His thoughts drift off towards someone at home... someone he can no longer see. But he smiles, knowing that she'd be happy to see him thriving even in the darkness of this place. It's nice to see how hope can bloom in the despair that threatens to creep in.
no subject
"Greetings," he says softly, to all appearances a gentle, scholarly young man dressed in green robes, with hair that would hang down to his waist if he were standing up; if he feels any surprise or interest when he catches sight of the pair of cat ears standing out from the other man's head, it's betrayed by only a small widening of his eyes and a caught breath before his face smoothes out and he asks, "Are you new around here? My name is Shen Yuan."
no subject
He inclines his head slightly towards the other. "Have you been here long? I swear I've heard your voice somewhere..." Maybe on the network? But he can't remember ever talking to this man. "In any case, I didn't mean to interrupt your meditation."
no subject
He plays thoughtfully with the ends of a lock of his hair, his gaze curiously returning to Nara'a's ears before roving over his armor and clothing, taking in all of the little details in view. "As for the rest, I've been living here in Trench for nearly a year, and I've been coming here to meditate under the guardian tree since last September or so, while I was helping D built his little fort outside the city limits. A shame we never crossed paths before now." And he grins bashfully, lifting his gaze back to Nara'a's face as he says, "I think I would have remembered someone with such a unique appearance, after all."
no subject
"I've helped out with the outpost some as well, though mostly I'm out taking care of monsters. But -" Wait, is that flirting or genuine, he can't tell. Best... best to act like it's normal. "I suppose I do stand out. Trench doesn't seem to have very many miqo'te at all here, which is... odd to me. A lot of us are travelers at home so we end up... well, all over the place."
Sanctuary -- Closed to Peter Graham
He rubs his hands together meditatively, checking the nailbeds for any traces of left-behind cinnabar and rubbing it away. He's not even sure if they'll be using the room he'd been given permission to borrow and ward off by Allen Walker -- it depends on Peter's comfort levels -- but he wanted it ready just in case. If nothing else, drawing the wards and talismans was good practice for when he'll need them for real...
no subject
"'Miqo'te?'" He tries to repeat the strange word as closely to the way Nara'a said it as he can. "That's what your people are called, right? It's got a lovely sound, though I can't say I've ever heard anything like it before." He gaves Nara'a a sheepish smile. "I suppose you must hear that a lot, please forgive me."

The place itself.... unnerves him, even frightens him. With all of its protections and its particular reputation, combined with his severely possessed status, he.... pretty consistently hosts a fear that at any given moment he might have some kind of adverse reaction, and his imagination conjures up a varietypack of horrible effects.... He's only been here once before, for Sansa's birthday several months back, and it did make him feel ill here and there, the entity within him so sensitive to any wards around the banquet hall. Not in any real danger from them, just... affected. Peter can only imagine how it might be further in, and he can't help feeling like he's something that shouldn't be here. (Monster, is the word that whispers at the shell of his ear. You're a monster, something bad.)
...But he's here, and he's continuing on, and he's not running away. Peter remains aware that he needs help. He's been getting it, really, in so many various forms β but there are parts of it that no one has really yet been able to touch upon. Meeting with someone who can maybe look inside of him in the way Shen Yuan seems capable of doing, maybe perceive his and Paimon's situation on that spiritual level... as terrifying as the thought is, Peter also knows it's an opportunity he can't pass up.
And the man has been nothing but kind and helpful to him already. While Peter's fears about what could happen (could go wrong) feel like a tight ball of writhing snakes in his gut, he is trying to trust the process.
He spots the man quickly enough in the courtyard; Shen Yuan certainly stands out with the way he's dressed and his overall presence, and Peter approaches shyly, but with a little smile (nauseous around the corners, but that's Just Peter.)
"Heyβ! I made it." His awkward smile nudges upwards a bit as he shifts the shoulder bag tucked against one arm. "It's good to finally meet you in person."
no subject
"It is," he agrees, and offers Peter his hand (just his hand for now, his spiritual power kept deftly tucked away under his skin where it belongs). "I'm glad you could make it." And he smiles gently. "Why don't we sit under the tree and talk for a bit? There's no need to rush into anything, I think."
He'd wondered if he'd be able to tell, if meeting Peter in person would betray some strangeness that the omni had concealed, but so far he seems to be a perfectly normal albeit painfully anxious young man. So clearly the first step is so to do something about those nerves, if he can.
no subject
He doesn't even hesitate as long as he normally might, to take the offered hand. Peter gets gunshy about physical touch β for, a number of reasons β but he's reaching to shake the other man's hand, softly.
"Sure, that sounds great, yeah." There's a nod, and an inward exhale of relief to take things slow. As curious as Peter is to see what Shen Yuan might discover, he's also... not exactly leaping to head into one of the Sanctuary rooms.
So he'll move to sit under the tree, long legs folded crossed. Peter's a tall presence but he carries himself as though he wants to be smaller, all six feet of his frame withdrawn.
"Thank you, again. For agreeing to do this. I... brought a notebook so I could take notes, too. Share stuff with Luna." He gives a lopsided little smile, reaching for his bag where he has a few supplies tucked in.

"That's all right. As long as people are trying to understand. But that's right. There are two subspecies of it in my world, and my clans are called Keepers of the Moon as opposed to the others, which are Seekers of the Sun. And yes, we're nocturnal and diurnal, respectively. Much of the time, at least." He gestures to the sky - not even close to nighttime.
He offers the other a gentle smile. "But I've seen many cities with many different sorts of people. I'm an adventurer by trade, so I'm used to being in the minority."
no subject
It pleases him still more to see Peter taking an active hand. "Good idea," he says agreeably, kneeling next to Peter with the skirts of his robes pooling elegantly around his knees. "Miss Lovegood is the one of the best scholars I know of; I look forward to hearing her insights."
He pauses for a moment there, to consider their options, before suggesting, "Why don't I begin by telling you a little about myself and how my powers work? Then, if you feel comfortable, you can tell me more about yourself and your situation, and we can come up with a plan for how to proceed together."
no subject
Shen Yuan is giving Nara'a his full attention now, hanging on his every word with an expression of quiet wonder on his face. This was always the part he liked best about reading in his first life: being introduced to fantastical worlds and cultures unlike anything he'd known. The shine emphatically had not worn off even after he was transported into a fantasy world himself.
"I can see you wear armor with confidence," he notes, with a second, admiring glance at the suit of metal protecting Nara'a's person. "And if you were helping protect the outpost while it was under construction, then you must be a formidable warrior. How have you found Trench, compared to other cities you've visited?"
Endwalker spoilers
As for the 'formidable warrior' remark, he shrugs, armor clanking slightly as he does. "I've fought man a large monster, but the more difficult ones are the ones that come from within. The fact that this place can change people... I've seen that happen before, and it's never pretty. They tend to be the more destructive kinds of creatures. Anything we can do to reduce suffering and despair here is worth doing."
Re: Endwalker spoilers
Ugh, that's much, much too morbid for a first meeting. Shen Yuan forces a smile onto his face and does his best to dismiss everything he just said with a brisk, "But that's only speculation. Living day to day, I find there's something satisfying about doing work that makes an immediate change for the better in other people's lives, don't you agree?"
no subject
... Anyway. "I do like doing that sort of thing myself. I tend to patrol... I drag beasts here when I can, but when I can't I at least try to give them a swift end. It's depressing work, but necessary. And some of my magicks can do it without shedding blood."
no subject
But he tries not to think too much about that just now, or about those lingering fears regarding what could go wrong. In the here and now, it's listening time, and a good chance to gather up some courage before he heads deeper in. So the young man readies his pen attentively. It's rare that Peter Graham takes notes, but he'll do this diligently....
"Ohβ sure, that'd be great. Whatever you're cool sharing, I'm here for it." Peter gives a little nod, not wanting to press for any personal details, an open book for the other man to reveal what he likes, how he likes.

"I am a type of magic-user called a cultivator, and our speciality is the collection and manipulation of a type of spiritual energy called qi, which is produced by all living things." His smile widens. "As the basics of our techniques are shared by martial arts traditions all over Asia and across many worlds, you may already be somewhat familiar with them from anime or martial arts movies." Or Star Wars, for that matter! But that's not a can of worms they need to open right now. Shen Yuan continues,
"Cultivators take the principles of qi refinement a step further by learning how to absorb spiritual energy from other sources, such as those found in nature." He taps the trunk of the guardian tree gratefully. "This tree for instance, thanks to the blessing of the goddess who planted it, is an excellent source of spiritual energy that promotes calm and healing even in those who have no spiritual awareness to speak of. I come here to meditate under its branches every weekend, and by absorbing a small amount of its spiritual power I am able to cleanse myself of corruption and promote my own magical development, without doing any harm to the tree. Although," and here he grimaces; it may be uncomfortable to hear this part, but Peter deserves to know.
"There do exist techniques that can drain all of the spiritual energy from a living being, including a person. But that is simply another form of murder, and those techniques are proscribed in every just society that I know of." He closes his fan, sharply tapping the piece of wood that guards its outer edge against his opposite palm. "I would never engage in such things, not even to save my own life. I mention this only so you needn't feel concerned for your safety around me, should you hear of such things from another person."
no subject
"But trying to help the beasts is noble," he says eagerly, scooting a little closer to Nara'a as if he can convince him to tell him more through sheer proximity. "Have any of them been turned back into people so far? I know there were Sleepers who wished to try, but I haven't had time to look into their methods or see their results for myself."
no subject
Scooting closer? Cute. He smiles a bit and nods. "I know there's been a few successes, but... it depends on the amount of corruption and how long someone's been a Beast. It seems to degrade the soul in some way. Allen would be the person to ask about that - he's very good at cleansing corruption." He leans in a little, shoulder bumping shoulder, and then realizes -
"Ah. Let me change." He doesn't have his casual clothes here, but he takes out a small crystal. A moment of concentration and - suddenly is in an entirely different set of clothing. "There. No hard metal." He pats his shoulder, an invitation for the other to lean in again.
no subject
He interrupts himself with a startled, yet delighted laugh as Nara'a changes his clothes in an instant. "Well!" he exclaims. "Isn't that handy?" One of his hands begins to rise from his lap before quickly checking its ascent and turning back, but his eyes still track between the crystal, Nara'a's new outfit, and his face with wonder and curiosity. "Does it do anything else? We had similar magic in the last world I lived, dimensional pockets hidden up our sleeves, rings and other jewelry that could carry concealed weapons or reagents -- but I've seen one that also worked like a quick-change button." He laughs again, his shoulder now pressed companionably against Nara'a's.

Which is why he quite literally bumps into someone as he's walking with his head down. He's only fourteen and kind of small for his age regardless so thankfully it's unlikely he knocked poor Shen Yuan over, but he will blink and immediately offer, "Ah, I'm sorry..."
no subject
He grins at Shen Yuan when he laughs. The crystal gets brought up and held in his hand - close to his body, but he trusts the other to not try to grab for it. "It does. It helps me channel my aether more effectively into spells. It also stores my clothing. But in this crystal are the memories of its previous wielders - not anything personal, mind you, but combat abilities. It... hm. Speeds up muscle memory learning, in a way."
The miqo'te holds it out for a few more moments before tucking it away into a pocket. "I have a few of those sorts of crystals with me - far fewer than I have available to me at home, but enough that I can change for what the combat situation requires. Just don't ask me to heal - I'm terrible with that." He laughs a little bit despite himself - he's comfortable with his own limits. He can't do everything.

His face is lit up with wonder and curiosity. This is clearly not a man who shies away from loredrops.

He leans a little closer, trying to put his finger on what about the kid seems so...odd. He doesn't have a concussion, does he? "Are you lost?" he asks kindly.
no subject
A little funny to say that surrounded by all the very much harm done ages ago.
"Oh, no I-" A quick glance around. "I wanted to help with cleaning up." Since this is his mess and all. "Are you here for that too?"

He even remembers the causes of all of them! Though the Sixth was a particular area of study given its connection with mages and his time in the Thaumaturge's Guild.

(Every once in awhile, Peter's tongue brushes the roof of his mouth, slowly, without his awareness that it's happening.)
But when he needs to speak again, his tongue becomes his own, and he's working it into soft words. His pupils settle, returning his eyes to their natural warm browns.
"Were you born able to do it? Collecting and manipulating qi...? Or was it something you had to learn how to do? Can anyone in your world do it?"
The questions come naturally, little bursts of curiosity voiced. It's all extremely interesting, and energy, the different forms of it, is something he's certainly become more and more curious by over time, considering the entity that occupies him and its own connection to such concepts.
no subject
"It was something I learned how to do as an adult." He fans himself slowly, considering his next words. "In the world where I was born, cultivation -- all forms of magic, actually -- only existed in works of fiction. I was a big fan of fantasy books of all kinds -- like Miss Lovegood's story, which I enjoyed very much -- but my favorites were all cultivation novels." He smiles sadly. "When I was around your age, a book I'd been following passionately ended suddenly and, I thought, very badly. Around the same time I fell terribly ill, and eventually fell into a deep sleep -- I may even have died, it's impossible to be sure. But when I woke up, it was in a world full of people and places that shared names and precise descriptions with those in the book, and a voice in my head told me it was my responsibility to learn cultivation and 'fix' the plot. I lived in that world for about...four years?" Yes, that sounds about right. "And then woke up in the sea outside Trench. I no longer hear that voice, for which I will always be grateful to the powers that rule this world, and I continue to practice cultivation for both survival and my peace of mind."
"As for whether anyone can learn how to do it, the answer is yes, but with some caveats. Different people have different levels of aptitude for cultivation, just as different people have different levels of natural ability for mathematics or sports. While nearly anyone can master the basics through hard work alone, some degree of natural talent and a bit of good luck is necessary to reach the highest levels of skill. People who began their training as children also tend to see more success than those who started later; it's generally accepted that by the time a student turns twenty-five or so, if they haven't already formed a golden core than they probably never will. But there are exceptions to every rule, of course."
no subject
"Oh? That's certainly different," he says, looking and sounding delighted by the prospect. "Is it also considered a form of magick when matters changes from type into another, like when a fire burns wood? Or does there need to be a conscious will involved? How do the types of matter and energy you've encountered here in Trench compare to your home?" And then he laughs, covering his mouth with the delicate fingers of one hand.
"Forgive me, I don't mean to sound like I'm trying to interrogate you. It's just magic has always interested me, even though -- well, probably because I grew up in a world that didn't have any at all."

The apology gets a smile. "So you lived in another world that wasn't your own before coming here. It's... interesting, because I also went to another world. It was similar enough to my world, though there were some major differences. Including how they looked at certain elements... but that's a whole diagram's worth of story." He laughs a little bit, putting his fist in front of his mouth to muffle the sound. "And I've always been a bit of a nerd about magicks - the usual joke is that I can't help it, having the Scholar as my patron."
no subject
"Who is the Scholar?" he asks next. "Are the patrons in your world like gods, perhaps? I suppose you've already picked apart all the differences between your world's set, and this one's." And he smiles invitingly. Go on Nara'a, tell him all about it!
no subject
Ah. Right. "They're gods, yes. Thaliak is the Scholar's name - all of the deities have titles, like how Menphina is the Lover. They all have associated elements as well as specific things they're prayed to for. So for example, the scholarly nation of Sharlayan has a giant statue of the Scholar pouring water right in front of the port. As for differences between them and this world's... I'm not totally convinced the Patrons here are gods. They don't really seem to be much in the way of helping people..."
