic.

[ Not after the latter is what caused her to almost beast out the other month. It's made her be a little bit more careful about her magic usage, not wanting that to happen again. ]

Do you think you'd be able to do it? It has to be careful, in case there's something underneath it that could break.

[ Penny is prepared to be turned away, which just means she's even more delighted when Ange relents and admits there is something she needs help with. Penny doesn't press her on the fact that she won't use her magic, just turns to regard the pile of rubble. She takes a moment to size it up - literally size it up, as she's able to make loose calculations as to the dimensions of the pieces of rubble from here. After a moment, her conclusion is... ]

If I go slowly, I should be able to remove each piece on top without dislodging the ones underneath. But once we get to the smaller pieces, we'll probably have to work together to keep it from completely collapsing.
entreats: (i wouldn't even mind)

[personal profile] entreats 2022-09-30 06:40 am (UTC)(link)
[ She slowly nods. ]

That shouldn't be impossible.

[ Sure, Ange can't even imagine lifting those huge pieces of rubble by herself. She's definitely not a very physically strong person, after all. But even she can dig out the smaller rubble.

She doesn't even seem too fazed by Penny needing a moment to look at it - though Ange doesn't know the other's mental calculations are a little more literal mental calculations than they'd be for most people. She just figures Penny was trying to figure out a game plan here. ]

I should stay out of your way at first, right?

[ Easier for Penny to avoid accidentally hitting her with the bigger pieces.. Ange is a big supporter of workplace safety here on the building grounds!! ]

Once I need to hop in to help with the smaller stuff, you can call me. Though.. [ Pause.

Hm. Considering this is Penny they're talking about-- ]

I'm not sure how much time you'd need for the bigger pieces. [ Maybe she'll be done in no time at all. ]
