“I never said I didn’t believe it. I merely meant I doubt anyone has gone through worse than what I have,” Maul says with a growl. It’s as if he sees this as some sort of insane, morbid contest and thinks he’s the clear winner.

See, this is why he doesn’t like telling people about his past. So many of his friends telling him vulnerability is a good thing, that opening up to people will allow them to have sympathy for him and be able to understand him when he does things like want to set boundaries with them. All he keeps seeing is people who are willing to throw it back in his face and still condemn him as a monster for what he was molded into against his will. Daniel is unfortunately playing right into the mindset that Maul has that everyone will use what they learn against him.

“Yes and it appears having an open mind isn’t yours,” Maul throws back at Daniel. Still, there’s a brief flicker on Maul’s face when he hears Daniel’s words and he actually looks…..hurt? Yes, for a moment, he truly does look upset. That one really gets under his skin, for one of the things Maul has worked on so hard is being able to open himself up again and find people he can care about. He’s got a small circle of people he loves fiercely and dearly with all his hearts, so to be told he doesn’t think of others really does hurt a little.

Then they start coming to the end of the forest. Thank the Force, for Maul is approximately about two minutes and one more snarky comment away from lifting Daniel up by the neck and choking him all with the Dark Side. His fingers close in around the compass and he doesn’t offer to give it back to Daniel. “This is mine now,” he declares. He considers it fair compensation for having to put up with his man for the sojourn through the woods.
