11 . clockhouse rebuilding!

Who: Those who have offered to help rebuild the Clockhouse, and anyone else who'd like to pitch in!
What: An open mingle log to repair after fires and floods.
When: Throughout September, precise dates not specified.
Where: In Gaze, at the forest's edge.

[ When the weather and chaos dies down, work on the Clockhouse picks up. The building was once an old Deerington mansion, luridly green and eccentric; age faded it into half a ruin, and July's fire did the rest. August's flooding came fast and hard, and now there's very little left to salvage.

The first step has been a damage assessment, with volunteers picking through the structurally unstable ruins, finding singed fiction novels, crisped houseplants, and a weird number of melted grandfather clocks. Demolition goes quickly, while Ozpin stands by and does not even try to control the situation.

Volunteers are needed to design the new structure, carry in materials, and build... and then to decorate and enchant what they've created. The few Sleepers with genuine construction experience provide direction, Ozpin sometimes among them, but things are largely chaotic. A few Sleepers provide snacks and cheerleading.

"Hey, Luz." Keith's voice was muffled behind that scarf. It was just such a tiny breeze, but it might as well be carrying arctic air as far as Keith was concerned. He shifted the scarf a little so it was better to talk to someone. "It's cold. I'm trying to stay warm." Of course, yesterday had been boiling hot, but... sure.

"Cold? It's that cold to you?"

Luz quirked her head. She had unfortunately not seen anyone else experiencing this, so she was mistified.

"Are you anemic?"

"No. I'm just cold."

And grumpy. But, when wasn't he grumpy lately?

"It was hot yesterday. I don't know how anyone hasn't gotten the flu or something from these temperature changes. I hate season changes."

"Oh. Huh. Maybe I'm just more used to the cold?"

Then again, no one around them seemed to be affected.

"It might depend on where you come from? Where I live, I'm used to four seasons, so the transition can sometimes happen all at once. My body might be used to it."

She shrugged.

"So you're going to help build too, right? I'm probably just going to do whatever is needed: knowing it's Ruby, they're probably going to have all kinds of fortifications."

Keith huffed slightly and shrugged.

"Considering that I'm feeling every temperature to the extreme right now, I think it's more of a Trench thing. I don't usually react so badly normally, and, with having the coldblood thing here, I haven't really been affected by it at all since I arrived. This is the first time."

He looked annoyed by it, to be honest. But he nodded about being there to help.

"Yeah. I've been doing a lot of reconstruction lately."

"Really? Jeez, that's terrible! I mean, sorry. Good luck Keith, I hope it's over soon."

Right! Now was the time for distractions!

"This'll be my first time. What do you think we ought to do first?"

"Heh... yeah. Me, too. Though, you're not wrong. It's pretty terrible." He sighed. "With how Trench works, though, it'll likely be over by the end of the month." Keith gave a small shrug and then glanced over at the construction site, looking things over.

"Well, we need to get supplies into place. There looks like there might be some demolition left to do, too." He tried not to let a chill make him shiver as he pulled his arms in close around himself. "We could start with the demo... Let's check the plans and see if there's anything left to come down."

"I mean, let's hope it's only a few days! A whole month of that would probably drive me crazy! That reminds me of when I couldn't sleep one month into Trench! I felt like I was going to go nuts!"

But maybe Keith was just better at acclimating to that kind of crazy. Luz was a girl who couldn't stand still, and extreme heat or cold would have been very uncomfortable.

"Demolition, you say? Hmm. I mean, I could help a little with that, but I feel like Ruby would want to blow things up with her own hands. If it's up to us though, that'll be fun!"

Luz was already thinking of the quickest way to try and take something down, please look at the plans Keith.

Keith? Look at plans? Hardly!

"I've heard about that at times. Some people get that whole not sleeping thing. I mean, I've had times when it's hard to sleep normally. I get that a lot, actually." He huffed a small sigh. "This is pretty annoying, though. One day, I'm freezing... one day, it's too hot. Sometimes it feels the air is actually heavy enough to make me struggle with moving." He shook his head. "I don't know."

But yeah... plans...? Where were those again?

"Maybe... I can see the appeal..." Demolition was definitely fun and a good way to get out frustration.

Good, they're in the same boat then!

"It was a really strange way to start to get used to this place. Now, I can understand staying up, I've done that to make sure people in my house ate right or were kept company. But I couldn't do it for days on end, I have to rest eventually!"

Luz sighed. She wished she could do something for Keith, but if it was a blood thing, she figured was nothing to be done for it.

"I don't mind helping with either, but demolishing is always a little more fun. It's like earth science, trying to figure out which is the best way to take a certain thing down!"

Maybe more chemistry than earth science, but Luz was already trying to figure how a glyph combination was best useful.

"What did you have in mind?"

Keith gave a weak chuckle at the comment about rest. Oof. Boy. He wasn't one to talk about rest, that was for sure. He tended to push himself to his limits all the time. "Yeah..."

Better to focus on the task than deciding if getting enough rest was the right thing to do. He knew it was. It just rarely happened. And he was more prone to making sure others got it before himself...

"Earth science...?" He wasn't really sure about that comparison, honestly, and it showed in the confused expression on his face. Moving on... "Well, obviously, we need to take out any of the stuff that got damaged and isn't salvageable, right?" He looked back at the building, and that looked exactly like what most people were doing. "So, let's get started seeing what's damaged beyond repair, and then... knock it down." He shrugged under all his layers of warm clothes, the movement barely visible, and then turned to head over towards the building.

Luz knew enough that even she needed to be told not to go crazy with her own health. There was always corruption right around the corner, and the last thing she wanted was to scare her family.

"Oh, I was thinking about fast forward erosion! Heh, I know, it's a bad comparison! Actually, now that I think about it, I should probably get some schooling soon anyway, it's been a few years."

Good plan though.

"Ok then! I'll start with the scouting, and you can do the removal stuff. I can hit things easily, but I still am struggling with my weak nerd arms and all."

No you aren't, Luz. You are far from having those, Keith knows that of all people. But he is technically physically stronger, so Luz was defering to him.

"Forward..." Yeah. Keith was definitely not a geology person. He shook his head. "I do better with outerspace than earth stuff."

But, moving on... yes, good plan. Keith nodded as they moved into the building's remains to start examining what was there.

"Weak nerd arms, huh?" He smirked a bit. Maybe he was stronger, but she certainly had been in better control of her wits than he had been during that tournament. "The Blade of Marmora taught me it's about fighting smarter, not harder. Physical strength isn't all it's cracked up to be."

"And I'm not good with either of those," Luz confessed, but I'm definitely going to try and work to help make this new place!"

She knew her magic would help, she just needed to get a better idea of what she was going to need to work on!

"You have a point. In fact, maybe we just need to get a bit of helping hands!"

Luz dropped her plant glyphs down, and growing beanstalks shaped like writhing vines were already starting to form around the debris and crush it together."

Welp. Keith certainly didn't have anything to compete with that. He watched in a kind of awe as her glyphs basically did the same thing that Pidge's vine canon from the Green Lion could do.

"That's really cool."

A real wordsmith, this one...

Luz couldn't help smiling a little at the encouragement. She would never have been called cool back on Earth, so she basked a little in that glow of acknowledgement.

"Heh, thanks! If you know how to cast the glyphs, and what you intend, you can do some really cool stuff with it! For now though, we can just start with demolishing and getting rid of the useless stuff."

Now Luz stepped aside so Keith could take care of his own pile of debris.

Keith nodded. Right. His own pile of stuff.

Welp... had to do this the old fashioned way, he supposed. He didn't have cool plant powers or anything like that. So, he moved in and began to push the debris around in order to make it easier to lift as much as possible. Best to reduce trips.

Luz watched him, not trying to be dismissive in the slightest.

"Man. You are STRONG! Can I help you with that? On my own, I mean?"

"Yeah, if you want..." Keith shrugged a bit. He was used to doing heavy lifting. Granted, he wasn't as strong as Shiro or Hunk, but he wasn't exactly weak, either. "It would save us some trips." Since there was still some smaller stuff left that he hadn't be able to pull into the stack he'd grabbed. But he wasn't going to turn down any additional help, that was for sure.

"Sure!" Luz was already taking small breaths and sat a moment to start writing out her glyphs. She figured she was going to have to make several of these if they wanted to actually make a small job of this.

"I think we can burn up some of that stuff we don't need, but I'll save that glyph to the end. We don't want to make it too big, right?"

"Yeah..." Keith laughed a bit at the irony. "I mean, being a coldblood, I could just set fire to it on my own, too." He smirked a little. Then, he went over to drop what he had into the pile where they were disposing of the unusable stuff.

"That is true!" Luz sighed. "It's been a bit since the house had a Cold blood. And it was Varian, so he wasn't likely to be using it too much anyway."

She paused, "Can you control how much fire you can put out?"

"Mostly." Keith shrugged. The only time he couldn't was when his emotions got away from him. As long as he stayed calm, he could control it. "Plus, if it gets out of hand, I can always make ice to stop the flames from getting too bad." That was the easy part, at least. If he did get angry enough to accidentally set something on fire, it often scared him enough to be able to trigger an ice blast to quell the flames.

"Oh, that's pretty good! Man, you've got some nifty powers! I'd need my glyphs to make all that stuff happen! I don't regret it of course, but it would be pretty easy to make it happen with my hands! I can also do some pretty neat combinations, so I won't complain!"

She looked over at the debris. "And that means that you can take care of that stuff pretty good! We just have to be careful about where to redirect all the smoke. Don't want it getting too out of control and making people cough."

Sound like Luz might have some experience doing this the wrong way.

Keith looked thoughtful as he stared at the growing pile for a moment. Smoke, huh? Blowing in the wrong or right direction... He didn't exactly have wind magic... but...

He looked back at Luz for a moment.

"Can your glyphs create wind?" he asked. "Maybe you can create a focused breeze to blow the smoke away from the construction?"
