Who: Echo and OPEN
What: Continued player plot; trying to survive the Echo-Otherworld and helping her stab her way through therapy.
When: A day in the last week or so of January
Where: Around "Trench"
Content Warnings: Violence; bloody monsters; allusions or mentions of physical and mental abuse, sexual harassment, and/or murder; blood and body interior imagery; poisoning; burns; potential for strangulation or drowning; creepy puppet imagery; emotional distress; will add more as needed
[Sorry you've found yourself somewhere as awful as the Otherworld. Echo's navigating it for the first time, and unfortunately she has a ton of trauma in her past so she's unwittingly spawn quite a lot of monsters. Luckily she is very skilled at combat if you need her help with (almost) any of them! Unfortunately she is very unfamiliar with processing the feelings all of this is going to make her deal with.]
I. Outside
a.
[With the relative suddenness of finding oneself in this nightmare, some people who have been drawn into it may be unprepared for the dangers it carries. Echo however is almost always armed, and she's not bad surveillance work either.
A Marionette monster sways unnaturally toward a potential victim, some resident of Trench or possibly even you! The swipes from the dagger it's wielding have been getting more precise and closer to hitting its target. But suddenly Echo leaps in, literally. You may not have seen her jump, but you certainly notice her downward trajectory as she lands a hard kick into the puppet's head, sending it crashing to the pavement. She then quickly plunges one of two short blades protruding from under her large sleeves into the back as she kneels, running the monster through. It all goes limp.
Echo then turns her head toward the person who had just been in harm's way.]
Perhaps you should find shelter.

[Echo is walking the streets of this disturbing, twisted Trench. Maybe you're already walking with her, or you spot her just now. A variety of monsters may be nearby as well, ahead or following behind (as one of them does). She tends to be quiet unless there's a need to speak, so it's probably up to you to start the conversation, whatever the exact scenario is!]
II. Inside
[The particular building you've entered is leading toward a major fight, one that would probably be the final boss were this a video game. But it isn't, so maybe you'll do more after this.
The interior seems to suggest the trouble ahead if only because of how grotesque it is. It almost looks like the inside of a body; walls lined with muscles and tendons, bones supporting corners, maybe even bits of an organ showing here and there. There's absolutely no rhyme or reason to the placement of the contents, but you'd definitely think of it as some living creature's interior.
In contrast, the floor seems to be made of a dark water. While you can definitely recognize it as a liquid, you're still able to walk on it just like any solid ground that would otherwise be there. Deep down, you may spot some decayed and dismembered bits of the Marionette monsters you likely already encountered.
On top of all that, very strong emotions are projecting themselves into this space. There are feelings of anger, sadism, hate, and fear that definitely seem like they're coming from someone else, but you can recognize what they are all the same.
For her part, Echo doesn't seem too bothered by any of this. While her expression is definitely darker than her typical almost blank look, she is also in control of herself.]
This looks...odd.
[Enjoy this weirdness and grossness with Echo traveling with you while you can. Your final destination is going to be much more dangerous.]
III. Safe Room
[Finally, a place to get away from the mess that is Echo's past! These rooms are fairly simple, but good for hanging out in for however many hours are left if you want. On occasion, a blue feather will come floating down out of nowhere. You also may see a doll or two as well: a brown bear cub with a rope around its neck or a very dark colored bunny with a red necktie.
In this particular room, you've found Echo too! Whatever she's been through so far is hard to tell (but feel free to specify what you'd like it to be if there's something you wanna talk about). She's seated, maybe even holding the aforementioned bear doll.]
...Have you had trouble as well?
ooc: The details can be found on the plotting post! Please feel free to specify in the subject lines or the comments here or there about what exactly you'd like to encounter. You can do multiple boss monsters in any order, no monsters at all, go from the outside to the inside, handwave whatever parts of their trek that are going to be too boring or too much, the possibilities are vast! You can even write what any monster is doing; as long as it's under my specs I really don't mind!

All of this makes the marionettes almost a relief. They're a familiar kind of threat, and one that even he can deal with. Their movement is stilted enough that he's able to disarm the first one he encounters, taking its short sword to cut it down.
The best plan, he thinks, is to find someplace relatively untouched by all this...whatever and either locate a portal or, maybe, wait it out. He sets off down the streets with that in mind, taking down stray marionettes as he goes.
At last, he turns onto another street and spots what seems to be another actual person.]
Hey!
no subject
He's not striking her as a monster, though, so she directs herself toward Fakir.]
You should be cautious. It is very dangerous here.
[Getting straight to the point. She doesn't get small talk yet anyway.]
no subject
He holds up his sword, briefly. He's noticed.]
Have you seen any other people here?
no subject
She gives a small shake of her head.]
No. I don't believe so, at least. There have been...
[Echo's lips tighten as she tries to think of the right words to describe what she's been seeing.]
...other...things.
no subject
[Are there other things?]
ii - mostly interested in finding out more about echo, through fights or otherwise! c:
So right now Ange isn't too concerned with the look of everything around them as much as she's making sure to stay on guard in case something - or, let's be real, they already encountered plenty of stuff along the way, so if more - jumps out at them.
Though she does seem kind of grossed out looking down at the dark water, lifting up her feet like she's worried about it getting all over her shoes, despite the ground seeming solid as they walk. ]
You really think 'odd' is the best word for it?
[ Ange's voice is pretty flat as she asks it - more or less her usual deadpan, rather than any real accusation. ]
no subject
Is there a better word?
[She looks toward Ange, and it's obvious she's just purely curious about this. It's like she's totally ignoring the dangers and horrible "decor".]
no subject
[ .. thanks, Ange.
A very helpful answer. But then again, Ange wouldn't be Ange if she didn't just give the blunt and direct answer under any and all circumstances.. It's the easiest way to cope with said gross and weird circumstances they've found themselves in, at the very least.
At least she's still moving, even as she's talking. Despite the fact that she does think their surroundings are really gross right now, it's not going to stop her either. ]
Do you know the part in the story of Pinocchio where they get swallowed by a whale? [ Ange, please don't just assume everyone knows these tales.. ] That's what it feels like right now.
no subject
[Echo focuses on the path again and is still pretty unfazed despite her agreement. The only change in her expression is mild confusion at the reference she doesn't understand. Even if it came up in movie night she doesn't always bother showing up, the anthropomorphized animal ones make no sense to her.]
I am not familiar with that story. That sounds very strange.
But it does suggest being in another's body. And with these other troubling things that have arisen...
[Now she looks like she's worried and seriously considering things.]
no subject
Because it really does to her. As they keep walking, she can't help but keep having that thought, even if it makes no sense. How would they ever be inside someone? It's not like they were swallowed.
(Then again - when has anything in this place ever made sense?) ]
I guess it means we have to watch out there won't be some sort of stomach acid that could try to melt us.
[ She says it relatively calmly, but that's just how Ange deals with the idea of any threat, really. Just face it head on with a pokerface, no matter how gross or ridiculous it may be. ]
no subject
...I doubt we have to worry about digestion. While it's still speculation, I have been suspecting for a while that all of this is intended to be a message for me.
[She falls silent again.]
no subject
[ There's a sense of doubt in Ange's voice as she glances over at Echo. It's not a total denial, since.. well, clearly the other would know better about this than Ange herself would. But at the same time the idea feels a little weird. Sure, sometimes Trench twists and bends and shows them their worst nightmares, or other personal stuff, but on this scale?
It's like the entire world has been twisting and bending around them.
Just to send Echo a message?
Ange frowns. ]
What makes you think that? [ Sure, it might be a bit of a personal question to ask, but Ange can't help but ask it all the same. For all they know, the key to getting out of here could lie in that information. ]
no subject
[She turns her head down to the floor, staring into the dark water.]
This, for example, reminds me of the space where Duldee controlled the personalities it created. And the broken dolls are...
[Echo's expression darkens. After a moment of silence, she begins again.]
That is, the dolls and the strings are also reminiscent of its powers.
no subject
But the meaning of all of this being reminiscent of things Echo is familiar of.. that's the part she's struggling a bit more with. Sure, it could be a message, but.. ]
This place loves reminding us of our past.
[ Just Trench. Just this world as a whole, really. If there's anything Ange knows at this point, it's that fact. ]
It could just be trying to unsettle you. It's what it usually does.
no subject
[Said completely emotionlessly.]
However, the fact that this clearly symbolizes being in a body that belongs to someone else is too specific. It's not a common experience even where I'm from. Unless people simply do not discuss it here.
[Her, all the other shorter-lived Duldums, Oz... That's all she's aware of, yep.]
If these connections only grow stronger, I'm beginning to feel concerned about what else this place may contain.
no subject
[ Sure, it might be.. something that's just a little bit too direct to ask.
And usually Ange wouldn't bother. She can be nosy, sure, but she tends to keep that to herself, knowing how much it can suck when someone digs too deep into your personal business.
On the other hand, there's none of that luxury here and now. They can't let it rest if they could run into something potentially dangerous. ]
What else could be here? If you let me know, we can be prepared for it. [ And sometimes that's what determines the difference between life and death here. ]
no subject
Noise. Or... Duldee may be more likely.
...Has Break-sama informed you on Chains?
[She's explained them to a couple of people around here, but if she doesn't have to waste time on that section with Ange it'd probably help in this situation.
Especially since there's now a door ahead of them in the grotesque corridors. It looks like a normal door at least.]
no subject
So her gaze ends up resting on Echo instead as she nods. ]
Yeah. I know about them.
[ There's very little about their world that she doesn't know at this point, she figures - as long as it's related to Break, anyway. Especially when she even knows the things about the guy he seems to like talking about the least. ]
.. did you have one too?
[ After all, if this entire world is related to Echo somehow, and the other is starting about Chains, it's easy for Ange to make that kind of connection. ]
no subject
No. I am one. Or rather, an extension of one.
[Since she'd already mentioned them, Echo just continues, figuring these would answer her following questions.]
Noise was the Contractor of Duldee, which had the power to instill temporary personalities into others, called Duldum. But Noise could not control the power of the Abyss and began to lose herself. To slow the process, Duldee used its power on her as well to guard her heart. I'm not sure how many there were before, but I was the final one created for this purpose.
[She moves one hand to her chest.]
Therefore I have always inhabited the body that was originally hers.
no subject
Sure, she's heard about Chains, but she didn't know that people could also be Chains. Or maybe the other way around-- Chains can be people? They always seemed more like spirits in her mind, or just generally supernatural beings.
Although these specific circumstances sure.. sound like something. Ange frowns as she tries to process it all. Thankfully she's used to adjusting to ridiculous-sounding information by now, given what she's always dealt with back in her own world. ]
So that was that other girl?
[ At least that's a puzzle piece she can now properly click back in place from a long while ago. ]
Do you think she could be here too? [ If this place is all about Echo.. Then why couldn't there be a representation of her, just like there had been back then? ]
1-a
( There's the sound of footsteps pounding as the young man runs, long legs carrying him swiftly. But he's soon enough finding himself cornered against the intersection of two buildings, and The Thing's coming closer with that horrible unnatural movement.
Peter's eyes are saucer-wide, breathing laboured and tight. It's certainly not the first time he's been pursued by some monster, but this is the first time he's seen one like this. Like some doll — twitching closer, knife extended towards him. (Some part of him dimly registers a face painted on, but it's so faded and worn that he can't realise it's some imitation of himself. Not yet.)
Paimon, he desperately calls, unable to voice anything aloud, just in his head. But the demon doesn't respond; maybe he requires a verbal summoning, or maybe this place has temporarily suppressed him, rendered him unconscious for awhile. Peter's alone.
Then, suddenly, he isn't.
Something flashes into the scene, so fast that Peter almost barely registers it as a person. He does scream, hands coming up to either side of his head like he's trying to shield himself. But... the person's killing the thing with an expert-like capability, and Peter's gaping widely at them. Her. He... knows her, doesn't he? Kind of. )
It's you— ( he gasps, fumbling forwards. He's having a hard time breathing, fingers clenched into the front of his own shirt. The girl's suggestion is momentarily glossed over, not because he means to ignore it, just— )
What— what is that thing?
no subject
[Echo recognizes him after his first comment, mostly because she hadn't paid much attention to who she was helping with the mannequin still in action. She actually looks a bit surprised.
It's pretty obvious to her that this is the person she spoke to over the network and not the demon she met at the wedding. She'd wonder about how that split personality works and if it's anything like her situation was, but it's totally not the time for that.
She glances around as she begins to respond, making sure nothing else is nearby.]
I'm...not certain.
[She knows what it reminds her of, but that's not possible. Noise isn't here and Duldee is dead.]
But it's clearly dangerous. Can you defend yourself at all?
no subject
Concentrate on her words. Something to focus on. He gives himself mental instruction like that, and slowly peels his eyes open after a few moments of labored silence. )
Not... really. ( Admitted with a soft wince; he's... not exactly capable of much. But it's a complicated question — technically he does have a defense, in the form of Paimon. Peter has no idea that the girl has met his demon for herself, though, so he's not sure he should reveal that much just yet. He just witnessed her take something scary down with zero effort... he should probably be kind of cautious, here. )
I don't have.. powers, or training, or anything like that. ( Not the way most people here do. Not the way she clearly does. Peter's staring at her, some mix of impressed and a little frightened. )
You're really good, though. Where'd you learn to fight like that...?
no subject
It was necessary to my purpose, so the ability was given to me when I was born.
[The answer's the same whether or not he knows what Paimon knows. Echo is aware she usually has to explain more around here, but there's also no point or benefit in her lying now.]
It's probably not wise to remain in one place for an extended period of time. Once you are able, we should get moving.
no subject
But whatever's going on here is definitely alarming, and Peter nods quickly, peeling himself off from the wall he was leaning against and moving to step a little closer to her, like he's going to follow. )
Yeah— I'm cool to go. Sorry, ( he adds, aware of his... state. How he's still breathing kind of odd, and looking a little faint. ) ...Stuff like this kind of freaks me out. Uh... fighting, and monsters. But I'm okay now.
( ...Are you, Peter? The second something else pops up, he's definitely going to start screaming. And as he walks, he's just nervously rambling a bit. ) I guess they had stuff like this in your world...? Monsters, I mean. If the ability to fight was uh.. given to you?
no subject
[Echo turns toward the direction she'd been heading in before. Even if Peter doesn't go there naturally, Echo stays close to his side. If there's one thing she's actually good at it's reading situations without being skewed by emotions and she's pretty sure he's going to need help on hand if something else happens.
She starts answering his questions with a single nod.]
Occasionally I would have to hold back Chains. They are widely considered to be monsters. They were not exactly like these creatures, though...
[She pauses for a second, frowning a bit as she's clearly thinking about something. The almost blank puppets... was it some sort of message toward her?]
Combat with people was necessary as well.
no subject
So he stays close to Echo, hands shoved in the front pockets of his coat, shoulders scrunched up a little and looking around with tension. )
Chains.... that just sounds terrifying. ( He can barely imagine what a creature named a Chain would look like. People, though...? )
...It sounds like your world was pretty tough. ( Chewing lightly on the inside of a cheek, Peter then gives a soft exhale. )
There weren't.... monsters, where I'm from. Not like this, at least. They were there, but.... hidden. I didn't even really know about them until I came here.
no subject
I think the average person in my world had an experience similar to yours, although they likely know Chains exist. Few who were still alive would have ever seen one, apart from the dukedoms and those who served them.
[As if on cue, the metallic rattling of a chain can be heard in the distance. Echo freezes and looks in its direction. She spots one of the strange skeletal bird-like creatures, but it's a full block away and doesn't seem to have noticed them if it even cares.]
...Perhaps we should head in the opposite direction.
no subject
He's looking quickly up at the sound, instinctively tensing up and moving closer to Echo. Following the girl's gaze, he spots the thing, too, and balks. She doesn't have to tell him twice; he'll move in said opposite direction, trembling again. )
What.... are they, exactly? Chains.
no subject
Simply put, lifeforms from the Abyss. Some enter into Contracts with those chosen in the human world to guard their home, as they otherwise cannot exist outside of it. Others seek to kill people in hopes they can gain something from it and enter into Illegal Contracts. Chains vary greatly in appearance and powers. I don't believe any two are the same.
[Echo gives the area another scan. Still clear at the moment.]
Perhaps the beach is the safest destination.
[No buildings for things to come out of, one side that should be completely free of attackers and a clear view. It's not like there's a stalker monster heading toward her from there!]
no subject
(And by now, he's certain that Paimon is also listening.) )
The beach sounds good, yeah. ( Peter agrees quickly, continuing to keep pace with Echo. Should be safe there, right...? And easier to see if there's anything unfavourable wandering around the shores. He isn't at all considering that there might be something that came up from the water...! )
Chains sound a lot like.... demons. What I've heard about demons, anyway. ( He offers as they walk, some attempt at conversation while things are relatively calm. ) And the Abyss sounds like... Hell.
( He can smell the ocean now, and see the Boardwalk not far up ahead. Despite Peter's nerves, there's a dose of relief, and he gives a soft sigh. ) ....It's peaceful out here. Haven't been in a while.
I-b
The question is how to get out. Trench phenomena, he thinks, often require working with others to get anywhere. But there's no one else here.
Until he spots a familiar figure dispatching more of those puppets.]
Echo?
no subject
Her head immediately snaps toward the source of the familiar voice just after her latest target crumples.]
Oh, Lucius. Have you had trouble as well?
no subject
Do you know how you got here?
[He brings his sword down hard on the arm of a marionette that had started to raise its own weapon, cutting it off.]
no subject
Not specifically.
[She quickly moves to the side to avoid a thrust from another doll wielding a pair of scissors.]
There was a sudden fog followed by darkness I cannot explain. I heard a strange sound as well. Trench had turned into like this once I was able to see again.
[Echo slices through the marionette that was attack her and the pieces drop to the ground.]
Did you have a different experience?
no subject
The same. [More or less. He turns to strike at a marionette that had come up behind him, knocking to the ground.]
Is anyone else here?
no subject
It's not just us, but it does not seem like many either. I believe I have spotted another person or two, but the situation has made it very difficult to convene or discuss it.
no subject
Taking a cue from her, he drives the point of his sword into the head of the marionette he had knocked down, splitting it open like a nutshell.]
Did they look familiar?
[Maybe wherever they are is targeting certain people. It would explain why there are so few of them around.]
no subject
[The latest onslaught seems to have been quelled. Echo still takes time to scan the area for any signs of imminent danger. It doesn't stop her from continuing her response.]
I suspect there are more here than I've seen, however. If these creatures are so set on violent actions and have not already targeted us, they must be keeping busy elsewhere.
[She's not as confident about this as her usual assessments, but something about this has her feeling...off.]
no subject
He wiggles his sword free of the marionette head.]
Maybe if we find whatever made that sound and set it off again, we'll get sent back.
no subject
Perhaps. If the strange weather conditions are behind it, it likely won't be as easy.
[Still turning and looking in various directions. Even if there's nothing else nearby, maybe an answer of some sort will stand out.]
Could you tell where it came from, or what it was?
no subject
He turns to look around him as well.]
It sounded kind of like a horn? [A large, ugly horn.] It must have come from somewhere high up.
[That would ensure it's widely heard.]
