for robby & tory
Especially not when he usually prides himself in discipline. In punctuality. He always gets up early to go do kata on the beach, since it's one of the few things that manages to keep his head clear in this place. And today it feels even more important to be there on time, since Robby will be there, and he asked if he could bring Tory too, and..
It's not like he oversleeps to some crazy time, but even just not being there early in advance is embarrassing to Daniel. It goes against everything he stands for. So by the time he manages to look presentable in his gi and makes his way over towards the beach, still trying to rub the sleep from his eyes, the teens are already there. ]
Hey.
[ He greets them both with a nod - and a faintly apologetic hint in his expression. ]
Sorry for being on the late side. I've been a bit.. tired. [ Sure, you could say, 'Daniel, you idiot, why are you underplaying a blood effect you literally can't help anyway.'
But just the fact he mentions it at all is Daniel trying, honestly. ]
Nice of you to join us today though, Tory. Do you just want to watch?
[ He figures it's probably the safer thing to ask first. Daniel is honestly not sure if kata is something any of the Cobra Kai kids would really want to persue much, and he wouldn't want to force her into it. If she's just here to watch Robby, Daniel doesn't mind.
But it's not like he'd be opposed to it if she did want to try either. Maybe it should be a little weirder, but.. well. Do the lines between dojos really matter in a place like this, where every skill to keep yourself together and well protected matters? ]
no subject
Which is to say, Robby wasn't just going to stand around doing nothing with Tory on a beach. Aches have been bugging her recently, and moving seemed to help as well as rest. Him, he isn't really keen on anything that could constitute as idling; so while Mister LaRusso's absence was an oddity, standing around and worrying about it wasn't going to be any use. And what was?
A shrug, and going, "Well-- we can get some stretches in 'til he comes."
But it's good that Mister LaRusso shows when he does; stretches alone not enough to keep Robby's mind interested, and there's relief, an exhale as the man finally makes his approach to their part of the beach. ]
I was gonna start teaching her myself. [ It's good-humoured, even if there is an impatient note - less annoyed, and more just rearing to go. ]
no subject
I'll watch for now.
[She wants to see how it goes, and Robby's been patient with her, doing stretches when it seems like he wants to be more on the go. But she does want to pose a question.
Kata was not something emphasized in Cobra Kai, and what they did learn for the skills portion of the All Valley? Was far more aggressive and showy than what she suspects Mr.LaRusso would do for his morning exercise. So it makes her wonder if perhaps it would be better for her to be moving rather than stationary.]
Do you think kata would help with aches? Kind of like a combo of yoga and martial arts?

for 2b
.. a little bit. In a way that doesn't even have anything to do with 2B, honestly. He genuinely does think that getting in a little bit more practice with meditation, and just some time to meditate in general, will do wonders for the other. Hopefully enough so she can apply it by herself if she'll ever truly need it in another situation - and with the way Trench is, surely she'll need it at some point. They all do.
No, this is more about.. well, it's not quite like the way he taught people karate back home, but it inches dangerously close to that. And he feels a little bit more nervous about that idea still, just like he confessed to Robby before. The worry that he'll be a wrong teacher again, that he'll only hurt the kids he's trying to look after, over and over again.
But he has to try. If this is something that can help 2B, he has to try. Even if it's just by sending that offer of meditation lessons to her before he can think better of it, and then being unable to retract it once it's out there in the world.
And then just trying to ignore his nerves the best he can.
Despite all of that though, the small smile that exists on Daniel's face when he opens the door to welcome her at the time they arranged to meet up for the meditation - over at his house, considering he's been converting it to have a good meditation space - is very much genuine. He's always glad to see the other, and even more so to see her looking alright.
(Daniel himself may look a little tired, but it's the coldblood. He's going to do his best to not fall asleep mid-meditation, okay.) ]
2B. It's so good to see you-- come on in. [ He's already moving aside so she can step in. ] Have you been alright?
no subject
or so, that's what she would try to do. after the ordeals of dark trench, returning, and ever since then wanting . . . a little more than pretending it didn't happen? every night. she doesn't forget what's been said to her and what she's experienced. even if she keeps her face straight as she enters, inclining her head as she does, there is still the slightest kink at the top of the bridge of her nose. ]
I'm not sure.
[ she's at least honest with herself, there. she's not alright, so to speak, but she still seems to be in one piece, physically. the pros of only needing repairs when you're damaged. ]
But it's good to see you, too.
no subject
But it's also a little painful. This is the part of Trench that Daniel hates the most, even though there's quite a bit to dislike. The part that digs into people, that hurts them, especially people who never deserved such a thing.
The only thing he can hope for is to make the burden a little lighter to bear. ]
I'm sorry to hear that. [ He says, and it doesn't sound like a platitude. There's something extra in Daniel's voice, something that shows he truly means that. That he's feeling right alongside her.
The man reaches out, a hand landing on her shoulder. It's a light, gentle touch. ]
I know we're here for meditation, but.. if you feel like talking about anything would help you alongside that, let me know at any point, alright? I'm a pretty good listener.

here's the wrap tag!
for pyrrha
Usually that would have been the worst thing, but this time the waters of Trench brought something else along too. Of course rather than bringing him his wife, or his kids, or even anyone else he'd want to see from back home, they would instead bring him the one person he would be perfectly content never seeing again.
It's put him on edge the entire time, from the moment he first saw the other again. Daniel hates that the sheer presence of Terry Silver in the same place as him has this sort of effect on him, but no matter how much he tries to fight the feelings, it's like they only get worse. More intense. More paranoia, more worries--
And for once in his life Daniel may be realising that he's going to only spiral further if he keeps this to himself, no matter the instinct to do so. Maybe he can't quite bring himself to talk about this, but he should at least seek out company instead of spending every waking moment feeling like he's on the edge.
Though the whole 'seeking out company' list is limited. There are plenty of people Daniel wouldn't want to see him like this. Not to mention that he doesn't want to burden any of his kids either, so those are off the list immediately.
Which is how he ends up at Pyrrha. She seems to be as close of a friend as he's got at this point in Trench, and she's completely unrelated to the situation at home on top of it. So Daniel invites her once more - though not out for drinks this time, but instead over to his home. He did make sure he's got some drinks on supply though, just in case.
There's definitely the fear he might find Terry at the door, his paranoia just that strong, but it immediately rolls off his shoulders in relief when he instead spots Pyrrha standing there when he opens the door.
".. you have no idea how glad I am to see you," Daniel says. (It's very visible on his face though, just how glad and relieved he is. It shines even through how tired and worn the man looks compared to the last time they hung out together.) "Sorry that we couldn't go to the bar again this time, but I thought it'd be kind of embarrassing to randomly fall asleep there."
And that always seems to be a risk this month, honestly. Dumb coldblood.
"Come on in."
Re: for pyrrha
"No shortage of shit going around this month," Pyrrha says. She gives him a quick hug. "It'd be particularly dumb since it could be both of us. I don't care about being embarrassed, but that's a security hazard." Duty's regularly escorted Yuan around town, and that pays off when it means he'll be there should Duty fall asleep.
She follows Daniel in and checks out the house. "It'd be a little weird never to meet at your place or mine," she comments. "There's many good things about living together as a group, but it's weirder when friends drop by." Unless those friends, like Sarah and Heartnest, know everyone.
"So, you got somewhere soft for us to sit/lie down?" Pyrrha asks, amused. "Pillow fort?"
no subject
And now it's just him. Daniel always lets his Omen wander the house for some company, but it's never the same for a guy who is as defined by his relationship with other people as Daniel.
Not that he says any of this. Of course he doesn't. Instead he just smiles at Pyrrha when he gets that brief hug and then guides her inside, only speaking up when she arrives at that question.
"Go sit down on the couch, I'll grab some pillows and blankets." He sure doesn't dislike the idea of getting comfy together. They may as well, if they're both going to be kind of exhausted anyway.
It's not hard to find the couch though if Pyrrha goes to look. Daniel's Omen is there too, though not on the couch itself. Instead the odd little creature - looking like a cross of a dog and a lion, with its size being more like the former than the latter - is curled up in one of the armchairs, curiously watching Pyrrha.
"I can get you a drink too. What do you want? Some tea, or something stronger? I could make you a different hot drink too." Usually he wouldn't offer the latter, but.. well, if they're going to get all comfy, it fits, right.

Clooooooooosed
gek, early october
What it meant, Robby isn't so sure about. And what he thinks about going there this time-- he's not sure, either.
It's why he doesn't visit as early as he could've been, gotten there with the Wakers, or whatever the robed folks are called. Helping getting people clothed sounds like a decent thing to do (pay it forward for when he got the same help), but the personal element to it has Robby hesitating, deciding he isn't the good Samaritan that anyone needs right now. But he still decides to pay a visit to the boardwalk, taking the slow, leisurely route on his skateboard.
And the first person he sees that he knows is one already here, Robby blinking, Mister LaRusso an easy figure to spot in the other styles of Trench that don't match his. He might slow just long enough to give him a 'hey', if this was just a normal day --
But what kind of day is it, Mister LaRusso? ]
no subject
Maybe it's technically a normal day. Trench is still standing. Nothing has changed, other than the things that already changed the moment the month rolled over. Some new people are arriving on the shore, but even that is something that happens pretty much every single month. There's nothing about this day that ought to shake the world.
And yet it feels like it. It feels like the world has been entirely washed out from right underneath Daniel's feet, even as he's standing there. Terry Silver is here. In the same place as Daniel once more, just casually sauntering back into Daniel's life for the umpteenth time. And Trench only gives that man more opportunities to cause chaos and hurt people, and no one here knows what he's truly like, and then there's all those things Terry had said about back home, things he shouldn't have known about unless he's from the future, and all those things he was talking about could be true--
Daniel's heart is racing like crazy. His face looks weirdly pale in a way that's not just caused because of his pale coldblood. It may take a moment for Robby to spot it, since it's harder to see until he's close enough, but Daniel looks absolutely panicked. He looks like a man on the verge of a breakdown, his breath a little harder, a little more uneven.
But if anything gives Daniel's mood away here, it's the fact that he looks absolutely startled the moment he spots Robby. In that sort of way that only someone who's got something to hide would.
And his attempt to try and look more normal right afterwards is absolutely failing him. Daniel may not look like an utter wreck to anyone who'd pass him by right now, but to someone who knows him as well as Robby?
It's obvious. It's basically written all over Daniel's face. Something's wrong. ]
R-Robby.
[ He even stammers, gaze moving away from the other, like he can't quite maintain instant eye contact, before it finally returns to the kid. ]
I-- [ Stop. Start. ] .. didn't know you were out here.
[ Daniel's voice sounds so impossibly tight, like he's got to force words out. ]
no subject
Robby doesn't have an instinct; he doesn't know something is up with Mister LaRusso until he's slowed his board near him. There's a look about him, one that Robby initially takes as him thinking about something or other, in the same way anyone can be distracted as they're working. But the instant that the man feels the need to open his mouth, that disregard flips on itself. His brows tug close together, as Robby looks him over, though it's his face that he returns to. ]
Mister LaRusso? [ What kind of remark is that? ] Is everything alright?
[ He sounds unsure asking it, but he's actually pretty sure he wants to know what's up. ]

for maul
.. no such thing happens, though. Not even as Daniel starts moving around, looking at his nearby surroundings. There's no one hiding there - not even a monster. Even though he's suddenly out here in the woods, he seems to be well and truly alone.
It gives him more questions than answers, and Daniel decides to file this under 'Trench nonsense.' Still bothersome, but honestly.. at this point, he'll take it over this being something Terry is doing. At least Trench nonsense is never aimed at him specifically.
So Daniel does what seems logical here. Or the most logical anything can be in a weird situation like this. He finds the piece of.. something, and when it starts glowing and seems to point out a path to him, he follows it, hoping that it will at least lead him closer back to town, rather than off towards something dangerous.
He's not quite sure which of the two things the piece is leading him towards though when he suddenly spots another figure standing there in the woods - and one he recognizes. Maybe not super well, but Maul is just recognizable enough for Daniel to realise it's that guy he briefly spoke to on his first day in this place.
And who had been.. generally disagreeable.
Oh, joy.
Daniel recognizes a situation with little choice when he sees one though, so he speaks up, calling out, especially when he realises Maul also has something in his hands that's glowing.
"You got one of these things too?" He asks, waving his own in the air as he approaches. It feels like the best thing to ask here. Something calm. Neutral. The last thing he needs is to get annoyed by this guy all over again in the middle of a forest, especially when he has no idea where in this forest he is.
no subject
He finds himself holding a piece of something and isn't quite sure just what he's gotten his hands on now. So he starts walking, not sure where he's going. When he sees Daniel, he recognizes the man he'd talked to on his first day here. He holds up the half of the object he possesses. "So it would seem. Did you wake up out here as well?"
no subject
There's a chance the other is lying, but Daniel doesn't think he is. After all, they're all equal in the face of just how much Trench loves messing with them. If Daniel himself could wake up in the woods without any idea of how that came to be, then the same could have happened to Maul.
Which means sharing information is their best bet when it comes to making their way out of here.
"No clue how," he even admits. "I figure it's just this place being up to something again."
There's a brief glance down at the piece of whatever exactly this thing is supposed to be when it's fully put together, but then Daniel's gaze raises to look back over at Maul again.
"It kind of seems like this thing lead me to you, more or less."

for terry
But sometimes it is Terry Silver.
Not that Daniel realises it quite yet. But maybe he should have. After all, it's not like he made it very hard for the man to sneak around wherever he pleases. From the front Daniel's house may look like any other one in Trench, but the back seems to be in the middle of renovations. Fencing partially put up around the back, but not quite all the way yet, leaving an easy entry towards the back of the house - which definitely looks like it's been modified to look a whole lot like mister Miyagi's house, ironically enough, considering where Daniel and Terry met all those decades ago.
But it also means that the doors in the back are the Japanese sliding door kind. Easy to open, for one, but also easy to look through with a lamp still shining in the house.
It reveals Daniel's form in there, slumped on the couch. He seems asleep, though it also seems like he fell asleep rather abruptly, judging by the way he's slumped sideways against the armrest of the couch he's sitting on, a book dangling from one hand over the edge of the couch. His hair and skin still damp, like he's had a bath only a little while before. ]
no subject
Of course he follows Daniel home. He needs to gain the upper hand, and he stalks Danny boy like a predator stalks its prey. He hides in the yard, still and silent, and waits for him to fall asleep before pushing the sliding door open and creeping inside, nearly silent as he moves. He looms above Daniel, watching him sleep for a few moments before he summons Nero to his side, lifting the snake up with both hands and placing it gently on the couch behind Daniel.
The boa works its way around Daniel's neck slowly, and Terry idly wonders how long it will take him to wake up. He's not actually going to choke him to death, of course, he just wants to have a little fun. ]
no subject
Even when the Omen moves onto him, Daniel still doesn't seem to notice. Whatever got him so exhausted that he'd fall asleep right here while sitting down, it's powerful enough to keep him asleep for a few more moments, even as the snake starts curling around his throat.
It's only when the snake has made it once all the way around his neck that the man finally stirs. Very slowly, though, like he was so deep asleep that Daniel doesn't immediately realise the situation he's in. All he knows is that there's something weirdly.. tight near his throat. Not tight enough to choke as things are now, but it's still just enough pressure to feel uncomfortable.
The book drops to the floor from his hand, and that same hand idly moves up to feel at his throat, like he's looking for a cause. Is he getting sick? Is it just some internal discomfort?
.. but then his hand touches something. Cold scales.
The sensation fully jostles Daniel awake, his eyes immediately opening wide--
-- and they just happen to be looking in just the right direction to stare straight into the eyes of the man looming over him. ]
Silver! [ He manages to hiss out, the boa not tight enough around his throat that he can't talk. His hand, still on the snake, instinctively moves to try and pry it off there. ]

( with peter and daniel )
'I met this guy, Peter. He was interested in learning karate when I asked. He's pretty new to it. I know you said you're still thinking about bringing Miyagi-do back, but... think you could help him?'
It's a meeting of Why not?; when you could offer someone the basics at your hands, or you could offer them better -- with the sensei. Daniel LaRusso's 'dojo' is different from Johnny's, in every sense: even the building is, a home instead of a warehouse, in the comfort of Crenshaw. There's fencing at the sides, a simple gate that leads down the side of the house, but Robby leads them to the front door, giving it a knock. He's been casual, easy-going; and if Peter looks anything but, he'll look back to him with a smile, reassuring: ]Trust me, he's nothing like Sensei Lawrence. And if I'm being honest, [ here, he makes a face with a scrunch of a nose, but his smile still there- ] --he kinda gives off embarrassing dad vibes.
[ Sorry Mister LaRusso, also not sorry. ]
no subject
The source of the sound becomes rapidly obvious as Daniel opens the door. Because he's standing there in the doorway, but there's something smaller than him that actually jumps out, moving to hop and bounce around the feet of the two teenagers standing in front of the door as if the little creature's life depends on it.
A little creature that very much looks like.. a lion? But at the same time like a dog, and much more sized like the latter. An odd little buddy. ]
Ah, no, come on-- [ Daniel seems to say, like he was in the middle of some statement, staring at the little animal as it just keeps hopping around.
The man decides to give up on calling it back with a sigh, instead moving his gaze up to meet the eyes of the teenagers standing in front of him. ]
Robby. [ He first greets, a small smile on his face. The other's visit with Peter is expected, since Robby asked him about this, but it's always good to see the boy regardless.
It's when he looks at the other boy though that he sticks out his hand, offering up a handshake. ]
And you must be Peter then. My name's Daniel, Daniel LaRusso. Though I'm sure Robby must've told you as much. [ Surely he didn't bring Peter over here without explaining anything to him, after all. ] It's good to hear you're interested in karate.
no subject
But time has passed, and the seasons have changed, and he's met new people and thinks new things, and the offer from Robby is one that Peter's found himself serious about taking up. He knows... he needs to learn how to keep himself safer, even a little. The thought of fighting still makes his pulse too quick and his throat too tight, but defense? That could be a thing he could do. The meditative, focus part definitely doesn't hurt, either; it's a constant for Peter, trying to find ways to keep calmer. Corruption is a factor at play, but there are other things too. People around here don't call him "haunted" for no reason.
He's sticking almost comically close to Robby, shoulder bumping against shoulder when they draw up to the front door, almost like he's trying to hide a little. The tension's probably palpable, but he still manages to smile back, even if it looks slightly queasy. )
Embarrassing dad vibes? I'll definitely take that over uh.... whatever Johnny's got going on.
( He still has no clue he's talking about poor Robby's dad, here. The man scares the crap out of him, so this Daniel guy can't be any worse, right...? And then the door's opening and Peter's blinking down at...... a dog? No... maybe not quite a dog. Fortunately, he's gotten pretty used to people having weird pets around here (his and Luna's menagerie includes a wolf-dog, a rabbit that sometimes talks, and a two-headed fish), so he doesn't wig out the way he might have once upon a time. And it's pretty cute... he's staring down at it for a long moment before looking up at the man. )
Oh— uh— yeah, that's me. ( Peter leans forwards, one long arm extended to shake the man's hand. He's offering a polite smile in return; anxious he may be, but he can still hold a normal conversation here. )
Yeah, I uh— Admittedly, I'm not too much of a fighter or anything, but he was telling me about how there's more to it than that. I've been here awhile and it's probably time I learn some useful stuff....
...that's not a dog, is it? ( He adds out of nowhere, because he cannot help asking. )

for ochako
.. but maybe he just has to try, he thinks. Just ease himself into it a little. If there are kids who want his help, and he tries to help them, then maybe he can slowly get that feeling back that he got when he first opened Miyagi-do back home in the first place.
And honestly - when he contacted Ochako about meeting up to train, she did sound a little off. In a way where he wonders if blowing off some steam might help her. So Daniel is just glad when the girl agrees to come over after Daniel explained he has a training space over at his house.
With the man not being entirely sure about the girl's state, he opens the door once she's at his front door with a slight smile on his face. Nothing too over the top, but something that is - he hopes - reassuring. ]
Hey. Glad you come make it over. Come on in. [ There's a small pause as he leads her into the house.
Maybe it's a little too blunt to ask, but.. on the other hand, Daniel is a little worried. He's just enough of a dad that he can't quite resist the call of asking: ] .. are you doing okay?
Re: for ochako
But taking it all out in a healthy way that still involved some, ah...violence - but in a controlled space - was exactly what she needed. She had to wrestle with the feeling of trying to hole herself away some more, break out of that sad little shell she curled up into, but it'd be worth it to feel like herself again. To smile and actually mean it. Not to mention, to throw a punch and feel that relieving stiffness on her knuckles. Sometimes the strain just feels good, like she's actually reaching a place she wants to be.
So, as the door opens, the young teen puts on her best smile and nods her head forward in greeting. She's pale, a little blotchy, and there's definitely some signs of fading Corruption - her eyes more amber than their chestnut brown, ears with a very faint point, and she smells of smoke and incense. The question posed catches Ochako by surprise and her smile falters. Ah...]
...It's pretty obvious, huh? [She looks almost sheepish, but takes a deep breath and shakes her head.] I'll be okay, I think. Just need things to feel more, um...normal again, I guess.
[Or as normal as it can be in Trench.]

for ezra
It makes it very easy to spot a middleaged man out on the beach, wearing something some might recognize as a white karate gi. Daniel seems to be in the middle of a series of kata, but he does stop every now and then for a brief break, so approaching him isn't too hard.
Re: for ezra
In his time in Trench, he's never been terribly interested in investing time in yet another fighting style. He is, after all, still working on truly mastering the forms of the Jedi. The whole tournament thing had only cemented that feeling, really. It's not that he holds learning martial arts for fitness, or sport, or whatever, in any sort of contempt, it's just-
He learned to fight in an insurgency; he's still working on easing back from the role of soldier and working out his path as a Jedi. So, no, he hasn't visited any of the dojos in town, except briefly to meet up with friends.
There's something appealing and maybe a little familiar about how this guy is holding himself, though.
"Are those...karate katas, or something else? Do you mind if I watch for a bit?" he asks, offering a tentative smile.
